Who is Marvel's Sentry? A clear message to DC's Superman.

This video explores the abilities, powers, and origin of the Marvel Comics character "Sentry." From Robert Reynolds being an addict that accidentally consumed a Weapon X super-soldier serum thousands of times stronger than Captain America's, becoming one of the most powerful heroes on Earth, battling against World Breaker Hulk, Galactus, Doctor Doom, Ultron, Thor, and many other heavy-hitter supervillains and supervillains, to his struggles against his nemesis and own evil half named The Void; Let's take a look at this massively powerful Marvel superhero, and the franchise's answer to DC Comics Superman. I truly don't understand why people keep saying that the Sentry is Marvel's version of Superman, or one of the Superman copycats. His abilities and feats to me are completely different than Superman's and he's done more impressive things then Superman has in my opinion.

This is something that has grinded my gears recently. Everyone and their mothers keep saying "Superman-like" or "Superman-type character" when describing various heroes. And, full discloser, Supes is one of my favorites but things are getting out of hand. Its gotten to the point where being able to fly and having super strength is all it takes to be Superman. There are plenty of characters who are clearly rip-offs or meant to be Superman analogs. Hyperion, Homlander, Gladiator: I'd say they fit. But Sentry, Blue Marvel, even Omni-Man I don't think fit the bill. With ones like Omni-Man, you can argue inspired but the similarities are minimal. Again, the flight and super strength is really it.

The Sentry is a cool character. I don't get the same feeling I get when I think of other Over Powered characters. Especially with his weakness being his mental state. I think that is what makes him unique; his seemly limitless power, putting him at the top of the Marvel Universe, mingled together with the fragile mind of a drug-addicted average Joe, who looked for a way to get high and accidentally became one of the strongest beings in the Marvel Universe. That is a truly unique story and in my opinion, also unsatisfactory. I mean, the creator of the Sentry compared him to having power levels beyond Cosmic Cube Molecule Man and The Beyonder, actually, almost becoming a god - yet he is so limited by his weak mental condition.

I had a theory that Sentry was Marvel's place holder for Superman. If you remember a few years back, around the time Sentry was introduced, the Siegel family had taken D.C. Comics to court over the rights of Superman and when they won the case, technically could have auctioned off Superman to the highest bidder. Though they ended up signing an agreement with D.C. after the dust settled allowing them to retain the rights of Superman, there was a minute chance that Marvel may have made a play and bid on him which would have been ground breaking to comic history... but didn't happen of course and Marvel could have been banking on it utilizing Sentry as a placeholder and story tie in to introduce Superman into the Marvel Universe with the Sentry's reality altering capabilities. Again, it was just a theory and a bit to ironic how the Sentry's existence during the time frame that the court case for the rights of Superman unfolded... Imagine how mind boggling that would have been!!!

I'm not comparing them in the slightest... I stated a theory for how Marvel could have incorporated Superman into the Marvel Universe if the Siegel case would have gone down the path of his rights going up to the highest bidder after the lawsuit. Theory: A way to write him in would have been to have the Void consume the Kryptonian creating the Sentry. They could have kept Bob Reynolds as a character who broke into the facility where he was exposed to the Super-Soldier Serum and was in fact either a mutant or inhuman who was actually the Void himself and Superman showed up to stop him and the newly awoken Void could have taken it upon himself to seize the powers of Superman by merging himself with the Kryptonian and like in the Marvel Zombies arc, he could have used his strength to punch a hole in reality entering into the 616 Universe where he planted himself as the newly unified Sentry. From there his story as we knew it would have unfolded as such and then after the Seige story arc, having his body tossed into the sun which revived Superman and caused the Void to separate from him. Again, this is just a theory I had; I guess you could call it a fan-fic. I find it too coincidental that the character The Sentry showed up in the Marvel Universe during the time that Superman's legal rights were taken to court by the Siegel family. My theory would be Marvel's way of banking on the possibilities of gaining those rights from the family after the case was over. Ironically after the case was settled and the Siegel family came to an agreement with Time Warner and DC causing Superman to not go up for auction to the highest bidder, Marvel lost interest in the character the Sentry. The Sentry had some amazing showings during the Dark Reign series. The way Osborn controlled and worked with him was legendary. The sentry is a god that controls his own molecules. You pull his arm off he can reattach or regrow it. He’s the void. He’s far superior to Superman. Superman can’t do that shit. You toss Supe into a Sun and he’s gonna burn alive. Molecular Manipulation was a one time thing he used and molecular manipulation is different from reality warping. With molecular manipulation, you can erase some from existence, or make them less of what they are, but they aren’t erased from history. When you reality warp someone, you can change the fabric of reality and keep them from ever existing. Like they won’t ever be born. If someone erased a character molecularly, they would still be remembered and can be brought back by another with the same abilities or reality warping. If you erase a character through reality warping, then they won’t be remembered or capable of bringing back unless through reality warping. The Molecule Man wasn’t able to change history, but characters like The Beyonder, Lucifer Morningstar, Cosmic Armor Superman, can.

Transforming such overpowered characters into a movie sequence is hard and oftentimes fails without a good story behind it. Maybe if they would make a "New Avengers" movie we could see him, however, I still doubt it. You can compare it to Superman. You know, Superman can just fly to Gotham City and beat up all the villains there in 10 minutes. The same would happen to the Sentry. You know he would beat up Thanos. And I mean, The Sentry lifted a Celestial into space. The Sentry beat Cosmic Cube Molecule Man, who was not weakened, as many like to claim. The creator of the Sentry likened his powers to be beyond of the ones from "The Beyonder" and "Molecule Man". Stating he was becoming a god. Well, I hope they make something out of him.

one slight criticism. Thor didn't kill the Sentry by himself by any means. in fact there was a scene where it looked like Sentry was on his way to killing Thor before Osborne called him off to topple Asgard. he was shaking off Thor's biggest Thunderbolts like they were love Taps, and he had wrapped a very terrified looking Thor up in one of his void tentacles when Osborne called off the dogs. his downfall came as the result of several waves of attacks, Loki's magic, and Stark's dropping a nuke in the form of a Helicarrier on top of him. then Thor hit him with one final Thunderbolt while he was in the process of transforming from his ordinary human form to void Sentry.

I believe he is currently dead DEAD in the comics. The deity the created the symbiotes was apparently also the thing that gave the Void its strength or some crap and absorbed the Void then did Mortal Kombat finisher on Reynolds. Everyone waited for Sentry to start the normal the resurrection but nothing happened since as it was stated in the various Sentry mini series - you cant have the Sentry without the Void; they are each one side of the same coin.
