Who are the people of Macaronesia? A region you've probably never heard of, consisting of the island chains of Cape Verde, the Canary Islands, Azores and Madeira, divided between several countries, yet nonetheless, sharing a somewhat common history, heritage and identity.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the people and history of these unique island chains, and which island chain you find to be of the most significance or interest. Thanks for watching!

It was the Canarian sailors during the 1500's who took the Canarian accent to the Caribbean. So, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic accents are all derived from Canarian Spanish. There is also a small region in Uruguay thst was colonised by Canarian migrants who retained the accent. The locals call them "Canarios".

That’s were most and almost all the merchants ships took Sephardic Jewish children and Muslim Moors moresco and Morano from after they were expelled from Iberia Spain and Portugal today. They were the people they called Africans along with Natives. Slavery was a Religious war and Cuba has one the largest population of Jews, and they’re mostly Sephardic Jews. No Africans were taken to Cuba.. they’re Christianised Muslim Moors, force to convert to Catholicism..

@@bye230 Creole is a linguistic term for a type of language, not a single language. Many creoles are often just called "creole" (or "pidgin" or "jargin"), in certain contexts (such as Haitian Creole being called "Kreyòl"), but that doesn't mean they're in any way the same language, even when they're actually based partially off the same language. E.g. "Cameroonian Creole" and "Tok Pisin" are both English-based creoles, but definitely not the same language, as one developed in West Africa and the other around New Guinea. Sango is an example creole that isn't even really based on any Indo-European language (though I'm sure there was French influence). (Another is the creole-Mandarin on Singapore, I think) When communities without a common language come into contact, the people have to develop some form of ad hoc communication. After enough use, the basic vocabulary and grammar start to standardize.* This kind of language is called a "pidgin". If a pidgin becomes used in enough areas of life that children begin to learn it as their first language, then the native language of their children is called a "creole" because children generally must adapt their native language to be useful in every situation. (It's mostly linguists who make this distinction consistently; for example "Hawaiian Pidgin" is actually a creole to linguists.) In colonial contexts, this usually happens as conquered or enslaved people, or people who people have an economic incentive to speak with the colonial power for trade try to learn the colonial powers language quickly without any explicit teaching. The immediate result of such a method is to use a small number of words and phrases from the colonial language (with guessed and expanded meanings) strung together with a simplified grammar mostly based on the the learner's native language. This, usually colonial, language which is known as the "lexifier" language because it supplies most of the lexicon (i.e. vocabulary) of the pidgin. When we call a pidgin or creole "English-based" or "Portuguese-based" or "Russian-based", etc. we are naming the lexifier language (of the pidgin). If a learner continues collecting input in a diligent attempt to learn the colonial language, they're language will eventually become closer and closer to the to that language. There are however things that stop this: 1: Sporadic use doesn't give enough input and practice (e.g. if you only use it every few weeks or months when a ship shows up) 2: Once communication becomes possible, the motivation to keep approaching the lexifier language dissappears, especially if speakers of the lexifier language start learning the pidgin themselves (as was very common, if not predominant, I think). These 2 factors can be enough to keep a pidgin alive, as with Russenorsk, a Russian-based pidgin spoken by Norwegian fisherman and the Russians who trades with them. However, a third factor is generally required to create creoles. 3: When speakers of more than two languages are involved (such as Portuguese and multiple African languages from diffent sources of slaves), speakers of various non-lexifier languages must use the pidgin to communicate with eachother, and this may become more common and important than speaking with speakers of the lexifier language. This is called "tertiary hybridization" and results both in speakers using the language in more life-situations and in them developing the language themselves to fit such situations, with minimal input from speakers of lexifier language. This starts the pidgin having a life of it's own and greatly increases the chance of creolization: You can see how a child of two slaves who spoke different African languages and lived in a Porruguese-controlled colony would almost certainly grow up speaking pidgin, which would thus then be called a creole. *Note: Grammar in this sense is not rules some grammarians make up and enforce. Grammar is the rules people follow in practice to get there meanings across. When I say that it "standardizes" in pidgins, I mean that people figure out a way to communicate and stick to it and other people copy other pidgin-speakers to make sure they're understood (and maybe for other reasons). Sometimes there is explicit teaching involved, but it's not completelt necessary.

