Even after Trumps election he tried to put aside his disappointment and still be the same lovable goof he was to everyone. Needless to say, he was someone I held in high respects. The thing is, that no matter how nice and normal these people were, you have to remember that the people they follow were already on the more radical side. And if they constantly hear about how everyone white is just one step away from being a full-on nazi, they might not believe it initially and consider it preposterous, but at some point they start thinking that all that smoke is a sign of a fire, instead of some asshole journalists trying to make more money from sensationellst lies, since the truth doesn't make them money. I think that if you could go into the past and show any of these people just how crazy radical they have become, they will be horrified.

The simple answer is that these people (and perhaps most people) are conviction-less trend followers. The style of the 90's and early 2000's was to be edgy and obscene. Hence the wave of edgelord musicians, gamers, animators, radio hosts, youtubers, etc. cursing every other word, using slurs like they were people's names, and mentioning any depraved sex act they could into the conversation. The fads changed and the people followed. The free speech advocates of today's internet are the ones who acted on principle, and stuck to said principles. These flip-floppers never had any.

OVERSOCIALIZATION 24. Psychologists use the term “socialization” to designate the process by which children are trained to think and act as society demands. A person is said to be well socialized if he believes in and obeys the moral code of his society and fits in well as a functioning part of that society. It may seem senseless to say that many leftists are oversocialized, since the leftist is perceived as a rebel. Nevertheless, the position can be defended. Many leftists are not such rebels as they seem. 25. The moral code of our society is so demanding that no one can think, feel and act in a completely moral way. For example, we are not supposed to hate anyone, yet almost everyone hates somebody at some time or other, whether he admits it to himself or not. Some people are so highly socialized that the attempt to think, feel and act morally imposes a severe burden on them. In order to avoid feelings of guilt, they continually have to deceive themselves about their own motives and find moral explanations for feelings and actions that in reality have a non-moral origin. We use the term “oversocialized” to describe such people. [2] 26. Oversocialization can lead to low self-esteem, a sense of powerlessness, defeatism, guilt, etc. One of the most important means by which our society socializes children is by making them feel ashamed of behavior or speech that is contrary to society’s expectations. If this is overdone, or if a particular child is especially susceptible to such feelings, he ends by feeling ashamed of HIMSELF. Moreover the thought and the behavior of the oversocialized person are more restricted by society’s expectations than are those of the lightly socialized person. The majority of people engage in a significant amount of naughty behavior. They lie, they commit petty thefts, they break traffic laws, they goof off at work, they hate someone, they say spiteful things or they use some underhanded trick to get ahead of the other guy. The oversocialized person cannot do these things, or if he does do them he generates in himself a sense of shame and self-hatred. The oversocialized person cannot even experience, without guilt, thoughts or feelings that are contrary to the accepted morality; he cannot think “unclean” thoughts. And socialization is not just a matter of morality; we are socialized to conform to many norms of behavior that do not fall under the heading of morality. Thus the oversocialized person is kept on a psychological leash and spends his life running on rails that society has laid down for him. In many oversocialized people this results in a sense of constraint and powerlessness that can be a severe hardship. We suggest that oversocialization is among the more serious cruelties that human beings inflict on one another.

I was a teen who had mildly Centre right values and a growing love for media before gamergate. I had some strong liberal teachers who I disagreed with but I still understood where they came from. Then it hit. My fellow gamer buddies divided because I liked to make fun of “woke” culture because it was funny and edgy. What we did together was now separated because I wasn’t going to tag along with things I disagreed with. I thought this was insane. Then I went to university. I had a third-year yell at me and slander me because I thought that Trump wasn’t the next Hitler. Seriously? I was terrified to then watch apolitical people become warped by regressive left teachings. People who I thought I could mildly disagree with and yet have positive friendships with demonized me for being critical of their “faultless” teachers. This happened within the first week of arriving. After that, I left. I couldn’t graduate in a place demanding I betray my values for a simple business degree. In that time, I discovered trade school and am about to leave with my year 1 certificate. I found more people like that but they were found in the video game developer/artist program. If gamergate never happened, I probably could have easily been one of them, sharing my love for video games, anime, and all things media. I would never have to explain to my now fiancée why I don’t trust major reviews on the games and shows I enjoy or look forward to. I would have been just another nerd, happy to spend time with strangers online getting into meme wars about episodes or game releases that we viewed differently. I probably would have found your gaming channel or your anime reviews before this. I miss those days even though I’m still relatively young.

