Duncan knows the Thai political scene in Thailand as well as any foreigner. Good interview. Let's see, if Ung Ing can last longer than her predecessor.
She said, " it is time for me to do something for my country and party" So, prior to today, all the things that she had done, in her heart and mind, were not for Thailand... they are for herself and her family. And, she got elected to lead Thailand

Despite her own relative youth it is hard for Ung Ing to develop her own brand among young Thai voters who are smart enough to see that, despite the soothing words, what she actually represents are the vested interests her billionaire father and the bosses of the various factions of the party, who are mainly old style upcountry Thai Chinese gangster politician types involved in commercial exploitation of the indigenous rural populations, not much different from the pro-military politicians they have allied with. How can she compete with the visionary young People's Party politicians who have detailed policies thought out for everything from education to social welfare to decentralisation to economic policy and are not beholden to old style politicians? At the previous budget debate the old style politicians in the Thaksinite cabinet under Srettha had such little understanding of their own ministerial budgets that the opposition MPs had to help them out with the details in the debate.

The downfall of dynastic politics, which is a key feature of the Shinawatra family’s political activities. If Paetongtarn is elected as prime minister, she will be the fourth person from the Shinawatra clan, following Thaksin himself, then Somchai (brother-in-law), Yingluck (younger sister), and Paetongtarn (daughter). This doesn’t even include other members of the clan who have entered politics, such as Jae Daeng, or people like Chaisit, whom Thaksin appointed as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces when he was prime minister. Why is dynastic politics the downfall of democracy? Because family ties are given more importance than actual abilities to perform duties within a democratic system. This blocks opportunities for those outside the family, other members of the party, or ordinary people with high capabilities but not enough power or money. They get sidelined simply because they aren’t part of the family. This monopolization of power fosters authoritarian political behavior because people voting in elections focus not on individual capabilities but on the family’s political influence. So, even if one claims that the people have elected them, it cannot be denied that this nurtures authoritarian behavior, where the choices for voters are predetermined.

@somchai-t7p2 ай бұрын
@@mikolowiskamikolowiska4993 No. Look at what happened with Srettha. This truly marks the end of the Pheu Thai Party. Thaksin’s eagerness to return home led him to make a deal with the royalist faction, thinking that he was important because they supposedly needed him to block the Move Forward Party. Thaksin really overestimated his importance. As it turns out, the royalists don’t give a damn about Thaksin or Pheu Thai. The deal is over. Today, the royalists have taken full control. Not only did they use Thaksin and Pheu Thai to block Move Forward after the election, but they also used the courts to crush Move Forward further, and now they’re using the same courts to take down Srettha. Pheu Thai’s misfortune lies in the betrayal and broken promises of that day, which caused them to lose a lot of their supporters. Now, not only are the party’s and Thaksin’s fates in the hands of the royalists, but the public’s faith in Pheu Thai has also disappeared. Forget about the next election. It’s laughable that Thaksin once aimed for 200 seats. Now, he’s settling for much less. Thinking about a landslide victory is absurd at this point. This is truly a no-win situation. They can’t exit the deal, and even if they could, many supporters wouldn’t back them anymore. This is the true end.

Personally, she has a lot of expectations set before her. Her rise to Premiership was somewhat accidental by nature. She didn’t win the election her self. Given the constitution’s rule, her party submitted 3 Prime Ministerial candidate. She was the runner up after Srettha. Naturally, when he was ousted by the Constitutional court, she became the obvious choice. Although there was a 3rd remaining candidate, but he has too many baggage and the party probably thought it’s going to be troublesome down the line. Although she may not have any political experience, what she has going for her self is a clean slate. Whether that’s true or false the opposition will likely dig into those. Politics is dirty and is a cut throat game. Will she be able to handle the things that will now be targeted at her remains to be seen. Her biggest and most urgent task is how can she solve the household debt and strength of the middle class economy who is the main block of tax income of the country. It is no means an easy feat because her recent predecessor couldn’t even handled it. Though he was only in office for less than a year before leaving. What’s changed now though are gone of the 250 appointed upper house. Who at the general election had power to vote for PM in the parliament. They are no more. So this time, it was the first time that the Parliament was able to elect a PM candidate from MP’s who has gone through the election. The will of the people.
