Who's that Pokémon? New Cut Fighter Discovered for Super Smash Bros. 64

It makes a lot of sense. Clefairy was pushed as a secondary mascot back during Gen 1 (alongside Poliwhirl). I think Sakurai made the right call. While I think Metronome could've been a fun move to use for a fighter, it could've also been too much in terms of it's randomness, and we got characters in the future with similar random attacks, like G&W's judge, and Hero's spell list. Not only that, but it'd be crazy to think about a world without Smash Jigglypuff considering it's legacy in the competitive scene for Melee, and with how some platform fighters would have characters inspired by Jigglypuff, like Nick Brawl's Nigel.

@@Glasshouse828 The rumors are baseless and were debunked by SourceGaming a while back Meowth probably wasn't considered because he wasn't quite as major a character at the time Smash 64 had come out. Even if the anime had been running longer, he likely wouldn't have been Sakurai's first pick for the next Pokemon fighter since he'd need a whole new moveset. You'd have been more likely to see Mewtwo, who actually WAS supposed to be in Smash 64

The game was in development during 1999, by that point the anime was already two years old (Orange Islands arc in fact), and Meowth had been cemented as a main character since the 2nd episode in 1997, what do you mean he wasn't important during the game's development? The rumors are baseless though, I just want to correct that part of "he wasn't a main character yet during development"

Fun Fact: Clefairy was originally going to be Ash’s Pokemon in the anime but they decided to make it Pikachu instead I think because Clefairy was too girly. Imagine a world where Clefairy became the mascot of the Pokemon franchise

@@FloridusMan apparently it’s because out of the original 150, Poliwhirl was Satoshi Tajiri’s favorite, so I guess they figured they should feature him in a lot of supplementary material at the time, of course the most famously as Red’s first Pokémon in Adventures like you mentioned

This is painful information. I love Clefairy and always thought it’d be cool in smash with metronome even though it’d never happen. It was also the original mascot of Pokémon(edit: not true). I hope Clefairy makes a comeback

That term isn’t necessarily to say it was gonna be the face of the series in the same way Pikachu is now. But it was made more central in certain material such as the manga that was mentioned, and was also just more prevalent back in Gen 1 with the pokedolls being based on it and Bill turning himself into a Clefairy. Ok that last one is a stretch but you see where I’m coming from. The statement “original mascot” isn’t like an official thing but there’s a reason people say it. Regardless I just wish Clefairy was given that sort of attention again

@@TheNodfullNod When people say "original mascot", I'm sure they only think "face of the franchise". That manga is the only thing they have to make this claim, though it was never released in the West, and also has Pikachu as a main character. Pokemon like Poliwhirl could also be seen as a mascot because of how more prevalent it was back in Gen 1. The Poke-Doll also didn't have a sprite until Gen 3,, so no-one outside Japan knew it was a Clefairy doll.

I think there is 1 more MAJOR FLAW of why Clefairy was cut is because of Kirby has mutiple jumps and Clefairy didnt show none of that in original anime series or ANY of the gen 1 games in genenral.

1:18 Really? That would be very difficult to program Clefairy to use random movesets considering its form factor. Thankfully it became part of the Pokéball Pokémon and used random Pokéball Pokémon attacks. Clefairy has metronome, but it's hard to translate in fighter form. If Nintendo were to include a fighter with randomized movesets, ROB64 would have been a good one. Star Fox 64 was not only relevant, but he barely had anything to do but serve as a messenger robo for the Star Fox crew. Nintendo could have creative liberties and give him something refreshing to stand out from the rest of the Super Smash Bros. cast.

I know many people have commented this already, but Clefairy being considered for Super Smash Bros. makes sense given that they were originally positioned as the mascot of Pokémon before that role went to Pikachu. What an interesting discovery!

I think Clefairy would've been hilarious. It could have a wide range of moves thanks to its movepool, thus representing all of Pokemon at the time. It could even have Metronome proper, similar to G&W's down B. Basically, it would be like Kirby in the sense that it would use a wide range of abilities.

Honestly, considering Pikachu and Pichu's situation, nothing is stopping modders from making Clefairy a semi-clone of Puff if they want to. Just replace Rest with Metronome, just make it a guaranteed critical attack like Rest instead of totally random.

Now that's a new info that I've never heard of for the first time! But having two Normal types (Clefairy was originally that before XY was a thing) in Smash could've been a painful one to be honest. I could hardly imagine how Clefairy would fight just by using Metronome. I could say Sakurai did a right choice NOT to bring Clefairy in game, if did people would've become more pissed because not many Pokemon players owned Clefairy back then.

Personally, I find Jigglypuff more appealing to look at than Clefairy, even if Clefairy would made more sense, since it was supposed to be the mascot. If Remix ever leave from hiatus, I hope they introduce Clefairy as a "surprise" fighter. Just get rid of the out of place Lucas and Dark Samus for more storage space.

I think the reason Jigglypuff was chosen was either because Sakurai was trolling or due to Jigglypuff’s prominence in the anime, I still think it should’ve been Meowth as the 2nd Pokemon rep for Smash 64

Part of it is that a lot of its portrayal is taken from the anime (which I don't like taking precedence over game material), but part of it must also be because I hate its moveset lol, I honestly don't know exactly what it is. Just not a fan