There was a friend I made when I went to Job Corps. Dude was cool, we both liked Dungeons and Dragons, Star Wars, and the Monster Hunter series. We hit it off pretty well, and he became part of the group I'd play Vampire the masquerade with. Unfortunately, the guy had a serious smoking problem, and since Job Corps is more or less run with the same internal logistics of your average medium-security prison- down to the "economy"- he quickly racked up debt with just about everyone by constantly bumming cigs off people. So, two things happened regularly. One, he was always- *ALWAYS* - broke. We only got to go out and shop for more stuff (soap, shampoo, etc. Of course, snacks and cigs were the big ticket items, if you could get 'em in) once every other week or so, and he did not have the money to buy what he needed. Being the guy I am, I resolved to help him out. I'd buy extra razors and soap and shampoo, and let him have it free of charge. I'd buy him lunch sometimes, or share snacks (this was common practice at the gaming table. I'd bring sodas and stuff for everyone). I never once asked him to pay me back, or return the favor-- and he never did. The second thing was that he was in debt with so many people, and had racked up such profound amounts of debt that people were threatening violence against him. And again, being the guy I am, I bailed him out. I only did it once, and I explained that kind of stuff can't keep happening. He offered to pay me back for that, but in his usual fashion, did not. Anyway, this went on for a year and a half, roundabouts, before I completed the Job Corps program, and moved back home. I kept in contact with him, and the other members of my gaming group through Facebook (this was before Discord), and we'd meet up every friday-saturday for a session of DnD. For a while, things were okay. And then, it happened. He starts by telling me he found a boyfriend. Now, that by itself was not cause for alarm. But, him suddenly ducking out of sessions for at least two weeks at a time, was suspicious. I asked him about it, because him dipping out like that was holding up our sessions for everyone else, and he tells me he's just trying to get his life on track, find a job, spend time with the bf, etc. I tell him it's alright, just as long as he keeps me in the loop about being absent, and we go on. Then, he starts missing a lot more sessions. Most fridays, I can't get in touch with him at all. His boyfriend refuses to accept any friend requests, and will not respond to me, either. I worry, y'know, because I thought something bad had happened. But then, I see a post on my facebook wall one day. Apparently, he's cutting ties with his own mom over something she said. The post didn't specify what, and the original post was deleted, so, at the time, I had no idea why. And then I saw at least three more, one for his uncle, one for a cousin, and another for his dad. Same basic "I refuse to spend my time in the company of such intolerant people." message as with his mom. His uncle responded by telling him to remove the stick from his ass before the whole thing was deleted. And then the flood gates opened. He stopped showing up for DnD sessions at all, barely spoke to anyone in the gaming group, and every time I'd open facebook, it would be a wall full of posts by him on various antifa pages, to the effect of "Down with oppression!", or "Let's kill the nazis!" So, I asked him about it. He tells me that he's afraid that Trump is going to have all the gay/bi/trans/ alphabet soup group people rounded up and shot-- which I tell him is bogus, and he should know better. He says that he'd gladly die fighting the nazis, which I say is crazy. He tells me that I don't understand, and to fuck off. The weeks roll by, and it becomes apparent to me that he's spending huge chunks of his day, like 6-10 hours a day, if not more, posting communist propaganda, and signing up to just about any Antifa page you can think of. On the rare occasions that I did get to speak to him, he was becoming increasingly unpleasant to talk to. It was like I barely knew him anymore. Like he was someone else. But, I didn't press things. I was patient with him, because he clearly wasn't in a very stable mindset, with trying to find a job and all (y'know, when he wasn't busy posting on facebook for half the day). "It's stressful," I kept saying, "I'll just give him time, and he'll calm down." Needless to say, I kept saying that more for my own benefit than for his. But one day, I saw him talking shit to one of our mutual friends, and I jumped in. I told him that I had been watching this unfold for a while, and it needed to stop. I told him that wanting to be a martyr for fascists is just as bad as being a nazi, and he needs to lay off the people who care about him, and quit treating them like shit because they're worried about him and want to help him. He tells me "Horse shoe theory exists to protect nazis!", deletes the thread, and then goes silent for another few days. I come back, and he's removed himself from the gaming group, blocked not only me, but everyone else in it, and left me a message saying that "It's not that I'm not interested in playing DnD, it's just that I'm not interested in playing it with nazis and capitalist pigs-- like you." And after all the shit I'd done for him out of the goodness of my heart, after all the time spent hanging out at Job Corps, after me being nothing but a friend to him, the fact that he wanted to treat me like that. That he wanted to just toss me out like old trash. That, after all that, he had not even an ounce of loyalty, or concern for the people around him, that he'd gladly forsake them for politics. Well, let's just say I didn't take it well. I sent him an email telling him good riddance to bad trash, and that he was a shitty friend. He, again, called me a nazi, and a capitalist pig, and told me to "enjoy my privilege". I've never spoken to him since, and I often wonder what became of that chain-smoking, debt-ridden idiot. tl;dr: Social justice and far-left politics change people in the worst ways. And sometimes, no matter how good a friend you are, it'll take them away from you.

