1:49 Correction: I've been informed that the RetroTINK 2X can also accept S-video input from N64, but I don't have any S-video cables on-hand to add that option to this comparison. Might eventually have to revisit the HD daisy chain down the road with more options! 😉 Cheers.

Kind of an unfair comparison, since most reviewers seem to agree that the the Retrotink with S-Video generates fairly similar results to the Eon (which is also more expensive and less versatile compared to the Retrotink). I'm also surprised you'd buy a Retrotink and not know to use the S-Video input, that seems like a huge oversight if you were interested enough to spend that much money to improve the image quality in the first place.

I wish we got a side-by-side of Slick Mode with and without the mClassic. ALSO, IMO, the Slick Mode+mClassic combination works WONDERS for polygons and CERTAIN UI elements, but IMO for some text and textures, the smoothing algorithm might be a SMIDGE too aggressive and it can almost look like the edges were "smeared" rather than smoothed, giving an almost painted look. The best showing of this is the comparison highlight reel near the end of the video, the Nintendo copyright on the Zelda title screen, and all the text in the StarFox section.

@fluffisaurus7090
@fluffisaurus7090 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately Eon has marketed this product as the best you can get and many people have fallen into that trap. Most “reviews” of this product are blatant ads, the only actual review I’ve seen is Digital Foundry’s. Plus the Retrotink 5x makes composite video look better than this adapter due to its amazing composite comb filter.
@FreakinSweet1987
@FreakinSweet1987 2 жыл бұрын
@@fluffisaurus7090 The only reason you consider the Digital Foundry video more legitimate is because they had more criticisms than other videos. If you look at comparisons like John Hancock did, you'll see that the Super 64 is essentially the best middle ground between a lower end device and the HDMI mod in terms of both colors and picture quality. It does a better job at upscaling, and without input lag on top of it. It's important to remember that Digital Foundry is constantly exposed to differing levels of video quality across dozens of platforms. It's natural they won't be impressed by something so standard. But the average consumer will likely be blown away by the difference.

Thank you for showing this. The N64 is one of my favorite consoles of all time, and I had almost given up hope playing mine on my TV since I'm not willing to spend $400 on a modded console, or carefully look for a working official S-video cable to use in conjunction with my Retrotink. While the Super 64-mClassic combo is still pricy. I'm still willing to spend my money for the convenience of it.

You could buy a RetroTiNK 2x and a custom S-video cable, and you'd be getting just as good of a picture while saving at least $30. Not only can you use the RetroTiNK 2x with the N64 but you can also use it with other systems as well. The EON is still only using the S-video signal.

@@ians_parks - RAD2X is great - I own one and use it on my Modded N64. I would not use the RAD2X on a stock console. You have to have an RGB Modded N64 to get the best out of the RAD2X. - If you use it on a stock N64 you only get upsampled Composite video. I do not know why Mike Chi did not implement S-Video into the circuitry ( The Retrotink can pull S-video and the RAD2X is based on same tech - so why was it left out? ) The EON Super64 is the best solution for a stock NTSC N64.

@@albey1816 Mike Chi most likely left it out to keep the cost down. Also i could never justify nor recommend spending $150 on an adapter that only works on the n64 and only draws svideo. I just got both! I love them. Yes, it was expensive, but it's worth it! I have my 64 on a projector that puts out a screen size of around 108". On the original cables it's horrible. Made me not even want to play. Using a cheap HDMI adapter isn't much of an improvement. With both plugged in (I have the m-classic plugged into the output of my receiver going to my projector so all my systems go through it) the picture looks amazing especially at that large of a size! I feel content with the purchase because it makes me feel satisfied that I am playing at the best possible visual option and not just "rigging it up " to work through HDMI.

