I watched the Celestial Toymaker as a 10 year old, scared the life out of me. Michael Gough saying "make your move, Doctor. Make your last move". Only Gough could deliver that line in quite that chilling way. Still remember it 57 years later. NPH has a huge burden, living up to that. Gough was hugely underrated, playing, among scores of great performances, both the Toymaker and Alfred Pennyworth and making those polar opposite roles equally convincing and memorable. So memorable that a character he created 57 years ago is being revived for the 60th anniversary

The Toymaker is Q meets Mister Mxyzptlk. He has the near limitless power of both. He has Q's genius. He has Mxyzptlk's obsessive focus on the one who's defeated him. Much like Mxyzptlk is bound to the ability to banish him by getting him to say his own name backwards, Toymaker is bound by the rules of games, he can't cheat and has to play fairly. He's also got the quirkiness of Mister Mxyzptlk but tempered with the gravitas and almost regal sense of knowing he's the most powerful being in the room of Q.

The Toymaker is the banished previous Whoniverse rulers over time leader. = This Celestial Toymaker should/could be the ascended Rassilon that wants to stear/push the classic Whoniverse mankind (now inside the new Whoniverse since end of episode Journeys end) in a certain direction (so we will become the new whoniverse rulers over time and as such protect his ascention at the end of the timewar in the classic WhHoniverse. (As events inside the new Whoniverse caused the end of the timewar inside the classic Whoniverse). In the classic Whoniverse the Toymaker came from Rassilons original people that ruled over time in the whoniveerse before the classic Whoniverse (the whoniverse where Jackie and Rose ended up in)

And as Gallifrey was taken into the void just as they ascended it stands to reason why the guardians over time resides within the void. AND we saw the white guardian (for the new Whoniverse) in End of time both parts (as the White Guardian ascended alongside with Rassilon = the White guardian was guarding its (and its child) ascentions (the child being the Black guardian over time (for the new WHoniverse) = the Timelords got split up into two opposing factions at the end of the timewar; because 1 group was fully ascended because they where closer to Rassilons "ascention device" (aka the Key to time for the new WHoniverse) as it split up the Timelords into two opposing factions as Gallifrey got not just frozen in that last moment, it also got burnt/ascended/terraformed. /this is what turned Gallifrey into Akhaten as it exted the void in end of Twice upon a time (and killed the TARDIS) as the "ascention wave" hit the TARDIS shortly after it exited the void with Gallifrey in tow; (this was the reason the TARDIS threw out JW (to save her and the Earth theTARDIS had exited nearby. (from the ascention wave) And as i mentioned there was an 2nd group of the Timelords. Those that got frozen mid ascention as Gallifrey got frozen in that moment thus trapping everyone outside the Gallifreyan high counsil in an Quantum locked Schrödingers cat like state of both being ascended and alive at the same time, Wink wink, do not blink... =Akhaten became Ghost monument world and Ghost monument world became Bysantium crash planet and Bysantium crash planet became Trenzalore. AND!. As the Doctor, the Pandorica and the TARDIS created the new Whoniverse... That means.. The Father, child and the Holy ghost monument...... And that means our now former Doctor will give birth to a female virgin birthed child (pos Jenny pos a another virgin birthed child) that will become the pilot mind for the Pandorica, and that means... The TARDIS corpse remains on Gallifrey/Trenzalore.... Very interesting summary of the extended story. I vividly recall watching the original story on TV, and being terrified that they would choose the "wrong" Tardis. One of the games involved choosing the real Tardis from a set of replicas, with the only clue being that their dimensional ratio's were slightly off! I always thought that the show missed an opportunity to reintroduce the Toymaker during Pertwee's run, and again during Mcoy's tenure. There may be more but these are the two that struck me at the time. Firstly the main villain in Carnival of Monsters, portrayed as a bumbling showman, could easily have been slightly reworked to be a manifestation of the Toymaker, with his malfunctioning machine holding the monsters being revealed as one of his collapsing Toyrooms. Secondly in the Circus in Greatest Show in the Galaxy the plot could easily have been tweaked to reveal a link between the God's of Ragnarok and the Toymaker, but these are both roads not taken so l look forward to this long overdue reappearance.