Well said. Jordan Peterson mentioned something about being possessed by your own ideology to the point where you lose your personality or your own code of ethics or upbringing. It's like losing your controller and becoming an NPC. There, I said it. Gamergate wasn't what made me realize that gaming media was stupid and corrupt. Oddly enough, the coverage of DmC Devil May Cry was. For my friend, it was the coverage of Mass Effect 3 and the ending. What started to get me more and more "political" was the sheer amount of times I or my fellow gamers were called racist and sexist for having a different opinion. It's come to a point that I find myself identifying more with a political party that I used to make jokes about...and damn proud of it. The more you try to force something or someone to go one direction, the more likely they'll go the other way.

Perhaps the earliest memory I have with encountering these types of people was way back in 2009, five years before GamerGate. (The term "Social Justice Warrior" didn't even exist yet, did it?) Back then, I was making a Sonic fancomic called "Sonic Future" that was hosted on a website called "Smack Jeeves", which was supposed to be about the next generation, focusing on the potential kids of iconic Sonic characters several years in the future. So, long story short, when I got the the seventh arc, this crazy flame war sprang up ignited with seemingly no provocation by a user called "RenTech" (this was also before the site implemented the ability to block specific users from commenting, which came right at the tail end of this, and the head admin was in fact aware of this flame war... long story... so I can't help but wonder if this was the tipping point for getting the feature implemented...), who banded together several users who had *never* posted in the comments section at any point before, started posting constant hateful comments. There were dozens... sometimes over a hundred... on every single page for a good, long while. Personal attacks, people rallying others to figure out my password (which I have changed a few times) so they could hack and delete my account one day... you name it. But, more to the point, one of their favorite and most baffling attacks against me was their constant claims that I was racist. They also kept claiming I was sexist and homophobic, but as far as I can remember, they never gave any kind of reason for insisting this. But the racism claim? This was the claim they had... something resembling an excuse for. It makes no sense, but here we go. The "evidence" these "SJW precursors" had to "prove" that I was "racist" was that my Sonic fan characters didn't have dark mussels. *Yes.* Specifically, they tried to point to my "Son of Sonic the Hedgehog" character, Indigo the Hedgehog (who had this ironic running gag about being pathologically terrified of loop-de-loops, having been traumatized by attempting to run through one and failing hard early on in the comic...) And because I didn't make genetics bend over backwards, that was their "proof" that I was somehow racist. It. Made. No. Sense. None of these anthropomorphic animal characters were deemed "black enough" for them, so they doubled down on trying to use that to paint me as racist. It was just so bafflingly-idiotic and based in no logical sense, that I was just at a loss for words on how to even refute it. Of course, these people largely took care of the problem themselves eventually, when most of them collectively decided that, since constantly yelling at me and trying to figure out my password wasn't getting me out of the webcomic scene, they somehow believed that the best course of action was to go to the comics of *the head admin himself* and start throwing flame wars in his comments sections; making nonsensical personal attacks against him. Surprising nobody but themselves, Admin started banning them from the site, and those who hadn't been hit, or had sockpuppet accounts, kept screaming and screeching and trying to blame it all on me, but I had all but broken out the popcorn at that point, as I got to enjoy the satisfaction of watching about 95% or so of these people dig their own graves into their comeuppance, while I didn't even have to lift a finger. So, the nonsensical chaos had a nonsensical (but still extremely satisfying) conclusion. I had never been involved in such a controversy or been "internet famous" at the time, and it was about a year into me using The Internet as a public social space, rather than just sending E-Mails to relatives and playing flash games like Teen Titans Battle Blitz and Ultimate Sonic Flash, so it was a very life-changing and eye-opening experience for me. My one regret is that I deleted most of the comments they left after a time, as I wanted to keep everything about the comic family-friendly, but now I wish I had kept them up for archival purposes. I've toughened up a LOT more of a backbone since 2009. In the aftermath, and to this day, there was only ever really one single person who ever came back and apologized to me in a message for his actions, and I un-blocked him on the spot. Seems he had changed just as much as I have. I wish him well.

