I'm not sure what accountability is in the west. I see no true democracy anymore. No shame in anyone's actions, people resign only when they have had enough and not when ethical rules are breached. Companies that know no boundaries in the pursuit of profit. So please can someone let me know where we have accountability?

This conversation is quite weak. The companies should be responsible for the Promotion of content by their algorithms, not for Content created by humans. If the owners of the platform, and their algorithm promotes hate speech or misinformation, they should be liable for that promotion.

Censorship benefits the powerful and makes the regular person weaker. 'Content moderation' = censorship, these are just orwellian word games. Why does some large monopolistic tech company have a right to delete my comments? Most of my comments are deleted on KZbin. What kind of person argues for even more of this?

The heart of the problem is the idea that any one person can dictate what is "problematic" and what is not. Especially when many things deemed as being problematic are in fact just embarrassing to someone in power, or indicative of some corruption. While we live in a world where the wanton slaughter of at least 40,000 people is called "self defence" while desperate acts of fear and anger against such an onslaught are called terrorism, there can be no meaningful use of the word "truth". While we live in a world where the wealthiest pay next to no tax and must be given even more money to motivate them, while we take more and more scraps from the poorest to pay for it, there can be no meaningful use of the word truth. Nobody from among the wealthy and powerful is going to come to our rescue. Awaiting another new Government, chosen from among the ranks of true believers, is a fool's game. How many more times do we have to get fooled?

It’s not accountability they want. They want total control.

Who bears responsibility for what happens on social media? In a democracy, individual responsibility on social media is guided by personal conscience, which shapes how people engage with public spaces, both online and in real life. People are expected to use their freedoms responsibly, and the extent of that responsibility often correlates with the power and influence they wield. Those with larger platforms or more authority have a greater obligation to respect public freedoms and contribute to informed, respectful discourse. However, individual conscience is not the sole determinant. Social norms serve as the ultimate measure of acceptable behavior, particularly when addressing issues like misinformation, hate speech, or malicious intent. These norms evolve based on collective values and expectations, shaping how online behavior is judged and regulated. Social media, as a reflection of society’s values, becomes a battleground where differing views on freedom, truth, and responsibility collide. In the context of political censorship, legitimacy stems from public consensus. Any restriction on speech must be supported by the general agreement of the society it impacts. Without this collective backing, censorship loses its moral authority. This makes it essential for critiques of public figures or policies to be grounded in well-reasoned, fact-based arguments that resonate with the wider population. Public discourse thrives when diverse opinions are weighed against shared values, allowing society to determine the boundaries of acceptable expression. Ultimately, the responsibility for social media content lies at the intersection of individual accountability, social norms, and public consensus. Each shapes the other, with individuals, institutions, and society at large contributing to a dynamic system of shared responsibility. For democracy to flourish in the digital age, it requires a delicate balance between personal freedom, collective norms, and the informed judgment of the people.

There is nothing wrong with surveillance being present in every country as long as it does not violate human rights. but social media applications that do the same thing can be problematic because they are not like state entities that have many secrets that must be protected from dangerous leaks. social media applications are only limited to individual personal data secrets where the spread of danger is different from state security secrets. so the treatment of individual application platforms versus government applications of a country is certainly completely different. problems arise when the state intervenes in managing security on social media platforms for reasons of blah blah blah but on the other hand the owners of social media platforms feel anxious because of the pressure from their subscribers who feel limited in all the features they need. so in short, stop mixing up state accountability with the general public, vice versa. it is useless to involve AI because it is only a tool to make things easier, and it is also useless to discuss about digital rights because the internet is automatically a digital matter that it creates, like your email account as the main identity to roam the virtual world. whether that identity is real or fake depends on the purpose of your intention to start it.

X was suspended in Brazil for not complying with what Brazilian law required, after 39 days, Elon Musk finally understood that it is necessary to respect the laws and Twitter is back.

An authoritarian government would take the responsibility to control the social media which an democratic government would take the opportunity to make money.

IF a hacker was living in my home and i would know about it, i would have a talk about his illegal activities on my ground. It should be the same online, you can't have platforms evading responsibilities for what they create. Law is Law
