The boys of Hot Take Central on 590 The Fan KFNS (Cam Janssen, Jim "The Cat" Hayes, Cole Bartemes and Brenden Schaeffer) discuss the Cardinals on the show on Friday, May 17, 2024.
Who has been the biggest disappointment for the Cardinals so far in 2024? What about a positive, a pleasant surprise for the club? The guys give their answers to both questions and also discuss hypothetical trade concepts involving Ryan Helsley and... Jackson Holliday??? (Remain calm everyone, just having some fun!)
Also this question.... who would be the better MLB manager someday: Yadi or Albert?
Hear Brenden Schaeffer join Hot Take Central on Fridays from 7am to 10am on 590 The Fan (KFNS) and 590thefan.com. You can listen to the rest of the crew on weekdays in the same time slot!

Interesting time to ask this question. I had a very long list of disappointing players about a week and a half ago. Honestly, most of the team has been far less disappointing recently. I feel like we're on the upswing and our guys still have time to put reasonable numbers up for themselves and hopefully win many games for the team.

Watching King and Leahy shove and Donnie with the bases clearing double and then scoring on an error. Followed by Masyn’s HR. Baseball can be such fun. Remember this? Go Cardinals.

Biggest disappointment is Lars Nootbaar getting ejected in the first inning, of an important series against a top tier team (Orioles)... What was he thinking? It would be one thing if he got himself ejected late in the game (after 3-4 at bats). I guess he figures if i can't get injured (like usual)... i'll just get ejected from games, so i can miss time. Ok, i realize this wasn't a real answer... so my yearly disappointment is Gorman and surprise is Alec Burleson (because he lost weight, improved his defense, and is hitting .300)

I think it was The Cat who put forth a notion that I've been thinking about ever since the beginning of last year: When Walker came up the first time, consistency was his trademark with hitting streaks and such plus some power often enough to tantalize the FO into wanting to tap into it immediately so they sent him down, threw a new position at him too, and apparently they expected him to come back as Hank Aaron. Ironically, I think he might still be a consistent hitter in a power hitter's body. Is it possible that something about Walker's natural ability may just be to get hits and not necessarily the large amount of HRs the Cardinals are expecting out of him? After all, people are incorrectly evaluated all of the time. I wouldn't mind a Jordan Walker who hit .300 and was dependable. I'm worried that they're going to ruin him.

I think you're right and then add the caveat that guys occasionally grow into power. He's 21! Turns 22 tomorrow I think.
@KevinWM2

@@bschaeffer12 Exactly. That was what I was thinking last year and ever since. I figured that he would get his hits as he often was in the beginning and I loved to see the power, but I figured that would naturally develop into a real force over time--much like they're letting Winn attack his own development. The difference is that Winn excels at what he's expected to so they leave him alone. We saw what Walker naturally is with room to grow. I don't know why the team won't consider that he's less Jack Clark and more Terry Pendleton at the plate...and that's a good thing.

Gorman literally won the 2nd game in this series against the O's. He was all the offense; he leads the team in HR's with 8. Yah lets trade a 24 with a potential 40+HR for years and years to come for a pitcher who will probably flop. Yah you guys really know baseball.....geeesh

Gorman being profiled as a boom/bust player is one thing. I get most fans don't seem to care about batting average anymore, but I still do. If Gorman can hit around .240-.250 with 35 HRs, fine by me. What Gorman is currently doing? Unacceptable. FAR too many SOs and not enough "boom" for me.

@@bschaeffer12 Exactly. His defense is definitely better than Kyle Schwarber's, but when it comes to offense, Gorman's feeling like the low-fat, less "boom" version of the Phillies slugger.

@@ACErob-me9ss Doesn't matter and they have won 7 of their last 9. Goldie, Nootbar have done FAR worse than Gorman. Gorman has fielded far better than Wynn in defense. Yet people like you come on here and say Gorman can't hit, Gorman can't play D. It gets old and tiresome watching people comment on a sport they clearly know nothing about.
