Ommegang Witte and Unibroue Blanche de Chambly are both excellent examples of this style as well. I don't think either is as good as Allagash White but they are pretty close

Allagash is a very good representation of the style. Dogfish Head Nameste white is outstanding as well.
@ValerioMascolinoАй бұрын
Used to live in DC when Dogfish first came out with Namaste, and I fell in LOVE with it, for a while I'd find it in any random liquor store. I moved to Chicago 3 years ago and I can't find it anywhere here, unfortunately.

Cool video! Would like to see how some of the commonly imported white ales compare -- Einstok's white ale from Iceland, Kronenbourg Blanc -- next to maybe a white ale actually brewed in Belgium, and perhaps a local craft brewery's rendition of the style?

The non-Allagash beers were probably darker from using higher protein 2-row (probably with a wider color spec than a Pilsner malt) and wheat malts. Nate even called the Blue Moon “meaty”, that’s the Maillard reaction right there.

Allagash is my pick, hands down.

Love Hitachino White. Could also include Avery's White Rascal. But tbh I still think Allagash clears both of those, it's really just that good for me.

Hell yeah, my favorite crushable beer style. Now I'm thirsty and it's not even 9am yet. My all-time favorite white ale I've had is Tired Hands Brewing Barrel Aged Antenna. I want to see more breweries aging their witbier, because Barrel Aged Antenna is aged in French oak red wine barrels for 6 months with Brettanomyces added. It ends up being so yeasty, juicy, and tart. The most thirst-quenching beer I've ever had.

ooooh ! Part One 1 of your White Ale reviews .... 😛[ I started at Pt. 2, but had to search for Pt 1]. I'll have to try Allagash again .. and see your Pt. 2 review. Drinkability ? Crushable ? I think I'd prefer a Miller Lite for that ! Malt flavored water with a bit of bitter ... I understand that as a Brewer you want to sell (good) volume, but maybe as an (older) consumer, I'd like to drink less (but tasty) beers (more filing!). Trying Shock Top now .. now really impressive to me, maybe like a Widmer Brewing Hefeweizen (Portland, OR)(but also ABinBev) but probably prefer the Widmer. Maybe a NW bias ... as opposed to a Midwest (AB) mentality 😜.
@mapex311Ай бұрын
Very surprised with UFO white, that's my go to beach beer. Would choose that over shock top any day. Agree with blue moon. I'll drink it, but it's basically juice.

Interesting reading that pre-50’s witbiers were lacto sour. The canned mixed ferm beers from Tree House were interesting/good. I wonder if we’ll see more of those one day.

I used to drink UFO a lot 10-15 years ago (I moved out of Harpoon’s distribution area). I could have faulty memory, but I remember it being almost as pale as a Hoegaarden. I wonder if the recipe changed or there was a condition issue with that bottle or if I couldn’t see colors in Texas?

Sorry to be that guy, but, for clarification, as this video will confuse people, there are no styles called White Ale. There are two categories here: 1. Belgian Wit (in the category of Belgian Ale) 2. White IPA: made with Belgian yeast (in the category of IPA)

I would only consider Allagash White as the true expression of a Belgian white ale (BJCP 21.24a Witbier, even used as an example beer) and better tested against a panel with something like Hoegaarden Wit. While labeled similarly, the rest are really just American interpretations of this original style. Not that they can't be good, they are just a different category (BJCP 21.1D, don't _usually_ get clove from these) and should be treated as such.