I think the solution here is obvious given the weird video output of NTSC N64. S-Video is the best native signal you can get without mods, and unlike other consoles, the upgrade to RGB is pretty much indistinguishable, and few solutions tap and handle S-Video well like this does GC is a whole other rabbit hole though and has far wider color variation among the different (and all imperfect) alternatives to the OEM cable's DAC

If you are person considering buying this, consider buying an HDMI premodded N64 for a $100 more. The digital-to-digital picture, plus anti-aliasing, is currently the best way to look at N64 games. But consider that your old C.R.T. that you use hook up your N64, will not have input lag, so weigh in your decision. An RGBs mod with anti-aliasing, using the appropriate cables, or RGBs to component cables, on a vintage C.R.T. may be the best choice, if you are not video capturing your gameplay.

If they could get the price down I bet they'd have the market locked down for n64 HDMI adapters.

I thought the issues were just that we are using new-age widescreen 16:9 tvs, when the N64 was designed for old 4:3 CRT styles. This super EON 64 doesnt do anything with the aspect ratio but just smoothes things out then?
@ians_parks
@ians_parks 4 жыл бұрын
This retains the 4:3 aspect ratio and doesnt stretch the image. Its also linedoubling 240p to 480p so that its more widely compatible with modern displays. It linedoubling ensures that it remains lag free unlike upscaling which introduces potential lag. Basically its a lagfree solution for modern displays that tries to somewhat clean up the image. Still its stupidly overpriced for what it offers.

Good video I know very little about the accessories and how they can transform the gaming video quality but are there specifically hardware that one can plug into a HD TV USB or HDMI port to make the picture just as good without plugging it into the console? With a high quality dongle you can take your game add it as a rom with a emulator and play it off the tv. I just would like that video to be as sharp as possible.

Stacking about $250 worth of electronics in a long double dongle stack seems dicey to me. Good enough to do a review I guess. Still shows some odd effects. I don't get the complaints about the prices, I understand it's a lot of money but these are largely niche products serving a pretty small enthusiast market. Not a lot going on to get economies of scale you're used to. I still think the UltraHDMI is the way to go if you're really that into the N64 platform and can't spare the room for an old CRT. And good CRTs are getting hard to find anyway.

I have no idea what utterly sh*tty system and connection you normally use but my N64 games connected up via SCART [in the UK] to my SD Sony Trinitron CRT TV looked basically like the stuff you have achieved after the update. Edit: I think it was actually S-Video I had my N64 connected up via. But my point was that it looked better than most of the footage I see of standard N64 games on KZbin.

n64 scart is composite video scart and not rgb scart
@inceptional
@inceptional 3 жыл бұрын
@@gamecubeplayer I'm pretty sure in the UK it was RGB SCART that I used for all my consoles, but I can't really recall. I thought some plugged straight in as SCART and others I had to plug the Red/White/Yellow connections into a SCART and the plug that in. Or maybe I was connnecting the N64 via S-Video. Something like that. But, either way, it looked great, and much better than composite.

@@gamecubeplayer Then I'm probably not recalling the connection I used for the N64 correctly. I did also have the likes of a SNES, GC, Xbox and Wii connected up to my TV too, so maybe I used the SCART for those other system. But the main point was my games looked great.

So question. If you have a RGB modded N64, would you get the enhancements from that outputted through this thing? Or do I need to keep searching for a framemeister.to defeat the checkerboard issue?

Helge Frisenette Nope. N64 already has a pretty bad frame rate (24 FPS for Zelda), but the EON and M-Cable are both less than 1ms it lag each. But when capturing HDMI footage at 60fps for KZbin, that native lag can be pretty apparent.

It does marginally improve the graphical quality but the price range of $150 - $240 is steeper than the Trango Towers. You can buy 2 Nintendo 64s, 5 controllers, a transfer pak, and 6 Nintendo 64 titles for $50 less than $150. I know because I've done this before. $240 is only $60 away from a brand new Nintendo Switch. Hell, you can buy the portable switch when it comes out and a brand new copy of Hyrule Warriors for $240. This price point is legitimately exorbitant for what is essentially a Nintendo 64 external modification. Unfortunate. It'll be nice when the cost of manufacture for this kind of device falls below the $100 price point because anything above that is for only your most dedicated hobbyist with plenty of money to blow.
