Firstly Buddhism didn't give rise to casteism...infact they help to lift the position of Vaisyas & Sudras..thats why they supported supported the budhhism... The rise of budhhism was due to complex rituals & sacrifices which was prevalent during LVP , language of upanishad was complex to understand,also rigid cast system in which brahmin & kshtriya was at dominant position...

Let me tell you... Buddhists at that time became against shunga Dynasty and went with Greeks due to which those Buddhists were killed, but other than that Shunga followed path of Sanatan dharma. I don't think this did exactly happen, as Sanchi Stupa still stands tall. I can think Buddhism that time would have been like Christianity of modern times, converting masses and exercising both "territorial" and "soft" power both. And had he been so cruel, Sanchi Stupa would have been just like Nalanda ruins at present. So ya, he wasn't religious fanatic unlike the barbarians entering subcontinent through Gandhara. There was a threat of invasion of greco bacterian ( I Have even watched a historical play on this account {Unnecessary but ya, the writer took inspirations from historical evidences}) Buddhism, has flourished in most of the Hindu Emperors and Empires like Satvahanas or Harshavardhana. I think Buddhism got affected after 6th AD as major area of modern day pakistan and afghanistan and kashmir was under buddhist influence, got influenced with the neo converts. Ironically Ghazni was also a convert. He and his ancestors were so called "pagans"/ "Kafir" Also, debates of Kumaril Bhatt, Mandana Mishra and then Adi Shankaracharya with Buddhist scholars, also influenced the reduction in Buddhism However I would still say, the major reason was invasion from west of tribal cult. Buddhsits/Hindus contradicted each other with arguments(method of dialectics) and not swords or by violence.

It is clear that Singh did kill a Buddhist Emperor and formed a Hindu Empire and promoted Brahmanism. Buddhism was already in decline in India when Islam came in 8th century in the Arabian desert. Muslims were small in numbers in India till the 14th century. So blaming outside forces for the decline of Buddhism does not make sense.

Regarding Budhism, while some kings might have adopted Budhism, people didn't convert in masses. They started treating Budha as another God.
