Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

Don’t know if you saw but in the trailer, you see the Susan Triad thing, which everyone saw as the Tardis acronym, but we also know that it is triad technologies from the sign on the bus etc, so it is Susan Triad Technologies, which could be shortened to Sue-tech, so it may have a double meaning which is a combination of the Tardis and Sutek as final villains, although I am probably overthinking it and it might be a bit of a stretch lol😂.

If the trickster comes back, I will lose my shit. He is a GOATed villain. How his design is scarier than most if not all Doctor Who villains in a kid's show is beyond me. The fact Russell is doing a lot regarding Pantheon of Discord and the first time being mentioned was that the trickster was one gives me so much hope. The fact they are pushing the butterfly effect as well is all very trickster-esque as well.

He will come back but not now. The toymaker said bigger powers are coming. My theory is Ruby's mother is Skyler and the Trickster want to use Ruby's body. Now we know that not the Trickster is the main enemy in this season but we know that RTD likes to run his stories long. Maybe 1 or 2 seasons later the Trickster is coming back. He is the one who waits. He's always waiting. And he will come back at the end of this Doctor storyline.

I love that he is mentioned but would have loved to see him actually come into the show this season as most people don't even know what she means by this. Hopefully, the trickster is a big part of what Russell is doing in the future, I wish he was front and centre as he was in SJA as the main villain but him being a big part is cool too. Adding him is tricky apart from a mention as his return would be mostly unnoticed by most fans who don't know who he is but for us that know, we would be so hyped. Personally, he is one of the best villains in all the Whoniverse

I may have this wrong. But I'm pretty sure, in the final of (The Sarah Jane Adventures) series 5. Sarah Jane's adopted daughter (Sky) was going to be the Trickster's daughter. But sadly, do to Elisabeth Sladen death, the series had to be shortened. So the Trickster's daughter story line was cancelled. Since RTD was the head writer for the show. Could be probably finish what he started, and have Ruby Sunday be the daughter of the Trickster? The Toymaker and Maestro our members of the Pantheon, and so is the Trickster. It's just wishful thinking. But could the Trickster be the One Who Waits, or be involved somehow?

Another link to Sutekh is that in Pyramids of Mars, The Doctor takes Sarah Jane (along with Laurence Scarman) to see the 1980 that Sutekh would leave if they don't stop him. Which was a scene echoed in The Devil's Chord. The Oldest one could refer to Fenric, as The Seventh Doctor says Fenric emerges from the elemental force of darkness at the beginning of the universe. Fenric also connects with Mel Bush, tangentially. Ace turns out to be one of the Wolves of Fenric. The Doctor meets Ace on Iceworld, which is where Mel leaves the Doctor. This event has to be in the far future, as Mel travels with Glitz, who first appears in The Mysterious Planet, which turns out to be Earth, in the far future. How has Mel gotten back to contemporary Earth? Maybe via a timestorm, created by Fenric, which is the same way that Ace got from 80s Pervivale, to the far future Iceworld.

The "oldest one" is almost certainly the Trickster as his theme played in The Devil's Chord, and there was an unused SJA plot about the Trickster causing Sky to end up with Sarah as a baby and then manipulating events with Sky. He's also part of the Pantheon. However I think the "one who waits" is Sutekh due to "Susan Triad Technologies" shortening down to "Su-Tech" and Ithink Susan Twist's characters are all there watching for Sutekh. Also he'd then be responsible for the sand storm in the finale.

My theory as to who the other Pantheon gods may be: - Sutekh - The God of Death - Fenric - The God of Evil (in fact, Fenric or Sutekh are my top theories for 'The One Who Waits') - The Gods of Ragnarok (also known as the Gods of Entertainment) - The Trickster - The God of Chaos (in fact, it was confirmed he was part of the 'Pantheon of Discord') - Susan Triad - The Goddess of Change - Time (from Flux)/Kronos - The God of... Time - The Beast - The God of Temptation - Ruby's mother (Mrs Flood?) - The Goddess of Memories And my most controversial theory: - The Doctor - The God of Life (it would explain why they could regenerate before the Time Lords and where they came from)

The jarring element is 'The Meep', I wonder if that guides us to the answer. I must confess to having missed these wild speculations. I suspect the Doctor's fear is a clue, too. A Doctor-y version of a spidey-sense, or peter-tingle, that he's vaguely aware that things aren't quite real. Then again it just might be a rights issue. Not necessarily for Gareth Roberts creations, but for the other creatures that deserve to be retired, after a long working life. I really don't want the answer, and love the anticipation...

