Highly doubt that the majority of Norwegian athletes are on unfair medication, at least not at the same government-funded scale that the Russians were guilty of. @123maggen6 жыл бұрын
That would severely handicap countries like canada and russia who both have huge areas of land too cold for any substantial habitation.
@PokePresto6 жыл бұрын
Yea that dosent work. It might be cold here in Norway but most people live in areas with plus degrees and not 40 minus evn though we have thoose places aswell. Belive me you do not get an advantage training in minus 40 degrees.
@taboo1601reloaded6 жыл бұрын
Okay it should not be the area that is the coldest, it should be the area where the athletes come from. In Germany for example basicly all the medalist came from the bavarian alps. There should be temperatures wich are the best for the varios winter sports. Then we can say thats to cold or to cold for that and make and algorithm out of that.
@PokePresto6 жыл бұрын
Well u can say that but here in Norway its quite divided: Cross countrie skiers are from Oslo area or Trondheim witch is in the middle. Skaters are from Bergen west coast and Ski jumpers are from the north so for norway atleast that dosent work either.
@123maggen6 жыл бұрын
wasserbeutel but then that wouldn't work for nations like Norway where the athletes, while mostly from around either trondheim or oslo, can come from all over the place. One of the xc skiers for example is from alta, which probably has a lower average temperature to the southern parts by 7-10C. It kinda gets back to his point about no system being perfect. What might make more sense is looking at how long the country can facilitate stable sub zero temperature training, but even that has its flaws.

@@teli6350 Its not stereotypes. Norwegian pick up more trash then India. So a country with 1.3 billion People manages to pick up less trash then a country With 260 times less People. I think you left out one important variable: landscape. The fact that Austria has mountains and the netherlands has a lot of non flowing surface water and that Norway has both hugely influences their ability to breed alpines skiers and ice skaters. It might be interesting to look at what nations stand out in the way that they don't have the terrain but do have the athletes.
@tifpo336 жыл бұрын
Hang on! I agree that having mountains is important to skiing and snowboarding, but "non flowing surface water" ... WTF?!?. I think it's more interesting to measure event diversity among medals. The netherlands for example pretty much took all of their medals in the skating events. So if you could measure the country with the most medals in a lot of different sports, that I think would be an interesting way of seeing it.
@MotRi19866 жыл бұрын
I think Norway would be on the top of that also, from the top of my head. Gold in cross country skiing, ski jumping, biathlon, alpine skiing, twin tipp slope style and speed skating. We also got medals in curling and nordic combined, I cant remember if we got any medals in snowboard.
@jon-eriknijhuis62556 жыл бұрын
To be fair Norway won a lot in skiing. And you can say skiing has a lot of different parts. But skating a 10km or a 500m is very different. It's like slalom skiing and super G. So if you say ice skating is all the same than skiing is also all the same
@Jollvardscoots6 жыл бұрын
To me alpine skiing is all the same sport, and cross country skiing as well. So that makes skating all the same too
@MotRi19866 жыл бұрын
Jon-Erik Nijhuis this is true but I would say that with the introduction of mass start, sprint and tours is cross country skiing we see much more specialization with in cross country skiing than we did 20 years ago. Up until year 2000 80% of the races where between 10k and 50k and they where almost exclusively individual start aka time trial if you compare it to cykling. There is only two cross country skiiers that have manage to win a championship or world cup victory in all events both in skating and classic style. Marit Bjørgen, by far the greatest cross country skier of all time and Petter Northug the biggest talent in cx skiings history. If you look at the Olympics you had four different winners in the four individual events for both male and female. On the two team events US won the female team sprint and Norway took home the relay. And Norway took home the male two team events.
@jon-eriknijhuis62556 жыл бұрын
Morten Ringdalen I get what you are saying. Ice skating has the same. There is the 10km, 5km, 1500m, 1000m, 500m then you have the team persuit and the mass start. They all are very different to skate. So everybody has there own specialization and the dutch just have good skaters in every category. The 10km is all about endurance and taking the corners very well and the 500m is about pure power in the legs and skating as hard as possible. Even in short track ice skating, but we failed a bit this winter olympics on that part.

You also forgot one major, really important thing: nationality is pretty pointless nowadays. Look at ice skating: athletes representing Germany (and winning gold) in pair come from France and Ukraine. French-Canadian ice skating coach Bruno Marcotte worked with athletes (and trained them in Montréal) from Canada, Italy, Japan, the US, the UK and god damn North Korea. It's also worth noting that some countries (Germany, Canada, the US, Russia are prime examples) try to be good and perform everywhere, diluting their budget within several sports, while others focus on one thing and pour all their eggs in that single basket, ending-up with disproportionate resulte in that single discipline. Norway and skiing is a good example, but look at the Netherlands' result in the 2018 Olympics: 16 medals in speed skating (long track) and 4 in speed skating (short track). Nothing at all anywhere else! Nevertheless, good video man. Thumbs up!

It shouldn't just be how wealthily a country is, but how much they actually invest in their athletes vs those who have to find their own funding. For instance, Canada has "Own The Podium", a not-for-profit organization that was founded in 2004. Their partnerships with the program relies on support and commitment from government, corporate, sport and performance partners. Supports include direct funding, investment, sport expertise and service delivery. It was originally put in place to help fund the best athletes to showcase at the Vancouver 2010 olympics, as Canada never won gold on home soil previously. Because the campaign was such a success, Own The Podium is now well known across Canada, and more people/organizations/and federal government is more open to funding the program in hopes to find the best Summer and Winter athletes in Canada, and give them the needed funding to reach the olympics, and hopefully a medal. In that vain, we don't know how much other countries invest in their athletes. For instance, the USA woman's hockey team (who won gold) almost dropped out of the olympics in protest as they felt they weren't being properly compensated as compared to their direct counterparts, Team Canada. It wasn't until Fall 2017 did USA hockey agree to a change in agreements to mirror what the Canadian team was getting. If USA hockey stuck to their guns, and the ladies didn't attend, that would be a HUGE blow to the organization, and hurt their game that they are trying to grow with girls.