Just about anyone you contact will be extremely cagey, and really only come to you if you can do something for them, with no interest in making friends, just in case you get caught doing some dirt down the line. Even the language is policed to the extreme on some of the youtuber discords I'm in, leading to nobody having a real conversation that's not the 'smiling with gritted teeth in fear the hammer will come down on you' shit that doesn't really go anywhere. I don't miss them at all. The friends who I lost due to radicalizing, they did that to themselves. They chose to become Communist Leftists. While it IS true that I have become more Rightwing over the past couple years, I have purposely countered that by dabbling into some Leftiwng policies too. And because of that, I consider myself to be Economically Liberal but Socially Conservative. I believe in free speech, free markets, and private property, but I also believe in stick to tradition and respect the culture you came from, and not betraying basic requests from your parents to continue the family line. But because the Overton window has shifted so far left, I am considered a "Nazi" just because I'm not a Communist. I broke up with my last gf in May of 2020 because SHE radicalized into a Communist, and guess what? I do not miss her at all, and I don't regret what I did. She did that on her own, and while I probably could've done more to stop it, it was entirely her fault. She did that to herself, and the other friends I lost did it to themselves as well. I uh, I did indeed lose some friends during the election, but my enlightening came shortly before that. Or rather, the start of it began about 2011, when my fiance broke up with me. I had co-created a forum of edgelords (that used Che Guevarra as a mascot and back in 2006 I didn't think much of it) in the mid-2000s and we were Nintendo fans. In fact we spun off of Nintendo's forum back in the day (RIP). I was one of the prime contributing members outside of co-founding it and was exalted in my position throughout our small community. Everyone loved me, for the most part. Then the breakup happened and lies began spreading very very fast. As the man of the relationship, I was blamed for it's downfall and my name was drug through the mud as a bit of "revenge" I guess for how horrible I person I allegedly was. The divide in our community over who supported me to who supported her was less a divide and more of a 90/10 split. Those that stuck by my side waned in their support of me over time anyway, and my Facebook friends dropped from 140 some people to 72. It would take until the Trump campaign in 2015-2016 that this community stopped putting up with my "bullshit opinions" as they slipped further and further left (a fact I should have seen coming at the start of this all because our mascot was a literal communist) and I was subsequently exiled. Not banned, but I don't return because I have nothing but enemies there now. In hindsight it was probably the best thing to happen to me this decade. I was so depressed getting reamed out by people I used to trust and care about. In fact, I invited them all to the wedding I had planned with my aforementioned fiance, I trusted and loved them that much. It was painful to realize everything you thought you knew about your friends was a lie and they never really liked you to begin with. To say I miss them isn't entirely accurate, as they really didn't change much. The situation changed and I lost my usefulness and therefore their respect. Nowadays I hang out with the same five-six people who aren't so much ideologically similar to me, but that politics don't even enter the fray. When a discussion does arise and we disagree, it's never to the point where our friendship is hanging in the balance. I mean, why would it be? Why would an actual friend disavow you because you hold different opinions? Simple, they wouldn't. They aren't SJWs and we do share a mutual disgust for that type of person, but a few of them are further left than myself and thats okay. All in all, I regret nothing and am better off where I am now than in that cesspool of filth I once called a home.

