Genesis contains two accounts of Beersheba being named, and skeptics claim they both cannot be true. We address this concern in this video.

This was great! It seems to me less of a contradiction and more like people just not reading for context. The chronological timeline you presented was a super helpful visual representation, thanks IP!

I’ve found the vast majority of supposed contradictions in the Bible are from reading without context. Nothing more cringe than a non-believer quoting a one off Bible verse as a gotcha when the answer to their contradiction or issue is in the same passage haha

I faced a similar situation on Twitter this morning. Somebody replied to a comment I made, asking how I explain a particular verse. After I looked it up, I told them to keep reading the chapter.

Nicely unpacked. I never saw these twin stories as duplicates. Rather, it seemed to me that the oath Isaac swore with Abimelech was a continuation of the narrative of Abimelech's encounter with Abraham.

Sometimes things don't seem to make immediate sense to me, particularly when I am not greatly familiar with them. But its a mistake to think that it must be because the thing has an error in it. Hope that some of the "higher critics" might someday share my realization.
@ALavaPenguin
@ALavaPenguin 5 ай бұрын
Some of these criticisms i think are just willfully stupid going out of their way to understand how things are named. Take for example my dog. I have told people both that "I named my dog for reason X", and also I have told people "it was my sister who named my dog for reason y". Neither of these statements contradict despite being different people naming her and for different reasons. For my dog example [and no this isn't supposed to be a 1 to 1 analogy with the Beersheba thing]....I brought home my dog as a puppy and my sister was there. I had not decided on a name. It was my puppy, but I was open to suggestions. My sister and I discussed names and for reason Y my sister came up with the name she eventually got. I liked the name for reason X, a separate reason from my sister, and decided with my authority of it being my dog I would "name her" that. So yes, the person who named my dog was my sister specifically but also me and it was for both reason X but also for reason Y separately. It makes total sense in how people naturally speak and how things actually happen in history, yet if I were to tell a bible skeptic this dog naming scenario was in scripture they would suddenly get ridiculous blinders on and call it some crazy contradiction and must be false and not even try and see how actually it quite naturally all goes together.... THEN you could even add another wrinkle. I could even casually and honestly say to someone my Mother named my dog because guess what I didn't tell you she also was there and she was part of the dog naming process and while her names didn't get picked nor did she have the final authority in naming it, she also was part of the process and agreed with it when the final choice got made. This would be an honest and accurate statement, even if not fully specific to all the details of the scenario. It is like these skeptics just willfully forget how reality works and people speak and nitpick and little verses desperate for anything. Could I be more precise and exhaustive when I tell someone those statements? Sure, and sometimes I am, but language, conversation, and writing doesn't always work that way and shouldn't always even, and that is fine. It doesn't mean there is some massive contradiction in who named my dog and why my dog was named specifically what she was named nor that I was lying at any point about who did.
@Archaeonauts
@Archaeonauts 5 ай бұрын
That was very interesting. I don't know if I've ever noticed this supposed contradiction before. But your analysis of it is well done and makes it make sense as one story and not a contradiction and not the merging of two different accounts.

I think, if we want to get technical, the text doesn't even say that Abraham named the place, or even that the place was named at that exact time. It just says it was called that because of that event. This leaves room for Isaac giving it the name later on.

@IP can you talk about why genesis is not just a "just so" mythological retelling of the jews' history by making up the patriarchs. For instance, the account of Lot kinda comes off that way a little and it seemed weird to me that Jacob says that the scepter will not depart from judah but somehow it seemed unknown that it was a problem that Saul became king from the wrong tribe. I've been wondering about this for a while.

The "Higher" Critics of the 19th Century approached textual criticism with various idiosyncratic presuppositions. If there is no God, or if the Torah is not considered an inspired scripture, then there are no such thing as miracles, and ancient peoples did not vet their source documents when they were compiled later. Much of the content is considered legendary. These are just some of the presuppositions these scholars held. Archeological discoveries since this school of thought was propagated have shown evidence to support the historicity of the Torah. The problem is that those presuppositions became part of secular ideology to this day. These same presuppositions have been applied by secular scholars who study the New Testament and the Quran.

To tell the truth I wouldn't have touched this subject with a ten-foot staff. It's not the name of Beersheva that is a problem it is because Abimelech and Phicol are in both stories of Abraham and Isaac and Abimelech was lusting after both Sarah and Rebekah some 75+ years apart. Not to mention Sarah would have been 89 years old at the time and Rebekah about 50. Gen. 21:32 Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army took Sarah, Abrahams wife. Later Gen. 26:26 Abimelech and Phicol, the commander came to Issac from Gerar. This was after Abraham died so would be 76+ years from the first meeting. Incredible that Abimelech and Phicol are all still alive and ruling. Why are there Philistines in this story? The Philistines did not invade Canaan before the Amarna Letters of the 14th Century and the first battle the Egyptians had with them was in 1175 BC.

The standard interpretation of the Bible reads with the Genesis 1 character and the Genesis 2 character being the exact same character and this generates near 70,000 contradictions (see reason project). The non-contradictory Bible reads with the Genesis 1 character and the Genesis 2 character as polar opposite characters. Are contradictions false? 🤔
