Avani Betta is a place of historic significance. Valmiki who wrote Ramayana resided here on the hill top. During the exile, Sita Devi also took shelter at this place. Here is where she gave birth to her two sons, Lava and Kusha. This is one of the very few places in India where there is a temple for Sita Devi.
On the way up, there is a small water body called Laxman Theertha. Married women who are longing to have children will take bath in this water body and climb up the hill and reside in the temple premises overnight. During their sleep, if they get a dream of them conceiving, the belief is that they will conceive in reality the same year. If they don't get a dream that night, they will wait for one whole year and repeat this practice the following year hoping to conceive. On our way up, we saw a lady accompanied by her mother/mother-in-law performing this practice.
A slight walk from the temple, there is a spot where the two sons of Sita - Lava and Kusha, tied Ram's horse. The horse, being so powerful, started chewing on the rocks as it was very hungry.
At the foothills, there is another temple called Ramalingeswara temple. This temple is full of ancient carvings and rare Tamil scriptures carved on the temple walls and floors.
Those who stay in Bangalore should definitely plan a visit to this place. This is a famous location for trekkers as well.
