While consideration to the environment should be paid, and hopefully these territorial disputes will be better resolved, who knows what could be hidden under the ice? We're talking about an area more than half the size of North America that's gone mostly untouched by human hands. Maybe the miners will find some archaeological treasure, another meteorite with signs of life on it, or a cure for cancer in some previously undiscovered mineral.

The "leave nothing behind" rule also applies to tourists, who are told when they take a trip off their cruise ship to go walk on the icy land that they are not to leave anything, not even hair. Apparently cruise ship companies can be very alert to tourists traveling with other companies just in case they break that rule so one company can be taken out of the tourist running. I got this info from a friend of my mum's who took a cruise that stopped off at the Antarctican peninsula.

You missed a key component of the US approach to Antarctic territorial claims - some countries have sections of the pie they've claimed, some don't but freely build in someone else's claim, but the US has chosen a third option. All the territorial claims currently made radiate outward from the geographic south pole, which is exactly where the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is located (named for a Brit and a Norwegian, but it's all ours!). The US hasn't just built in someone else's claim, we've built the continent's second-largest station (second to another US station, no less) in ALL of the current territorial claims at once. Also, we got a special exemption to the treaty that allows us to bury human waste (graywater/sewage only) in the icecap at the Pole, so your poop emoji flying out isn't *quite* accurate. All the coastal stations (which are the majority) do ship out human waste though, I believe.

Does every country need to agree to renew the act or just the majority? I'd prefer if no one drilled for oil there, but that's just me
@Treviisolion
@Treviisolion 8 жыл бұрын
+JustinBobcat Well every country that would have the power to mine there. If Antarctica were to become completely claimed and then everyone who owned the claims renew the mining part of the deal, then if another country like Brazil decided they wanted to mine there, because they hadn't signed the treaty, as long as the treaty didn't require the countries that signed to give up their claims, Brazil would have to go through those countries who have claims first. Now if everyone but say the UK were to sign the treaty then all the countries that signed wouldn't be able to mine, but the UK could mine, at least in the land that they claimed was theirs (and if they wished to prevent international tension, only the land that everyone else agreed was theirs and wasn't claimed by someone else).
@someperson5506

@rondowar
@rondowar 8 жыл бұрын
+JustinBobcat everyone who's part of the treaty has to agree to the treaty those who agree to the treaty might enforce the rules from that treaty, if that is part of the treaty since I don't know the exact wording of the treaty and can't be bothered to read the thing, I'd say this is the safe answer: if enough major forces agree to the no mining thing then there will be no mining there for however long they agree on and I'd be surprised if they go promining, as that will get a LOT of border disputes, which could end up in tempers, which could end up in war, which could end up with a nuked away earth, which none of the countries (apart from north-korea maybe :P) want

Most videos like this show the Norwegian claim fading off towards the south pole itself. This was due to the somewhat inconclusive text of the claim. However since 2015 Norway claims have been changed to include the pole itself. So the shape of Norways claim should noe look like the others, a whole pizza slice and not one someone has taken a bite from. 2015 was also the year a Norwegian king visited the South Pole for the first time. The claim to Peter 1st Island is also part of the Antarctic treaty, while Bouvet Island is an overseas part of Norway (Bi-Land in Norwegian) like Jan Mayen Island (and the peace of land furthest away from anyone or anything in the World apparently).
