I've found for a good while the Turkic empires, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Northern Caucasus with all the many different cultures there, Circassians especially I've found intriguing with a kingdom there called Sindica, Sint - Moetian, Huttians, Guttians, early people in central Asia with Anau, Keltiminar, Karasuk, Cooates, Yamnaya, Andronov...such good stuff, Urartu, Artaxiad, Bagratid, Arsacid

@@MoAnInc yes the same here...I have a few of his courses and listen to the them multiple times, often wondering how Dr. Harl is doing. Would love to go to especially Greece and Turkey (and sooo many other places) to see the sights and locations that he's talking about. I have not done the course on Empires of the Steppes but will get to it someday. Anyway a big thanks to you as very valuable information is provided here in this interview (especially how Kenneth Harl is doing and his book recommendations)

Wonderful! So good to get the lore from Eastern sources! Really adds to the broken circle of our ancient knowledge. Wishlist Ed this book. Saved those lectures for this weekend. Thank you both!

I haven’t picked this up yet because my interest is mainly the ancient near east, but Dr. Harl on steppe civilization (and pretty much anything else) is a favorite. I’ve learned so much from him. For a long time his Great Courses Great Ancient Civilizaions of Asia Minor was the best popular source of the ancient near east I could find.

The Muqaddimah is a must read for you! Here, Ibn Khaldun’s analysis was grounded in his observations of the Bedouin tribes of the North African desert - a nomadic people whose way of life had remained largely unchanged over the centuries, and who he regarded as similar to the early founders of the Arabic Empire.

very good video, lots of interesting details and comparisons of Huns and Scythians and later Mongols. the Vikings also made some raids as far east as Uzbekistan, and fought the Khazars, too. the steppes are a mysterious, deadly place