We here in Finland are used to moderate success in winter games so achieving "only" 1 gold,1 silver ,4 bronze seems more like a reason to be ashamed than to celebrate :) At least the gold came from mens 50km skiing.

I don’t think that distance from the equator or average temperature are good indicators of how good countries are. If you take the US, for example, the average temperature will even out if you have both Alaska and Arizona, and again if you have a bunch of Colorado athletes, using the distance from the equator, they are closer to the equator than Germany, thus worth more, it seems illogical
@thomasnorb40776 жыл бұрын
All of the US is far south of Europe though. Norway has islands far north of Alaska's most northern point.

Umm, yeah there are a few permanent settlements on Svalbard. www.ssb.no/en/befolkning/statistikker/befsvalbard/halvaar
@vgtx16 жыл бұрын
Do you have any sources at all? according to the link from SSB above the number of permanent inhabitants is 2210 in Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund. The only law i know of concerning how long you can live there, is that you can't die there because of the permafrost and the following challenges of burial. If you are close to or nearing death you are sent to the mainland or your country of origin, if you dont have a visa to enter Norway or norwegian citizenship.
@vgtx16 жыл бұрын
Sure anecdotal evidence is fine in some instances, but when you're corrected and presented with a reliable source, then it's kind of strange to stick so heavily to your faulty arguments. Again from SSB circa 1500 of the 2210 inhabitants are Norwegian and the rest are from 40+ different countries, primarily Thailand. The documentary probably mentioned the large amount of Russians in reference to Barentsburg a Russian settlement on Svalbard, almost or entirely inhabited by Russians. Now that is a very different and strange situation due to the Svalbard Treaty, Norway owns the islands and the exclusive economic area around it, but other countries (that have signed the treaty) can set up settlements there and as the Russians do, mine coal. As to how isolated it is, well they have some of the fastest internet in the world on average, a commercial airport with daily flights to Norwegian cities, a university, etc, etc, etc. you are however right about the fact that the economic feasibility of the Norwegian settlements are questionable in the near future, due to the Norwegian government closing all coal mining operations. The Norwegian settlements are hoping that tourism and the opening of trading routes from Asia due to the melting ice on the north pole, will bring future economic opportunities. The Russians probably only continue their coal operations on the island due to geopolitical reasons.

One more factor that i think would be interesting to consider, is geography, which can be combined with climate as a factor. If a country has no mountains, I think it would be less likely that they win many medals, since most of the sports at the winter olympics involve going down a snowy mountain.

I reckon the most accurate ranking would be to only count medals won in speedskating, so I get to indulge in more nationalistic chest beating. :)

Honestly I think the climate and terrain should be the largest factor in these statistics considering mountainous and colder regions have more readily available facilities to train for the winter Olympic Games. Summer a lot of people are roughly in the same boat since you could just do things inside or go to a different part of the country but the winter games requires specific conditions to train making it harder for some countries but easy for others like Canada and Norway.

Im from the netherlands. It's cool that we're so good at speedskating, but we're so high in the overall medal rankings while we suck at other sports than speed skating. (In the winter olympics) We're only this high because there are so many medals within the category. We rank high in almost all these types of rankings. (Hurray!) But it would score much lower if you categorised by type of sports

Like the US in summer olympics with swimming? You shouldn’t feel sorry that we are so good at only a couple of winter olympic sports. No country can dominate all sports in the olympics. Ice skating is part of our culture, it’s not that we only focus on sending only ice skaters and shorttrackers btw.. our curling team could almost go to the winter olympics this year. Since ice skating is such a competitive and big sport in the Netherlands, ofcourse we gonna slay the winter olympics with it. What else can we do? Since we have no mountains or half a year worth of snow, we can stripe half of these winter olympics sports off our list. It just so happens that speed skating and shorttrack have lots of medals to be earned.
@Michael-fi7vu6 жыл бұрын
idkyara _ I dont think he is complaining about Netherlands focusing and being good at Speed skating. I guess its because there is so many medals to earn(just like Swimming) so someone like Michael Phelps can win 10+ medals meanwhile a Long Jumper or a boxer can only win one medal

It's interesting how certain countries perform REALLY well in specific winter sports, for example the Netherlands in speed skating are beasts. And Norway does very well in skiing events. Looking at our medal spread this year, I'm not entirely sure which category Canada excels at but it was a lot of fun to watch!

Very interesting analysis! Another important thing to look at is the diversity, ie in how many different sports has the country won medals. I personally care more about total medals than gold medals. I also believe that certain events are worth more than others because of the greater effort or number of athletes (hockey, curling, relays, 50km cross country skiing) Go Canada 🇨🇦 Let's hit 30 in Beijing
@theloniousm43376 жыл бұрын
You are missing the biggest indicator of Olympic success and probably the hardest data to source. There is ONE variable that determines Olympic success; money invested in athletes and training programs. Athletes are made not born.

If the Olympics didn't have national medals and just had athletes compete what would be the point? I mean it's great and all to celebrate the individual athletes but the real beauty is that each athlete carries their whole nation on their back. This is why instead of just punishing the Russian dopers they punished the entire nation by not allowing their Anthem or flag to be displayed at the games. I'm damn well certain any other country would think 5 times before letting their athletes get caught for offenses like these. Having your nation's pride on your shoulders is what makes the Olympics the best sporting event in the entire history of the Earth.
