You learn of Afton robotics during the beginning of Sister Location (if not then, then some point I just know it’s in that game)

For the question of what's his fear I would've said himself. For the reason that he hurt people and by the looks of it he's ashamed of it. So he's worried that even without Vincent there to provoke him that he'll hurt someone he loves. And he's scared that could happen and evidently hes scared of himself.
