Much of today’s contemporary music and pop culture in the United States can be traced back to Black and Indigenous musicians.
However, their contributions have long gone unrecognised, and their songs have often been commodified for a majority white audience.
So how are musicians today working to undo that historical erasure? And how do they continue to celebrate Black performance and artistry?
On UpFront, Marc Lamont Hill sits down with Jake Blount, an award-winning musician and scholar specialising in the early folk music of Black Americans, and Mark Anthony Neal, distinguished professor of African and African American Studies at Duke University and author of several books including: What the Music Said: Black Popular Music and Black Public Culture, to discuss the contributions and erasure of Black and Indigenous musicians.

This is a very good overall considered discussion. There is still however evolutionary realities, foundations as to why things developed as they did, and in Entertainment, Music, theatre, Film, all of it, media, communications in general, it is broadly that whites were in the United States first, Irish, Jewish, English etc, and got the control of everything initially, built the theatres, controlled the vaudeville chains, music publishing companies etc, became the bosses. People like W,C ,Andy, Scott Joplin ,Bert Williams. Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith,, that are in recorded history got in to management more than just getting employed, having their own minstrel troops etc, in more recent times the likes of the Chess record label, which a couple of Jewish guys helped get going, and later Motown ,Barry Gordey became huge, up till the likes of Opragh Winferry enterprises, and I would be very surprized if the likes of Morgan freeman, Denzel Washington, Tiger Woods, in their different vocations were not naming their own price, and very much else. I am not suggesting everything has been handed out on a plate, or the realities of a bigger white market in basic everything has been a general barrier all along, the thing is though anybody ,of any color, culture, that has talent, and with that is industries, work savey, positive, determined cannot get on and do well for themselves or their color,or culture many have, and still do.

So-called African Americans are of extraterrestrial origin, their genetics pre-date that of the earth. Europeans on the other hand were created in the waters of Earth and are an artificial life form. Artificial life forms cannot create anything. Try again. You were not in the America's first.
