Who is Hilma?

This is the first episode of our docuseries on the making of HILMA, a contemporary opera exploring the life and art of Hilma af Klint, a queer abstract artist whose paintings were inspired by mystic messages she channeled from a higher power.
Formerly excluded from the artistic canon as a woman outside of the mainstream, the rediscovery of Klint's works within the past decade has required art historians to rewrite the narrative and recognize Klint as a pioneer of the abstract art movement.
HILMA, produced in partnership with New Georges premieres on the Wilma stage on June 4, 2024. HILMA is supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.