The flemish were a minor part of the settlement and concentrated on the islands of Faial, Pico and Sao Jorge. There is a wikipedia article that claims this but it is not sourced.

There are maybe 500 000 capeverdeans in the New England region, the majority emigrated there between 1850 and 1900 (along with azoreans) because the american whale fishing boats used to go from boston to azores and then to capeverde and then back to boston. Iceland was far from pure Germanic even 1000 years ago. It is argued that most of ethnic Icelanders are descended from 1 Native American woman. Also, as Brendan Jacobi said, Irish slaves were taken to Iceland as well. Not to mention that the Irish monks lived on the island prior to that, and first Norse settlers probably encountered them. Also, modern Iceland has a population of 350 000 people. Of which some 10 000 people are Polish, so they make up even 4% of the total population of the island. Not to mention other ethnicities such like Lithuanians or Germans.

Very interesting, I had not heard of the term "Macaronesia" before? A few suggestions for topics: 1. Newly renamed countries of Czechia, eSwatini, and North Macedonia (former Czech Republic, Swaziland, and Macedonia (FYROM); also, it might be worth mentioning the upcoming independence referendums in 2019. 2. Groups of people who are direct descendants of differently named ancient peoples: -Kurds (Median Empire) -Iranians(Persians) -Mani Peninsula, Greece (Spartans) -Jews (Hebrews/Israelites) -Ossetians (Scythians) -Nahuatl (Aztecs) -Quiche (Maya) -Quechua (Inca) -Assyrian relation to modern Syria -Turks (Ottoman Empire) -English (Anglo-Saxons) etc. 3. What if the Kalmar Union united into one Scandinavian country again? 4. St. Pierre and Miquelon 5. People's of the mid and eastern Arctic Islands (starting with Svalbard, Norway and going east towards Wrangel Island, Russia). Most of us know about Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Iceland. What about the other half of it? 6. Nan Model Explained 7. Torajastan 8. Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Austo-Hungarian Empire 9. People's of the Sub-Antarctic Islands 10. Genetics of Nova Scotia (I gave more suggestions in the comments on the video about the Armenians) As usual, I hope that helps!

They have some things written about them but not too much. The Dragon Blood tree was the main holy tree and it simbolises the life, it is nown also as the tree of life. They were goat herders and they used the milk for adivination, pouring it into a carved rock in the top a mountain.

There's now a Church in Canary Islands where people worship an original berber solar guanche goddess named Chaxiraxi, it became a minor religion there with at least 500 followers. There was the god of the skies named Achaman, there's quite a pantheon actually I don't know every deities, just look it up, and they had pyramids and mommified their dead in caves in ritualistic manners.

You failed to mention the huge Flemish impact in Azores. Some of the most characteristic family names there are actually from Flanders - Bettencourt, Goulart, Brum - while others were translated or phonetically adapted to Portuguese, thus hiding their Flemish roots (e.g. Van der Roos -> da Rosa, Van der Haegen -> da Silveira)

The Guanches were mostly from the island of Tenerife, each island had a specific name for their tribe or local aboriginals. Generally, though, they are considered as a whole as "Guanches". The video comments on how the Canaries were out of the colonization plans of Romans and other ancient empires, but, many historians agree that the most plausible explanation on how these peoples came into the archipelago is that they were brought by a superior power, most likely Romans trying to find new outposts for their "purpura" or purple robes only fit for emperors. This is plausible, since ancient Canarians did not know navigation, and their isolation was not only to the continent but also between islands. Thanks for talking about our culture in other non-Spanish contexts!