It is funny how people criticizing the left often forget that the aim of companies is make money, and if they saw being right wing would be the way to make money, they would. The problem is: If there were such thing as left and right wing politics, it would seem the same left position looks more and more radical as much as you lean to the right, and vice-versa. Unfortunately, right and left wing is a oversimplification, barely a lie. From long time political science makes distinction into 3 vectors of political views that shows a person in left or right "equal position" actually may be of radically distinct positions in regards of reality of things. That is why thing got the way they got in the West. People simply consider other people with almost the same views opposition based on 1 or 2 positions, among 100s of issues. The main point of the video has real scientific backing (if you treat psychology as science, which you should) - the effect of believing what you were forced to say is called "cognitive dissonance". Basically its a form of subconscious rationalization of what someone did, like "If I wrote that, then its not so bad, because im not a bad person" Its really well documented and has been shown to change people opinions and beliefs (although on smaller matters). It also applies to other behaviours - Pay someone to eat something he doesnt like and some time later he may think it wasnt so bad. Because who would eat something disgusting for 10$? Not me, Im not cheap, it wasnt THAT bad!

the bit where you talk about "thinking like a far leftie until you become one" reminds me of the time i tried changing my thought process to that of a far leftie, and god damn it felt weird, like i knew that i didn't actually believe the things i was thinking, but nevertheless it felt as if i did believe em and the original part of me was just obverving and going like "wth are you saying"

Damn, this is an old video of yours (relatively) but that reminded me of a friend I knew in grade 5. A year later she moved to new york city. another 3 years and now she is still my friend, but I can tell that she had become much more radical and I feel like she is getting worse. I don't know how long our friendship will last. But damn, it feels bad.

Fair points, but I'll add something else: The shit that ppl did in their late teens / early-mid 20's is not what they'll be doing 10-15 years later (unless they're PewDiePie ... , and if you'll notice he's starting to change too by sprinkling in more and more politics -- but he's doing it the smart way, by doing it slowly and trying to take his audience with him on his journey). Can I take a stab at the age the ppl you're talking about are in now ? Late 20's or early to mid 30's ? There's one constant to that age group, and that is that unless you're super successful, you sooner or later begin to notice the number of opportunities and the chances for a fresh restart deminish ... -- which in turn push you to ... domesticate / normalize . It's the opposite of your late teens & early 20's when all the doors are open and (relatively to later in life) you can start anew on a dime . So your friends, they may or may not have gone sjw cray-cray (but since the sjw cray-cray is the new norm in media, they're gravitating there) , as they may be just hunting for that security in life ... , a security that is an illusion on the Left . 10 years behind the Iron Curtain have taught me that very well, as in that era, your neighbors, and your co-workers would happily turn you in for "wrongthink" against the Party .

YOU can't change someone's mind. THEY have to change their mind. They make the choice, and no matter how compelling your evidence, they must accept it to change. If they don't. They won't. That's what I've always interpreted Sargon's belief about changing minds to be. Like Socrates said, I cannot teach a man anything. I can only make him think.

I'm glad I got through college without being thoroughly changed. It's probably because I'm at times a complete contrarian. When everyone in my group of friends say they like Dr. Pepper, then I'm gonna be that guy to scream out "SCREW YOU I like Pepsi" even though I despise Pepsi and like Dr. Pepper. I'm okay with being a contrarian asshole with things that don't matter, like soda preferences, but when it comes to things that really do matter, then it becomes me obstinately refusing to back down from my beliefs. I took an Ancient History class in my freshman year, and when it came time to discuss The Bible the professor attempted to tear it apart. I knew most of the other people in the class were devout Christians, in fact better Christians than myself (at least in how they portrayed themselves outwardly), but they all hung their heads low and didn't speak up against him because they just wanted to get that A and move on. I said to myself "SCREW THAT, I don't care if I get a C or even a D, I'm not gonna let this guy get away with slandering my faith!" and I debated him right then and there for the rest of the class period. And waddaya know, the rest of them have as far as I have observed swerved far left authoritarian, and I have remained center-right libertarian where I've always been, and for that I'm now apparently a Nazi for defending my lord and savior Jesus Christ from my woke professor.

