Amelia, don't be afraid to go up and see Sarah. You may not know what to say but who cares - say what you feel, keep it inside, but just be there. When my mom passed during her short battle with cancer I never once said, so what happens when you pass? Mom, I'm going to miss you. Mom, are you scared? I didn't go to those places in our conversations, my sister did, but not me. I was afraid. A few days before she had to go into the hospital she had a manicure (she always looked her best)...She was in the hospital for 7 days before she passed and all I could think of to say was 'Your nails look good'. Even as she was deteriorating she thought of me, she was overheard in the bathroom asking my dad how I was managing. I guess what I am saying is try not to deny yourself the opportunity of telling her how much she means to you, how she saved you, and how much you love her. Do what you can and trust me, you are not alone in your discomfort, I was 37 when I was faced with my mom's illness, and boy was it scary. Be you. You are loved. xo Alyssa

This is such good advice. I had a similar experience when I was 16, several decades ago, when what I felt & wanted to express was trapped within a terror of saying the wrong thing, of making the person feel worse. I have always regretted not telling them. Obviously Sarah’s comfort & well being is a priority but if it makes you feel better, tell her what you are feeling. I think you will be glad you did ( and had more courage than me)

@@Jules-77 Tomorrow will be the 20th anniversary of her death, I will never forget that last week... what made me happy though was knowing she knew me better than I thought, she knew how scared I was and allowed for that in her journey. She is still with me today as she was shortly after she died, when my tears were too much to bear she showed up. I am so sorry for your loss, you were so young. Each of our journeys is our own and for you and for me that meant keeping it inside. We do what we can, which was our best at the time. All good. We love and are continually loved. xo Alyssa

I was the sibling in my family that had the convos. I understood that I could do that. I asked the amazing home hospice folks about what they thought was important. And then winged it. It’s just now, over 2 decades later, that I am dealing with the truth of that burden. For me. Thanks for pointing out that we all have a different perspective and we all have the amazing opportunity to just be present how we are able. Your words kinda soothed me. ❤

Funny you mentioned your moms nails. My mom was a rockstar in her community and her tech went to her home hospice every 2-3 weeks and did her nails at the bedside. She did my moms nails until the day she passed. A few years later I worked at the hospice my mom had. An honor. But they had a mtg at my office one day and my mom’s RN came. I went over to her to tell her how much she did for my mom and our family. At first she didn’t remember me but she suddenly flashed on, “Cynthia, the Queen, her lovely kingdom and her stunning nails!” 😉 ❤

Hi Amelia, it sounds like Josh and Sarah are fortunate to have you as their daughter as well! You sound like a very caring and appreciative person. I am 60 years old, but when I was your age, I was dealing with caregiving and illness and the death of someone I loved very much. I can really understand what you are saying about feeling hesitant to go up, not knowing what to say and how scary it all feels. I guess what I would like to tell you is what I wish someone could have told me, and that is that just being who you are in this moment is enough. They love you very much and that love isn't based on you always saying the right thing. So just be yourself and look at the little things you can do to help like playing with the kids and distracting them so they can have a break from the heavy emotions. Don't be afraid of death honey, it truly isn't like the movies. When someone dies at home in bed like Sarah will, it is just like sleep. Usually when someone is dying even if their eyes are closed, they can still hear what is going on around them. So if you are up in the room or are there when Sarah is dying just tell her how much you love her, she will know. Or maybe you can read something to her that you wrote down ahead of time. Sometimes but not all the time as the end gets close people become a little anxious and maybe cry out a little and the hospice nurse gives them medication that makes them feel better. Then right before someone dies, they usually but not always make a little gurgly sound in their throat and then it is very quiet and peaceful and still. The beautiful thing with Sarah is that she has the hospice there to make sure she is not in pain. Unknown things are scary, but don't be afraid of what is going to happen next because although it is very very sad, it will mean that she will not hurt anymore and because you love her so much try to concentrate on that and let it comfort your heart. Maybe you can even write a gratitude journal and when you are sad list all the things that you remember about her that were so special and meaningful to your life. And as you go through life let Sarah's example guide you as you grow into womanhood and into the person you want to be. That will honor her more than any words you can say. Dear one, you are going to be alright even through there is going to be grief ahead, keep close to Josh and Teresa and follow their lead and everything will be okay.

Amelia, it is wonderful to meet you! I am so very sorry that you are losing a person that has had such a positive impact on your life. This definitely falls into the category of "Life isn't fair sometimes". Don't worry about what to say to Sarah - I am sure she hears you - just tell her about what is going on in your life - even just the simple day to day things. You can also tell her about all of the things you remember about your times together. Those things could be fun to review and maybe get a laugh or two if Sarah is up to it. I know that, wherever Sarah is going to next, she will remember you and continue to watch over you. Do what you are comfortable with - and don't agonize about the rest of it. Oh, and can I just say, I love how all of these videos are not "staged" - there are cats and dogs, windchimes and people wondering around - they are just full of everyday life!

Hi Amelia, what a lovely surprise to meet you and that very busy Dog. When I lost my Mum at a young age I thought the world had stopped. It did for me. I felt cheated and so alone. I think of her every day, however I always told me Mum how I felt about her. We spent some wonderful times in those last days around her bed near the end. For us, it was so quick. I have no regrets or why didn’t I say or do that. I had said and done it all. You never “get over” the loss of someone so significant in your life. My thoughts and heartfelt prayers to you.
