During the 2024-25 program year at Westminster, Adult Education is exploring the Newer Testament. This class on December 1, 2024, examined Galatians.
Paul’s upset. Really upset. People are teaching the gentile (non-Jewish) believers in Galatia that their salvation is incomplete. That’s not what Paul previously taught them, and it’s not how they experienced the Holy Spirit back when he was among them. This letter insists repeatedly that there is nothing required of the Galatians. Faith is sufficient. It all comes down to faith. That message might sound familiar or basic to you, but it remains as revolutionary now as it was then. If God creates a new reality in Christ so that no one can boast of their advantages or superiority, what kind of community should churches be? What kind of humanity should we understand ourselves to be?
