This version of Sandy Denny's classic 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' was recorded in the early 90s as an extra tracks to an e.p. that was released in Germany. It was recorded at Fairview Studios, Hull at the same time as my 3rd album 'Beating The Drum'.
I've been trying to remember when I first heard of Sandy Denny. When I left school at the age of 18, I briefly attended university at Worcester and it was there I met fellow student Robin Shepherd (now known as actor Robin Kingsland). He asked me if I had heard Sandy's music and proceeded to play me 'The North Star Grassman and the Ravens', Sandy's 1st album from 1971. He then told me that she had left this world too soon but had left an intriguing body of work.
I have to say I was perplexed that I had never before heard such a beguiling voice and style and over the next few years filled my ears with as much Sandy as I could.
The most well known version of 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' is probably Judy Collins' and it gave her the title of her 6th album.
Sandy's version with Fairport Convention is probably my favourite but I wanted to give it more of a 'dance' vibe - well, you can sway to it !
I was honoured to be asked to sing Sandy's songs when Jerry Donahue reformed 'Fotheringay' in 2015 and again when a plaque was unveiled at Byfield Village Hall to commemorate the last concert Sandy played in the village of Byfield, Northants where she had lived with Trevor and baby Georgia. My friends and I now perform as the Sandy Denny Project there in April every year at what we call 'SandyFest'. I also sing Sandy's songs alongside those of Joni Mitchell in my solo show 'Joni, Sandy & me' where I talk of both Sandy and Joni, their song writing styles and their influence on my own songs.
The photos and videos are mostly of my sons, Dillon and Ben with a few of me (mostly appearing with Fairport Convention at their annual festival at Cropredy village in Oxfordshire).
My memories of being a mum are filled with joy and I hope the video for this song reflects this.
All with love xxx
