The sound design in the Prime games is just so... awesome. I'd argue they are genuinely perfect. Absolutely love it.

Another one of those things that gets taken for granted but when you delve into it becomes an Ice berg. That's just the Audio side. I can't begin to imagine what the visuals side of Prime's history is like. Thanks for doing this dude!

It'd be cool if the origin of the sound when you scan something with the scanner visor got found. It's probably my most favorite sound effect I've heard.

Finding that SFX Library is like finding the Holy Grail for me. I cite the Prime Trilogy as one of the two sources of inspiration for initially getting into sound design and mixing. It's so cool to learn about all the stuff that went into making such an iconic game, whether that's through research or from old Retro employees making twitter threads about their work!

Very fascinating video! It just goes to show that the importance of giving recognition to the people involved in developing video game projects is crucial and ethical. Additionally, its amazingly how sound effects are recycled to create something new, though it's also appropriate to give credit to whoever provides the original source.

Incredible video. Honestly I didn't even know that you were supposed to credit royalty free sample libraries, and I must admit that I've been guilty of not doing that myself when I made a small game a few years back. Thank you for bringing up these issues!
@SynaMax
@SynaMax Жыл бұрын
Thank you! There's never been really a push for crediting sample libraries in any entertainment industry and while Spectrasonics tried to enforce people who used the Distorted Reality library to credit them, not too many movies or games did that. Freesound tried to do that as well and that's why there's a credit for them in that "Children of Men" movie. Again, it's encouraged but not really enforced by anyone. Also, I would imagine that the amount of libraries would add up over time in a project and it would be difficult to cover them all in the credits (I'm sure it would've been impossible to credit the massive amount of sample libraries Akira Yamaoka used in Silent Hill on that PS1 disk).

Okay so THE dubstep musician who didn't credit your work, DATSIK, got canceled in 2018 for being a predator after shows and after parties. Also hasn't grown what soever since the fallout... Dozens of artists have taken his place and emulated some of his sound design. The rave scene is ROUGH for some; Not for everyone. I can garentee that one one knows that 2011 tune anymore too :) BUT Thank You for going out of your way to preserve bits of video game history that would've been lost to time. As someone who LOVES experimental sound design it's good to build a database such as this. Prime got made me fall in love with the possibilities of non organic sounds

I would love it if you did a video on this as im trying to recreate the tones for my band and its proving really hard to find any info out there. But its kinda a niche suggestion so i get it if youre not interested in doing a video on it

10:40 If it's anything like what they did with Project Gotham Racing... a lot of the music and sounds are under cover names. From the artist I talked to it was for marketing reasons - professionally they get their /name/ in the game and sound/music but don't get /x/ out of it. A lot of the old PGR2 music was done by... well less than the artist list implied. The original artist was never listed, and the artist also never sold any of the music elsewhere. Now with the old NFS series Rom Di Prisco described it as having a kind of "non compete" where he wasn't allowed to sell his music for xx years even if he wanted to, and had the originals. Thus he created a album honoring those tracks without overstepping that contract. Seems big companies like to do this kind of thing... since it's only advantageous to them.

I heard the charge beam in A Certain Magical Index season 2. Pretty sure some of the UI and samus guns sounds ended up in the bee movie game too. I'm also positive that one of the text UI sounds that Portrait of Ruin uses is also from Prime. That one sticks out to me seeing as portrait of ruin is itself a metroidvania.

You should make a video of the save music from Resident Evil 4 and how capcom stole music without crediting the creator. Search and listen to Resident Evil 4 merchant theme named Serenity, apparently the original is called “To Burble and Pine” by David Torn, who , has said recently that Capcom never paid him to use that particular track for the game.
