This is the third video in a series I'm doing on social media manipulation. Facebook is an extremely interesting case to study. They're the largest social media platform in the world and one could argue they've felt the pain of this stuff more than any other platform. I find it to be EXTREMELY interesting that they're transitioning to an ACTIVE position on misinformation as opposed to REACTIVE. I think it's super easy for the public to dismiss what facebook says because of their branding/trust issues.... but regardless of what you think about the company, they are one of the most attacked platforms in the world. Therefore, they're the most experienced people at countering this threat. At times it seems like they're getting their butts kicked, and at others it seems like they're winning. Facebook is not blameless, but directing all of our conversational energy towards the platform itself avoids a major issue, namely the people using the platform to do harm, or to inauthentically promote/discredit something. The case of the fitness coach was disturbing. This is a well-known individual with millions of followers. She was clearly benefitting from inauthentic followers and commenters. Someone sympathetic to her clearly wrote the comments. The evidence was very damning in my opinion.... but ultimately I made the decision to blur our her page because attribution is difficult. What if someone purchased face comments on Smarter Every Day and said nice things, then framed me as the one who bought the comments? These are the types of things that undermine the very notion of social media integrity. Another thought here. If you don't use facebook, you may be tempted to leave an anti-facebook comment. Totally cool. I'm not a heavy facebook user myself. I don't post my videos to facebook often because of their intellectual property policies. That being said, I've noticed that the tone of many of these comments has a "superiority" feel to them, with most of the disdain directed at the platform facebook itself. I think this is extremely interesting because its possible platform manipulation has affected how you feel about these platforms themselves. The people I met are trying very hard to make a high integrity platform, but it's clear they are fighting a huge corrupt industry, and in some cases a literal disinformation war. My language will be more charitable in the future.

I love your point about how extremist posts don't have to actually represent the legitimate viewpoint of anyone to be effective, but just need to represent some semblance of truth in order to get both sides ramped up with fear and insecurity. Hey SmarterEveryDay, did you happen to ask the Facebook people about their company selling data to groups like Cambridge Analytica so that ads can be specifically targeted, including ads which are designed to sway voters? Or why your barber friend never got information back from Instagram? I appreciate that this video is attempting to bring transparency to major social media, AND I AGREE WITH THE TIPS PROVIDED, but if we treat them like they've suddenly become our friends, then we forget that they themselves helped create the problem. In the Cambridge Analytica case, they used an API designed by Facebook to integrate Facebook data with 3rd party apps. This was designed for things like calendar apps, alternative clients to read Facebook posts, etc. That was the intended use-case of the API. Everyone that handed over access to their data here had to willingly permit access via the Cambridge Analytica app. The exception is the friends of those users, as anything their friends had shared with them were also now shared with Cambridge Analytica. At face value, it makes sense why friend data would be shared. Say a 3rd party wanted to display your friends’ birthdays on their calendar app. They couldn’t do that without some access to what your friends shared with you. In the Cambridge Analytica case, they requested all possible permissions that could be granted by the API. As an intuitive example, look at it as though the users that granted these permissions did the equivalent of signing in to their Facebook on Cambridge Analytica’s laptop and telling them to look through whatever they wanted. The other major issue is that Cambridge Analytica violated Facebook’s API access policy by storing user information on their own servers. This is why Facebook’s response has been a matter of more closely monitoring who they allow to use the API and reducing the amount of data that can be accessed via the API. As far as I know, the only money Facebook made off of this was through the ads they sold. There was no monetary exchange involved in API access. Additionally, it’s worth noting that advertisers target specific groups, but that the ad platform does not allow the advertisers to directly know who are in those groups. They do not sell their marketing data, but they sell their ad platform service, which uses that marketing data.

Wish really good videos like this one would get even more views. I feel like in this series you have mentioned some of THE biggest challenges we're facing for the future of the internet and in society. The problem is that people who are NOT native to technology (like my parents and most of their generation) can't even start to grasp what this means and how extensive these problems/challenges are. Thank you so much for making this as digestible as possible!

Great work Destin. I fear you're trying to educate people who don't want to listen, but this series has been fantastic. More education on matters like this could eventually make enough of a difference that we are able to recognise the dangers ourselves and not only no longer require algorythims and teams to detect them, but render this method of influence so ineffective that it is no longer used.

I'm way more worried about Facebook manipulating what I see than I am about fake accounts and campaigns trying to do the same. The answer to bad free speech is more (good) free speech. Giving permission to Facebook to censor things you find offensive or manipulative is going to backfire on you some day when Facebook decides that it doesn't like something YOU'RE saying. Social media companies should focus on giving users better control to choose for themselves what they do or don't want to see.

the problem is unbeatable, because its in the nature of social media sites for this to happen. these sites were made for advertising and commercial gain and to sell your info, and they thrive off of controversial and polarizing posts since those get the most attention. their attempts to be more transparent and provide information about each post is just a way for them to say that theyre doing something, because a person who is scrolling through they're feed and sees something that makes them feel emotional or riles them up, wont be thinking to follow links and find put if its true or no. especially if it confirms some bias of theirs. theyre going to get hyped up and share that post without a second thought. i would love to see the actually percentage of fb users who click those links and try to find the sources and validity of a post
