After pushing Congress toward legislation that forced companies to help shoulder the burden of cleaning up the pollution they created-known as the Superfund Bill-Love Canal would become the first site identified for remediation.

In the late 1970s, residents of Love Canal, a working-class neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York, discovered that their homes, schools and playgrounds were built on top of a former chemical waste dump, which was now leaking toxic substances and wreaking havoc on their health. Through interviews with many of the extraordinary housewives turned activists, POISONED GROUND: THE TRAGEDY AT LOVE CANAL shows how they effectively challenged those in power, forced America to reckon with the human cost of unregulated industry, and created a grassroots movement that galvanized the landmark Superfund Bill.

We used to have a pretty aggressive cleanup program run by the EPA. I think it was Reagan who pulled the teeth on that - too many regulations, you know. Too expensive. If you make a mess, you clean it it up. That's the way it's supposed to work. It's called "responsibility." Today, most companies just walk away. It's called "profit."

Brought to taxpayers to pay for by unregulated capitalism that doesn't account for externalities such as air, water and land pollution. Corporations make their bucks, declare bankruptcy and leave the mess for taxpayers to cleanup. RCRA was a good start but sorely underfunded by corporations.
