We used to have a pretty aggressive cleanup program run by the EPA. I think it was Reagan who pulled the teeth on that - too many regulations, you know. Too expensive. If you make a mess, you clean it it up. That's the way it's supposed to work. It's called "responsibility." Today, most companies just walk away. It's called "profit."

What? Who? The polluters (corporations), of course. Is this a trick question?

Brought to taxpayers to pay for by unregulated capitalism that doesn't account for externalities such as air, water and land pollution. Corporations make their bucks, declare bankruptcy and leave the mess for taxpayers to cleanup. RCRA was a good start but sorely underfunded by corporations.

Jimmy carter was concerned about love canal tragedy unlike the corrupt state officials who were refuting and ignoring claims of residents living in that neighbourhood. hopefully condition of love canal is better now.