Interesting that Sutekh and The Beast were voiced by the same actor, Gabriel Wolf, who is still alive. Pyramids of Mars also appeared in the first episode of RTD's Queer As Folk so this 'god' is definitely a favourite of the great man. Coincidentally, Sutekh was also known as the Typhonian Beast.

I don't know if that has been mentioned already, so forgive me if it has.... I think the OIdest One, and the One Who Waits, are separate entities. The main reason I think this, is because Maestro reveals the pronoun He/Him, (what I think) early on in the season, and then the running idea behind Susan Twist, and her portrayal in the series. I think the OIdest one is a reference to a previously seen entity, like The Trickster or Fenric or something. And have the One Who Waits be Susan, due to the LITERAL name that actress has. But it is a stretch... My main idea though, is that the Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death, is a 2 part-er, and we find out that the Doctor either knew for a while, or becomes aware that they are in a TV show. Due to an embodiment of Russell T or someone, acting as a member of the Pantheon of Chaos. Basically a being able to control the 'show' that The Doctor is in. Cheers for coming to my Ted Talk! XD

It could make sense if the oldest one was the Master Brain from the Mind Robber, the Doctor seems to be in a TV show or something which wouldn't make much sense with the others but the Master Brain's whole thing is that he traps you in a fantasy world just like what the Doctor seems to be in. At a stretch, the Trickster could probably make a strange timeline like this for the Doctor to fall in but I don't see Sutekh or the Beast doing this.

We have seen the toymaker and maestro but the oldest member of their family is HECUBA the immortal one who waits to exact her revenge on the doctor. All the triangles seen in the series plus the word triad suggest a connection to the number 3 and we've only had 2 of the toymakers family so far.

I can't help but wonder if despite Russell's assurances it all began at the Bigeneration. That was dismissed as mythical or legendary, and quickly dropped. I truly hope this twist pays off. I'm not sure the franchise could survive another rug pull of a misdirect like the timeless child, and it's refusal to deliver on all the teases!

Completely off base theory here, but…what if the Doctor and the Beast are two sides of the same coin? Since the Timeless Child, we don’t really know who/what the being now known as the Doctor was. Like the Valeyard, there could have been an “evil twin” , so to speak, of the Doctor. In “Time of the Doctor”, the Great Intelligence mentions several names for the Doctor, including the Beast and the Valeyard. No evidence for this was evident in “The Impossible Planet”, but it may be a retcon of sorts. Further, Susan Twist / Mrs. Merridew might be Susan Foreman, shadowing the Doctor until the The One Who Waits appears and she can come to his aid. I was never clear as to how the moniker “The Beast” began to be associated with the Doctor, but, yeah, far out theory that probably won’t pan out…in our universe, at least. Or, more likely, I need to step away from the Delta 9 Jelly Babies for a bit.

Honestly, I don't think it's a returning character. The main clues we have so far is that it is NOT one of the beings that entered the universe with the Toymaker, and it's something significantly more powerful than any god. Also, Maestro calls him "the Lord Temporal" as though this is an ancient myth about the Toymaker passed down to him, which kinda makes sense given that they're all kinda beyond time.

From what we get in the latest episode Sutekh. At least in the post Flux timeline, the pre flux timeline could differ drastically. Sutekh is the oldest, after him followed mother and father, followed by the rest of the pantheon.

