That Marquinhos take was absolutely terrible. Maguire is just decent from a mediocre bunch. There is nothing outstanding from his game, that makes you go "that guy is a bloody good defender"! NOTHING! No pace, His presence in the opposition box is average, his passing is overrated and average, his composure is lacking. His not a CB that inspires leadership and confidence in the defence. Man has been susepct defensively giving up numerous potential goalscoring opportunities to the opposition, but he somehow doesn't get his mistakes punished, where on any other given day, it would've been capitalized by the opposition attackers. He makes hospital passes that jeopardizes our team on countless occassions. However I do think that our coach fails to hide or cover up the weaknesses of our players, but Maguire as a standalone CB is just at most a decent CB. That's all.

Just so you're aware Marquinhos has only played one full season consistently as a CB (check transfermarkt). Tego's point was comparing the calibre of 'elite' centre backs to the those of a generation and a half ago is pointless because the vast majority are no longer here. You have to accept that the barrier to entry for 'elite' centre backs has shifted from where it was 8-10 years ago has shifted but that is not the likes of Maguire's fault. And if we're honest putting Marquinhos "in the conversation" for elite centre backs Maguire has to be in that conversation. ESPECIALLY when the vast majority of you say the French league is shit but the prem is the best league in the world. And bringing up people like Sergio Ramos who hasn't been at that level since 2017 (at best) is a senseless point.

Matip is a elite defender if you take aside the injuries, he is good in the air, excellent on possession, better than vvd in the opposition box and those runs with the balls are superb, check out his assist against West brom last season for mane - a top midfielder would be proud of the ball he played, this season his preassist for mo salahs goal against Leeds I think was wicked. Matip has even been better than vvd so far for liverpool this season. My top ten in order would be - 1. Vvd 2. Dias 3. Matip 4. Thiago silva 5. Laporte 6. Rudiger 7. Stones 8. Varane 9. Christensen 10. Maguire

You're saying squad player but Silva's been just as good this season as he was last season. His fitness is his only issue at this point which is why Christensen keeps him out but you still see him come in for big games. If he's a squad player he's the best there is.
