“De vrienden van Amstel” is a yearly Dutch event where Dutch singers/bands colab with other singers/bands. So for this event both bands worked together. They named their colab Heldenblok”. Held means hero and that means that they covered the music of their musical heroes.

Wow, thanks so much for your positive reaction! I thought you would like it, but you never know for sure off course 😊 They are both quite huge bands in the Netherlands and they never play together, only on this festival. The singer of Kensington (Eloi Youssef) unfortunately decided last year to leave the band after 16 years, Di-rect is still going strong and making beautiful music (I will send you some links) They play phenomenal live, this year they did a tour with a live orchestra 🥰 and I’m a big fan of the singer Marcel ‘Jack Black’ Veenendaal 😅Have a lovely Easter weekend!

Heldenblok means hero-block. This festival (by far the biggest in the Netherlands) brings artists from ALL genres together. Both Di-Rect (with the curly haired singer) and Kensington have great songs but in this collab they go back to their highschool heroes. You should just check out both of them as well as ''Vrienden van Amstel live'' (the festival itself, ordanized and sponsored by Amstel beer).

"Vrienden van Amstel LIVE" is an annual event that started in 1998 as a small party in a cafe in Amsterdam called "De Heeren van Amstel" playing in front of 300 people. Currently it's been turned into a concertseries where the performing artists play several concerts on consecutive days. For 2024 they played 14 dates. In an arena at Ahoy in Rotterdam that can fit 15k plus people. In 2020 they played 12 shows. But the real special thing about it is that the organisers invite several soloartists and bands, and they mix them together. The performances might be covers from other artists/bands, but also their own music but then with a different sound beacuse you add another artist. I don't really think you have anything like it in the US, but it would be like having a concert where you could have Taylor Swift perform with Coldplay, followed by Beyoncé performing with Metallica for example. Also at the "Vrienden van Amstel LIVE" shows they come up with all kinds of extravagant ideas to wow the audience.

It was even a greater live experience than the usual and no one really knew that it was until later. Since this was right at the beginning of 2020, soon after the lock-downs for Covid started and no live event happened for some time. Kensington just released their 5th studio album in November of 2019 and did not get to perform it live outside Netherlands until much much later.

They are not cover bands but if you have two top tier bands playing together you simply cannot expect one band to play the other’s music and visa versa. You join on neutral ground. The bands have 4 and 5 members but the choir and orchestra are there to fill in the music you hear on the record but could not otherwise play on stage.