Before I said it was Omega, but I’ve changed my mind, I think it’s Susan, who’s got up to… a lot of stuff in the meantime. I also think perhaps she’s Ruby’s mom which would make Ruby the doctors great-granddaughter. Here’s my rationale: 1. The Doctor has gone from not mentioning her once in the classic series to mentioning her twice in two episodes (albeit indirectly with the Doctor citing himself as a “dad” in boom) seems intentional to me. I don’t think that’s just dropping offhand weird lore for a quirky reference, I think that’s making sure viewers know this key point for the storyline. 2. The First Doctor left her in London without really considering it very hard and just left. By Time Lord standards Susan was still practically a baby, and he just kind of ditched her. Sound familiar to any themes explored this season? We have no idea how this panned out for her, but I think it would be quite reasonable for her to not have just grown old there and possibly harbored great resentment towards the doctor for leaving her there, and when you give a very resentful time lord a LOT of time… and we’ve gotten no return from the og actress except that she’d be interested in returning… 3. The recurring cameo actress is “Susan Twist,” and… how did the song from the end of Devil’s Chord go again?

One thing I really like about the Toymaker & Maestro, - that would be undone whenever/if a mysterious pantheon leader is revealed as a pre-exisiting villian, - is that despite being called "gods", they don't fit the traditional 'gods' archetype of previously being worshiped/reveared in human history. (Which I'm kinda tired of now, after Marvel and many other IPs constantly using this "mythology but actually real alien that humans worshipped" idea). But I think makes total sense with them being from beyond this universe, and only recently breaking in. Like the 'not things', they are more conceptual in all aspects, (which I think it makes perfect sense for things like Maestro's gender, etc). They are more akin to higher dimensions beings that we are only perciving in our 3 dimensions.

Whatever happens, I think it's going to be one of the greatest storylines of Doctor Who - but it's not going to have the effect that it should, or the respect it deserves, mainly due to social media. It happens way too often now that people find films and series 'shit' or 'disappointing' or 'underwhelming', and its usually because everyone has either figured it out early through social media or got their hopes up expecting something better.

However, I think this is leading to the Pantheon featuring the Toymaker's legions and other god-level entities toying with the Doctor in each episode, before we discover the whole series has been manufactured (in a modern way) by the Gods of Ragnarok for their own entertainment - having used the reset following the Goblin episode to transport the characters into a pocket universe, similar to the 'Land of Fiction'. I think we'll also discover that Ruby is either a daughter of the Toymaker (the cloaked woman being the Toymaker's wife), or a member of his newly-learned species (using chameleon arch technology, which is why the Tardis DNA scans show her as a human, but the Doctor isn't convinced). I would personally enjoy the cloaked woman to be The Rani (interesting they received a name drop in the first episode), being a rogue Time Lord she could've learned about their true origins and taken the time to look deeper, eventually placing Ruby at the Church on Ruby Road in order to push the Doctor towards discovering more about themselves.

I read on DS there's some issue with The Rani being used as they are not quite sure who owns the rights. But given the extra money Disney has brought in must only be a matter of time before she returns. I really hope it's someone totally new and wont be killed off There's still the issue of rassilon he's still out there. So technically the Doctor isn't the last In the Trailer they put bounty hunter so someone wants the doctor. RTD did say the TARDIS acting odd will be part of the bigger reveal.

I definitely think it’s The Beast returning, too many reference to the devil they even went back to the year 1666 recently, also among that group The Beast is most certainly the “Oldest One” Amazing season so far. Ruby might even be the daughter of the beast. Also random thought imagine The Doctor was part of the original group that imprisoned The Beast but forgot :O

FIRST MISTAKE everyone seems to be making is that THE OLDEST AND FIRST plus THE ONE WHO WAITS are the same entity. THEY ARE NOT AT ALL as Maestro seems to fear one and be working with THE ONE WHO WAITS. Waiting implies an END or OMEGA. Logically that implies a START or ALPHA. THIS may be a new character or more likely I'm completely wrong. Anyway I think they are opposed to each other. THE DOCTOR will tell them both where to go like SHERIDAN does in BABYLON 5 to all the old GODS. RUBY SUNDAY is RIVER SONG reborn from the library computer by her overflow/offspring daughter MRS FLOOD. I might be wrong there or giving RTD clues !!!
