The 101st Airborne is an elite division of light infantry in the United States Army that specializes in air assault operations.
With three brigade combat teams, the 101st Airborne is capable of simultaneously deploying multiple units to austere environments behind enemy lines. The division has its own artillery, aviation, and sustainment brigades, which aid in the unit’s ability to deploy autonomously. The 101st’s unique mobility and self-sufficiency make it one of America’s most trusted combat-ready forces.
The 101st Airborne division’s air assault capabilities make it unlike the Army’s other airborne divisions. The 101st is colocated alongside the Army’s notoriously rigorous Sabalauski Air Assault School at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where soldiers become experts in helicopter operations. Their training includes sling-load procedures, pathfinder operations, and fast-rope techniques. Roughly half of the soldiers who attend Air Assault School fail to complete the difficult training. Those who graduate the grueling course are permitted to wear the Air Assault Badge.
Soldiers of the 101st Airborne wear black berets bearing the insignia of the subordinate unit they belong to. Members of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, and 3rd Brigade Combat Team each have distinctive unit insignias. The 101st Combat Aviation Brigade also has its own unique insignia. However, every soldier in the 101st wears a shoulder patch bearing the division’s insignia of a bald eagle on a black shield.

@@ghosttimm420 Ummm... No. There is absolutely zero prerequisite special training requirements for the 101st. It's a light infantry unit (our nations largest)... Nothing more. No physical fitness limits, no intelligence quota... Definitely no airborne requirement... Just regular light infantry.
@Matt-416
@Matt-416 6 ай бұрын
@@j.velgrynd Ummm... You need to specify the requirement for Air Assault. In the late 1990's yes, it was required. However, due to the increased deployment schedule during GWAT, it was dropped altogether.. I know of multiple veterans that served in the 101st for entire enlistments that never went to air assault school. To this day, according to Major Jonathan Baer, Executive officer of 1/187th, "air assault qualification is no longer a requirement as the nature of battle has changed". Perhaps YOU should do your reading. What... Exactly what can the 101st do that ANY other light infantry division can't? Any capabilities they specialize in that isn't performed by other infantry divisions? Exactly what makes the LARGEST infantry division stand out as elite and "not regular light infantry"? Please list details and/or examples.

The grandest form of early-age institutional brainwashing is that of the US Military. Kids play army, buy army men, wear uniforms. In grade school we sang the hymnals of every service branch. Since 1948, America has traveled to anywhere a democracy broke out. While pumping trillions into the pockets of the war criminals, Wr make sure that freedom doesn’t happen From Vietnam on, baby. I deployed with 2/327th infantry regiment to do martial law in Kosovo in year 2000. We did lots of stuff there you won't generally hear about in the news or online. We were arresting people every night for violating curfew, going house to house kicking down doors to search for weapons, responding to terrorist attacks on civilians, doing air assault missions into neighborhoods to set up checkpoints and doing escorts for war criminals. I put my deployment videos on my KZbin channel. One of them shows a house search.

Hahaha!! This guy said it perfectly... "First conventional unit in Afghanistan" Strange how the 82nd and Rangers went in before them.... And oddly enough, JUMPED. The fought for, secured, and cleared the airfield that the 10th and 101st landed on. Those eagles are no where near elite. No jump boots, no wings, no special beret. Just regular leg infantry. Not airborne in 60 years. In fact, only airborne for less than ten years since it's original inception. Deactivated multiple times, to the point that the infamous 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment became a mechanized infantry unit... for three times longer than they were even light infantry, let alone ACTUALLY paratroopers. Largest Infantry Division in the army, so it's not exactly elite. No deployment readiness cycle. No standby status. In reality, the 3rd ID deployed two days faster (with armor) than the 101st "airborne" was with helicopters during a JRTC exercise in 2005... And the 3rd ID had further to go with less aircraft, and a smaller window for movement. The 101st capabilities are a ghost of what made them so renowned. Vietnam, they were 98% NON airborne draftees. Not some small highly trained special task force. They were drafted infantry. Nothing more. Air Assault... Not an infantry school. It's a tough supply school. Never heard of a grunt needing to know how to tape seatbelt buckles, nor the carrying capacity of a mh46 in combat. Oh... Wait... The 101st doesn't use the mh46... Only airborne units do. So sad Get that lying tab off of that eagle that's screaming for help. Dopes on ropes (that don't even use ropes anymore).
@rwdchannel2901

Airborne doesn't mean "Parachute" only. In WW2 at Bastogne the 327th infantry regiment held off the Germans which made the 101st a legend. The 327th infantry regiment was a glider regiment. During the Vietnam war is when the 101st became an air assault regiment. It's a light infantry regiment with lots of capabilities that make it very good in combat. What made the 101st special in WW2 was their selection training which included a 60 mile road march in 3 days. No infantry unit is requiring that today unless its Rangers. George H.W. Bush jumped out of plane on his 90th birthday. Jumping out of a plane doesn't make anyone elite.
@Matt-416
@Matt-416 8 ай бұрын
@@rwdchannel2901 Yes, I know the difference between a historic Airborne Infantry Regiment and a Parachute Infantry Regiment. However, the term is a blanket term referencing certain capabilities, so let's not get lost in the weeds. I agree, jumping out of an airplane doesn't make one elite. Having airborne wings doesn't make one elite either. That's why there's a stark difference between an airborne qualified individual and being a maroon beret wearing paratrooper. Basic airborne school is not difficult. But it trains and qualifies for a specific activity that is inherently dangerous. Air Assault school is harder, with the training focusing on curriculum over action. I know a lot of soldiers, both airborne and leg, that have inserted into combat by helicopter, and none of them were Air Assault qualified. Yet no one has ever experienced a MasTac in the middle of the night, where 300 paratroopers are inserted in under 2 minutes, and assembled, and moving towards an objective in under 30 minutes. However, I must insist that being in an Airborne Infantry unit, with the degree and intensity of training (from overland marches, night land nav, CLS qualifications, foreign weapon cross training & qual, vehicle insertion, helicopter insertion, combat swimming, and of course, parachute insertion), with much better small unit training, gear, and most importantly, capabilities. The 101st WAS elite. They earned their reputation and I respect that. But today's 101st is just regular light infantry. They are no more capable nor trained than any other regular army infantry unit, and haven't been for over 50 years.
@rwdchannel2901
@rwdchannel2901 8 ай бұрын
@@Matt-416 Its probably because due to modern technology they don't need to be as physically toughs as soldiers were in the past. Look at the drones and stuff being used in the Ukraine-Russia war. It doesn't matter how far you can march when there are drones up in the air going to get you. The only ones doing similar training to WW2 101st airborne these days are Rangers, Special Forces and Delta Force.
@Matt-416

@@rwdchannel2901 I couldn't agree more. My point was more to the point of tactical capabilities, but yes! Granted, post korea frontline soldiers carry substantially more weight than they did in WW2, but you are definitely correct. The physical requirements were brutally demanding. That's across all military branches. Definitely the greatest generation. From Rosie the riveter to iron Mike, I have nothing but respect for them, and their sacrifices for honor and patriotism.
