WHO is The Red Engine? (& How I Made Eagle!)

Slight correction to the video: I largely forgot to mention timeline which confirms The Red Engine isn’t James (being that the story takes place in 1922, James doesn’t arrive until 1925) in canon. It’s much more likely this is meant to be a random engine. Plus James was black upon his arrival so to call it James isn’t the most correct going by direct RWS lore- 😅 Seeing as he was used as a reference though it’s not the most wrong either, and that’s the fun or dilemma of it all. I believe this comes down largely to Dalby or illustrators being rushed or not taking proper care; and thank gosh they did because I think it’s more fun this way.

If I remember correctly in awdry's original sketchs it appeared to be Edward trying to push Henry out of the tunnel, then in the original Middleton illustrations, it seems to be the same engine as the one in the shed, than in the spong illustrations he drew james not knowing the timeline and didn't care so awdry had to explain it away saying it wasn't James, then in the tv series they used thomas, than finely in the adventure begins special they just used james in his original black paint job. History of the engines they tried to push Henry out of the tunnel is odd

I think the main reason we generally say the red engine in The Sad Story Of Henry isn’t James is because according to Thomas & James’ books, he had his iconic crash on his first day and was painted black. The sad story of Henry is too early for him to be there and he’s in the wrong color, so although I’m sure the artist used to James as a reference canonically it has to be someone else

That's a nice Eagle custom! Using a paperclip for reversing gear is kinda genius. On the topic of an engine pushing Henry out of his tunnel, Wilbert's origianl sketches show Edward (or another 4-4-0) trying to push the train. Then, William Middleton and Dalby come along, and misinterpret said sketches like a bad game of telephone.

A simple, but very nice and detailed custom. Me personally I've always called the red engine Eagle. I don't know I just like it. It was also the first 'fan interpretation' of a one off character who we never see again I ever saw back in the early days of KZbin and this was before Wildnorwester's interpretation in the form of Winston.

The use of an Ivo Hugh faces makes your spin on him that more unique and also emphasizes the RWS-ness of the modela nd character. Great work!

Genuinely the most peak model of him i’ve ever seen, when i saw the thumbnail i thought he he was OO at first, that’s how clean this thing is. And even with the copper dome you can always just say Eagle is based on a Furness Railway D5 (Looks uncannily similar to L&YR class 28, plus they were FR red with copper domes)

I like "The Red Engine" as a fan creation. James is numbered #5. This engine carries no number. The Rev. Awdry stated there are a lot more engines that work on Sodor than the characters mentioned in the stories so it makes perfect sense for The Red Engine to be one of these and expands sodor while keeping true to cannon. We love to see it. Great video.

I like all the subtle differences on this model, like the 0-6-0 configuration and combination of red engine wheels and black tender wheels. Though it's worth noting that illustration isn't just an incorrectly drawn James, it's a red engine from the first book - James' canonical first day was in the second book

I read the book several times when I was little, and despite my keen eye for detail I never realised that the “James” illustration was off. The red wheels and dome should’ve been a dead giveaway. It’s quite amusing that people turned this botched illustration into a fan character.