This is well done, and ordered. I've consumed as a consumer all those stories mentioned except the comic, but I didn't know the order from the Toymaker's perspective. I also don't remember the Magic Mousetrap, though I know I have it, I'll have to relisten. The story that I love most is Divided Loyalties. My asbsolute dream would be a flashback scene with someone playing a young Hartnell with Rallon and Millenia meeting him as Tennant narrates to Donna their first meeting.

60’s era vs modern day era. People must remember that it’s a different time. The costume wouldn’t have been seen as ‘racist’ back then. People are way too apologetic for the past. The one issue I have after reading her essay is them saying that using the “N” word in there is a common American version of the children’s “Eenie meanie minney moe.” I am American and I was born in 1971 and have never heard that version until this discussion about it and a clip from the car guy using it. (Can’t think of his name or the show sorry) I have a vague memory or hearing that that was an old version but I would guess it wasn’t used in the US since maybe the 50’s except maybe in the south. I was raised in California which tends to be more progressive. Anyway I have also never heard of celestial being a racial slur either. I’m not saying these things don’t exist. I’m just saying I wouldn’t consider them common.

I was born in 1976 in Australia and I've heard Americans saying the n-word in the eenie-meanie rhyme, both in real life and on tv. Have you been deliberately trying to not notice the n-word your entire life or something? As to the word Celestial, it's a racial slur of Californian origin, your home state invented it! Back when the Chinese were coming to America before the Chinese Exclusion Act, they called their homeland "The Celestial Empire", and Californians quickly took to referring to all Asian people as "Celestials". Honestly, it was only in heavy use in California, and a bit in the UK. Fallen out of style now, but in the 1960s older people were still using it and there were still businesses that used the word in their names. "Common" is an interesting question here. Californians have probably made more progress than most American states, it's true, but racial slurs are still common today even in California. If you don't notice them I'd say that's more to do with you choosing to not notice it that them not being used.

I am in no way trying not to hear it. We always said tiger as a child and everyone I ever heard said tiger. You know, i am noticing similarities between the Toymaker and other entities in scifi. The Q from Star Trek, the Beyonders from Marvel, Mr. Mxyzptlk from DC Comics, exc. Interesting though, with a multiverse involved in many of them that the Toymaker has just been having fun in other universes. Different names and faces, but him non the less.

It is possible. There's another KZbin video about Mr. Mxyzptlk (MM) that provides evidence that MM is the same person in every appearance, and may also be The Impossible Man at Marvel Comics. To me, MM and The Toymaker are very similar. Mr. Mxyzptlk has unlimited power to do anything he wants. His only limitations is the ones he places on himself, and he always lives up to his word.

I hope they don't screw him up. The Celestial Toymaker is my favourite from Doctor Who. Pls don't shovel LGBTQ nonsense into it. Jodie's series failed because of it. Personally though, I don't see the original toymaker outfit as racist. I just see an Alien being seeing an earthly outfit, and wearing it simply because he likes the look. (The Doctor does the same. Which is why some of his outfits look very garish. Like John Pertwee or Colin Baker for example.) If we constantly worry about people becoming offended about something so little like an outfit, then how can we ever progress. You need to take risks sometimes to create great things.

Tardis Central should be aware that the source you used to side-step (but at least you mentioned it) the controversy about the original character has SPECIFICALLY ASKED NOT TO BE CITED because it's an 11 year-old article and the author doesn't want a bunch of people jumping down her throat about "woke mind virus" BS (my words not hers). But I'm glad the controversy was mentioned here. You don't have to let the problematic first version ruin it for you if you're the kind of fan who gets excited about old character returning, but it's amazing how many "explained"/"lore" videos are out there right now that just ignore it completely. Not to mention comment sections full of people who don't know anything about it and just want anyone who points any of it out to have their voice taken away ala the Doctor in the original story.

I have a theory that the Toymaker is a Timelord,as not only did they find his name in a Timelord database,but he has also changed his appearance each time he is seen,and so has his outfit,just like the Doctor,he also has a contained universe he presides in and controls,which indicates that it can be driven and controlled(like a TARDIS anybody?),and most of all like a TARDIS can be destroyed,yet this itself does not destroy its inhabitant(s),I think it’s too many coincidences to be coincidental at all.

Why would you expect a bad guy in a TV show to be politically correct? You'd expect them to be racist like the Master was in sound of the drum's (towards humans). It makes them a better vilian if you hate them more. John Sims master would probably mention 15 being of different colour.
