Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy started in the silent movies in the 1920's and transitioned to "talkies" through the 1930's and 1940's.

Oliver started in pictures in 1914. They were first together in 1921. But it wasn't until 1927 that they became a team because of the obvious chemistry they had together.

Keep going with these guys, they're hilarious. You might want to start with a compilation video, sort of like a greatest hits to get you familiar with their comedy. They're right up there with the Stooges slapstick. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. You made me chuckle, it's not Lou rail but like in the term "Don't rest on your laurel's" More if these two and more Stooge's please. Moe, Larry and Curly, you haven't even scratched the surface of these three yet along with these two guys. 3 Stooges and Laurel and Hardy. The GOAT'S of Slapstick comedy. Peace

Mel Brooks shouted these guys out in Blazing Saddles when the mayor extended a laurel and hearty (Hardy) handshake. If you like the old stuff you may want to check out The Honeymooners starring Jackie Gleason, Audrey Meadows and Art Carney. The Flintstones cartoon was modeled after this show. If you've ever heard the phrase "One of these days Alice, pow, right in the kisser!", it is from this show. The golf scene with Ralph and Norton is one of the most memorable. Norton was the original Kramer (Seinfeld). Alice was a great character too. Despite the timeline, she didn't take any crap.

Laurel (pronounced Lawrel) and Hardy started during the SILENT film era. They were VERY popular in the 1920's and 1930's, and like The Stooges did mostly "Shorts" skits. As a kid in the 1960's we used to go to the library and get film reels to play at home.

Watching these older comedies and comics like Laurel and Hardy, is like watching a masterclass. It just strips it down to its most basic and purest form and it is still funny. Laurel and Hardy’s partnership and friendship lasted for over 30 years, starting in the silent era of the 1920s and the all the way up to the 50s.

The Music Box is a Laurel and Hardy short film comedy released in 1932. It was directed by James Parrott, produced by Hal Roach and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film, which depicts the pair attempting to move a piano up a long flight of steps, won the first Academy Award for Best Live Action Short (Comedy) in 1932. In 1997, it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

Lou-rel, ha ha. It amazes me today that these classic entertainers of the past are seemingly not known. Unless you grew up with parents who would show you this type of thing, that is. When I was a kid (70's-80's) before every TV channel was a network affiliate, these shorts would be showcased in syndication. Also, before VCR's were in every household, I would see some of these at my local library via movie projector reels. Damn I'm old. I've been a fan of Laurel & Hardy's work ever since. The 3 Stooges and The Little Rascals were also shown on TV in that same time period.

Unlike some other comedy duos, they were friends on and off the set. Stan Laurel refused roles after Hardy's death and acted only as a consultant. 65% of Oliver Hardy 's 250 silent shorts prior to 1927 have been lost forever but the duo known around the world by different names will live on.

I remember this scene. It was part of a longer film where Laurel (that's the skinny guy) and Hardy (the fat guy) were serving in WWI and were best friends. They get separated and Laurel was told to guard a trench. While he's alone and guarding it...the War ends. But nobody went back to tell him. So he stays in the trench...for years, thinking the war is still on. Finally some people come by and see this huge pile of empty ration cans outside the trench and finally tell him the war is over and he can go home. His buddy Hardy thinks he was killed...and meets him in this scene...and assumes at first he lost his leg in the war.

This vid is only the second scene of the movie, which begins with everyone but Laurel attacking the Germans in France during WWI, which then fades to Laurel still guarding a trench in the mid 1930s, eating cans of beans from a huge store meant for a whole regiment. He's returned to the states when found, and the next scene is this one, with his buddy Hardy coming to meet him, doing his clumsy best to care for a man he thinks is crippled. The movie continues with Laurel confused by modern houses (automatic garage doors, electric doorbells, more), and him never getting that home-cooked steak he was promised. There was actually a scandal at the time this was made about WWI veterans not getting the support promised and if unable to work due to wounds, getting nothing at all. Especially if they were 'less than white' sadly...

You don't have to hide it behind any opacity filter, this is well out of copyright expiration. Copyright for film lasts 70 years from the day the final key figure dies. For film those key figures include the principle director, the screen writer, the script writer and the composer of any music written specifically for the film in question. Since all Laurel and Hardy films are 80-100 years old, there's a good chance they are all copyright free.