Holy crap. None of this ever occurred to me. I just thought the market shifted and people lost interest in that type of content as they aged and that’s why a lot of the big names dropped off (and Spoony had mental health issues). Well, that and cringy sketches and character movies no one wants to see Huh. And here I am with this writing, standup, and acting experience on the shelf looking for a new creative hobby as I return to standup. Well, I guess sometimes you just gotta be the change you want to see.

Remember the movie 'Old Yeller'? Old Yeller had been a faithful companion to a boy named Travis until one day a rabid wolf attacked him... sadly Old Yeller became rabid and Travis was left but to put him down with a shot to the head. What I just described was Channel Awesome and the rest of the people you've mentioned. They have become Old Yeller and they have gotten worse and worse and worse every year. It'll be a matter of time when most of them get the metaphoric Old Yeller treatment that Travis had to administer because it seems they're too far gone and honestly all they care about is feeding their derangement. It's sad but at this point i'm over it.

a bit late, but i have a piece. i really look up to Fraser Agar and FarFromSubitle as a whole, they really helped me out when i was a teen and had no social life to speak of and the first time in my life i found myself in a dark place mentally. video games awesome was something i could look forward to and have in the background and simulate "hanging out" with people. their comedy was peak and genuine, and in instilled in me that if i ever had a internet following of any kind i would want it to be like the turbo club. i never really hung out with other turbos aside from playing on the TF2 server, but they were all nice. the thing i most enjoyed about the attitude of the community was how everyone could have an opinion, and back at the time around 2014 before gamergate, anyone could have an edgy take. maybe you though a game was boring, maybe you though a movie was cringe, and fraser himself was no slough to these kind of takes. there were alot of things i disagreed with fraser on, like his favoritism for corporations or that a technocracy was inevitable and anyone who stands in its way is an idiot, or if he disliked a game i loved. but i didn't think less of him for it, and in a morbidly funny way i looked forward to his takes because his perspective was still insightful. them moving to japan at 2018 didn't really have a big impact on me not really watching anymore, it was the fact that the "shadow-chat war" happened. long story short turbos that lost their minds because of trump and started to vent in the VGA forums about how the world had gone mad, and when level-headed turbos started to bring up that this wasn't the end of the world, the bans started to drop. for those that don't know, you had to donate money to join the turbo club and gain access to the forums, so then it started to bleed into youtube commets and twitter with the banned turbos trying to say their piece and that the mods (shocker) were abusing power. the mods then claimed that it was "trolls" who were paying 5$ to invade the forums and the live chat, which was a lie because i knew some of the turbos that were banned because we were both from alabama. with shit hitting the fan, fraser justifies the actions of the mods by going full retard with TDS and that anyone that supports the president he doesn't want as a fan, and even glouted about taking their money as "idiot tax". and not long after, their website was deleted as fraser was "scaling down" the production of the show. so all of those tid-bits are lost to time. in the end, i am not mad. i'm 27 years old now and i got what i needed from the show, i've been thinking about watching some of the classics like their mario party games or the heavy rain shows. but i would reather focus on finding something fresh and interesting rather then reminisce and potentially become depressed and bitter. i still think foundly of fraser, but i know the show isn't for me anymore. in the end he did give me one more hot-take that i learned the most from, principles, and sticking to them, matter.

I know what happened to all those early social media adopters you admire: They grew up. They no longer feel a personal connection to the adolescents and young adults who gravitate to their content, because some of them are closer to 40 than 20 now and it makes them self-conscious. So now they lash out at the same age cohort they used to produce content for. And the whole time, they're just projecting by saying "it was so much better when I was that age."

Instead of more "conservative", I'd like to argue that they become more 'safe'. I've found my views inching closer to the radical left, because that's what is 'safe', to have. Even though I hate these ideas, I've started internalizing them. Most of my friends have done the same as well. The 'conservatives', also seem to do the same, unless they live in an area that shuns them. (Friend who worked in Oregon)
