Hey everyone! Just going to jump ahead of the comments here to address the audio, because I know it still has a pretty severe echo. I do have a plan to fix it, but with most of the world on lockdown at the moment, I felt it was better to just get this video done so you all have something to watch while stuck at home. I promise we're not done making improvements though, and want to thank everyone who helped make Magic Arcanum what it is today. Davriels planeswalker ability and sorcery card both doing discard and noncombat damage make so much more sense after this video. I run them both in my mono black. I wish he had a couple more cards, maybe a legit plaeswalker with 3 abilities, or some more sorcery/instants.

Ob Nixilis is probably more likely to return in the next zendikar set, but as the 'bad guy' as on the flavor text of Infernal Reckoning it says "When these intruders are gone, Zendikar will be my throne, my palace, my playground". I think Davriel will be sitting out for a few more sets.

If anything out of the WotS books is to remain canon, I hope it's the Ob Nixilis / Davriel pairing. Obzy himself has wiped at least one plane intentionally, before being bound to Zendikar; so a contract between him and Davriel would become a power struggle with the fate of entire worlds at stake!

I like the subtle hint on Davriel’s WoTS card. He goes to great lengths to secure and hide his identity, so on his card his shadowy magic is obscuring his name. Not sure if it’s just me reading into it or if it was intentional but I like it! 😅

This is just my own personal pet theory, but Time Spiral block had a bunch of cards set on other planes. There were a few cards (Patrician’s Scorn and Street Wraith) set on a Victorian plane with a bunch of ghost stuff going on, which personally, I feel may be Davriel’s home plane.

Davriel’s magic actually does cause pain. In Children of the Nameless, when he took fire magic from some cathar the cathar collapsed in pain from the magic taken from his mind. I think that is why Dav’s card deals damage when a card is discarded.

It doesn't deal damage when discarded. Only if they have one or zero cards in hand at their upkeep. So it's not quite the same, but I guess we can consider it to be "close enough."

Wow, I didn't realize there was so much story being Davriel, hes a total badass! Not sure about your casting choice of Nicolas Cage though, I'd opt for Cillian Murphy. Nicolas Cage to me hinges closer to a crazy taking to the voice in your head. Davriel seems more collected, and calculating. He also has to be someone you can see successfully making deals with demons. I also think Cillian would rock the mask, cloak, cane look like a boss.

I don't think it's exactly the case, but I've always thought that cowardice fits very well in black. Not the type that cowardice that makes you run as fast as you can, but the type that makes you prey on the weak to look strong. So having immense power and using it to secure a place to sip your tea without worrying is very black to me.

I think you got his demons mixed up. the one with guesses was basically his butler/bag carrier. he got Davriel's soul if he guessed right, but didn't have a deadline on the guesses (iirc) There was *another* demon who acted as his bodyguard and got his soul so long as he didn't die before his 50th-ish birthday. (little did he know that Davriel has already died once, essentially rendering their contract null and void. not that he's going to tell the demon that.) He also has a succubus secretary that he contracted for the sole reason that he loved how thorough her contracts were. She gets his soul if she seduces him, but unfortunately for her, Davriel has 0 sex drive and her attempts always fall flat.

Yes each demon had a slightly different contract and each served a different purpose in Davriel's day-to-day, but ultimately they were all working for him and protecting him somewhat, and were 'tricked' into signing lopsided contracts. The individual details aren't important; my example was more to show how Davriel approaches his deals with demons in a general sense, so I used a little bit from each of his contracts in the book.

Those are great choices. I was trying to save both for other more important characters, but depending on how Davriel's storyline works out it might be worth using them on him.
