The thing is that Madrid understood that if they played city with agression.. city would have thumped that which is obvious because pep's analysing skills are otherworldly.. he definitely would have found gaps and flaws in Madrid from their performance in the first leg..how they played..what tactics they used.. Same thing happened last year at the etihad..from a 1-1 draw to a 4-0 defeat.. Carlo knew that.. he also knew that defeating city at the etihad with agression is probably next to impossible with the team he had .. So the best madrid could do to fancy a chance at victory was try to hit them on counters and if a lead was built, defend very low and let them have the ball... This was the plan.. but city equalised.. So Madrid had no choice to push them to pens... And penalties are always 50-50.. Had city been more clinical..they would have gone thru.. but you have to say madrid defended superbly for 120 mins

Talking about approach like we didn’t play better than City at Bernabéu. We were better team at our home, all three city goals were lucky goals. Maybe Foden one's wasn’t but still….at etihad we played really well in the first half, we scored an important goal and then we defended brilliantly. We created same number of big chances as them. Keep in mind, it was city, the defending champions,the treble winners, probably the best team in the world and we knew it, so the approach was not to lose. And on that risk talking and risk averting…..we scored the goal first and till that point we were talking the risk. We were pressing them, we tried to play like that. After we had the lead there was no need for us to take the risk. We just had to defend. We're not barca who had to play a certain type of football to please the fans and stuff. We win….thats what we do. And for that even if we have to play pragmatic football, we’re up for it
