In this video I take multiple different brands of 350 Chevy oil filters. I didn’t cut them open and take a look at what’s inside of the different filtration elements and gaskets and material make up. Comment down below which one you use and what oil filter is your favorite.

Always run NAPA-Wix filters. The quality control out of Wix Platinum filters is solid. The pleats are thicker & sewn into an internal metal wire mesh that helps the filter media hold up after long periods of hard driving at high oil pressures. They're rated for 10,000 miles but I always change mine every 6k per vehicle manual.

Fram Ultra synthetic is just as good. Buy a cheap filter and it’s going to be cheap, all brands make garbage to compete with each other’s garbage and they make premium ones. You reach diminishing returns eventually with the premium filters.

Been using Napa Gold (made by Wix) for over 15 years, with Purolator Pure One as my backup. Used to use Fram until I cut one open after taking it off my car. The filter media had completely separated from the fiber end caps in two spots, and there was a hole where the seams weren’t joined together properly! The filter offered absolutely zero protection! Back then the seam was pieced together with a metal clip, but I believe that they just use glue now on the cheaper filters.

I crushed a Fram with a standard metal strap type trying to get it off. Always lubed the gasket and never went further than my hand could tighten the filter when its new, so I dont know why it got stuck. 100%; oil filters are commodities. Fram is the OEM for Subaru "blue" and Honda. Differences between designs may matter if you push each filter to the edge of their operating ability, but If you follow your OE recommended change intervals you will be fine. I enjoyed the video and it brings up a great conversation around this topic - how do you define the "best": I would argue that the best is the one that does the job without waste. If the O ring is thicker, is that better? Did the thinner one leak? If not, then it's not actually objectively better.

80 to 90 percent of engine wear occurs at startup. So, flow is just as important as micron size. Pushing for a lower micron size requires more restrictive medium thus reducing flow..A white blood cell is 25 micron. Your engine, you be the judge.

Forgot Fram Ultra, prices are also all over the place, don't get me wrong not a fan of the orange can of death but besides the Microgard all of these are not only significantly better but cost significantly more. I think the general consensus is every company can make a good product, the debated question is who makes the best product at a certain price. In defense of the orange can of death end caps don't matter all of that much from a manufacturer/engineer point of view. People meme it saying the end cap is cardboard but it's not, any non synthetic filter will have some cellulose in it, but cellulose will fail across the board at a certain PSI. The end cap does have some fiberglass in it but it's also rated above in PSI, so if the conditions are right for the end cap to fail, than the conditions are also right for the filter media to fail as well. That's kinda why end caps material doesn't matter, the filter media will always be the weakest point on a filter, so it will be the first to fail regardless of end cap design. I will say thought, metal does look nicer, and it will cost more, the cheaper end cap will not compromise the filter, as it's more durable. Filters are not that restrictive though, so the pressure on end caps is minimal, I think most consumer oil pumps are rated for 2 gallons per min, most oil filters can easily filter 15 gals per min, so the filter isn't a pressure point.

That’s a great question. You need to contact a business that analyzes oil samples for metal. They can analyze for many different types of metal and amount. You need several engines with similar mileage and replace the oil with new oil, same type for each engine that has been previously analyzed. Then run the engines for the same amount of time and distance. Then compare the before and after metal content for each engine. Then repeat the process but putting on a different filter on each engine again with new analyzed engine oil. You could use one engine but if your testing a lot of filters you could cut your testing time. The engine oil analysts can determine which oil filter traps the most metal particles.
@johnniewilliams5214
@johnniewilliams5214 3 жыл бұрын
It would also be good to run a control on each engine by not putting on a filter but using a hollowed out filter to compare each control with the filtered oil.
