I play hazel, I recommend using the fact that changelings are every type and then duplicate the changeling tokens so you get a board of “squirrels” that are bigger and stronger than 1/1

Inspired by your previous squirrel video I am currently building Camellia deck. Only squirrels and food tokens, and you just reasurred me that this is going to be so much fun!!! I was also thinking about voltron deck with all acorn gang, seems like a lot of fun too. Cheers mate

I've been thinking about this topic a lot lately. Imho, the 2 "strongest" Golgari squirrel generals (#1 Chatterfang and #2 Hazel of the Rootbloom) are actually at their strongest when their decks are built to not care about squirrels at all, but simply care about token generation (mostly treasures, let's be honest). This, imho, makes them "weaker" choices for actual squirrel tribal (at least in my mind). I would probably either build around the "weakest", but only "pure" squirrel general instead: The Odd Acorn Gang - or try to lean into the forage/food-subtheme introduced to squirrels with Bloomburrow and build Camellia.

With the odd accorn gang, cammander damage is a real threat. Even if your not going voltron. Make a ton of tokens, tap all them squirrels down and swing with a giant menace trample accorn gang. One shot kills all day. thsts how i built it. Works very well.

Hazel with eldrazi sounds like something fun and unexpected from the table 🤔

Hazel to me is perfect because when your commander isn’t the biggest threat in your deck it makes it easier to develop your commander centric strategies. I only wish that they also let her duplicate foods 2x as well to kinda perfect what she was originally planned for.

I was really hesitating while upgrading the Squirreled Away precon to replace Hazel because I lover her design and she's the intended face commander after all ... but during playtesting it always felt like she was hardly doing anything. I put in several ways to let my creatures and/or tokens tap for mana (Cryptolith Rite, Jaheira, Insidious Roots etc.) which are infinitely better in any way then her ability (which requires her to stick around a turn before you can use it, taps her down, costs life and can only be used for one big mana infusion instead of whenever you need it etc.). So all she was doing was copying 1 token per turn. Compared to Chatterfang who craps out sooo many tokens and is cheaper to cast and has evasion and a sac outlet/removal built in and goes infinite so easy with several token deck staples like Pitiless Plunderer. In the end I even started thinking about cutting her from the 99 lol As you said, I feel like you would need to build an almost entirely new deck around big impactful token copies that she can duplicate instead of just 1 treasure or 2 squirrels per turn.

Camellia cant dodge damage based removal, her ability puts +1 counters only on OTHER squirrels, still my favourite commander, built a deck around foods with her
