I had a friend who told ridiculous stories like this. We all thought she was full of it until I actually met her mega rich, russian art dealer friend and his utterly psychotic mother and supermodel sister, and her Saudi Arabian exchange student sugar daddy. Turns out she actually does has that crazy a life for some of it, and believes her pathological liar family for the rest. Now I take what she says with a grain of salt, but I'm always hesitant to completely brush it off.

The story about the co-worker always one-upping people and lying about being a preemie reminded me of something that happened to me. I am a family historian and I was visiting this archive where I could find records that were still too new to be published online, or readily available at a regular archive. I decided to look up my uncle's birth record; of course I knew when and where he was born but when I could I might as well confirm the data. Well, turned out he was a day older than my co-worker, who we might call Mia, so I also found Mia's birth record. Mia was in poor health and seldom spent time with us other teachers as she had her own easily accessible classroom and just dropped by for a class and then went home due to her disablity. So I had only spoken to her about a handful of times but she had a very unique first and last time so this birth record was absolutely her. Turned out she was a twin, and they were preemies. The twin didn't make it. About two months later Mia dropped by the teachers' lounge and I told her about how I had looked for my uncle's birth record. When I mentioned his birth date Mia just nodded and said: "Oh, so you found my birth record too." She then told me then story of her birth and her twin. Thankfully she wasn't upset at all - and if I had deliberately went looking for the record she would have had every right to be. Now I just found it by accident.

I’ve known multiple people like this. 1 only a little older than me. Keep in mind, I’m 15. It started of fairly reasonable-him saying he drowned as a kid and was brought back. It eventually over the course of several months escalated to him saying people have tried to kill him, stab him, shot at him, but hit his friend instead, that he has two MacBooks, but used one to shield him from the bullet, and also that he had a metal pole hit him in the chest, miraculously miss all organs, and tried to say he has no scars. He said he’d died 7 times, and that his father owned multiple companies. Keep in mind, this guy is 15 years old. We don’t live in a big city. It’s a very suburban area, and crime doesn’t happen much if at all there. He also tried to say that his neighbors were serial killers. Either he’s a liar or his dad is into some very illegal stuff. Another person was someone my mom dated. He made up stories saying that he was burnt with acid after being held captive by some people in an appoint military force, and that he’d been to all these different places travel. He even tried to say he was Dolly Parton’s cousin, and Mark Burnett’s cousin (Mark Brunett produced Shark tank and Survivor) all because they had the same name. He was not only probably a pathological liar, but took advantage of my mother when she was drunk. If it were up to me he’d be in jail for it.

I'm not going to say much, but most of his family probably isn't equipped to raise a kid with such severe emotional issues, but that doesn't make them evil. I highly doubt that most of his family is evil. He's just been through a lot, and not every one has the resources to take that on. Plus, not this kid specifically, but I wonder if some people lie intentionally, or if they genuinely believe what they're saying.

I’ve noticed in these stories there seem to be a few different types of people which I will now categorize. You have “The Total Badass” which is usually the guy that has the most out there lies and the person is traditionally a guy and most cases very scrawny. Then you have “The Rich Kid.” That one is pretty self explanatory and they can be found with minimal snooping around. “The Poverty Stricken” is the opposite of the rich kid and usually do something that gets themselves caught. And finally the most despicable of all of them “The False Valor.” Usually a guy who lies about being a navy SEAL, usually ST-6, and says they have a Purple Heart and ptsd. In some cases they will wear military uniforms that most people don’t notice things, but anyone with military knowledge will notice. For instance, they’ll be wearing an army uniform with marine patches or will have something against regulations like a very long beard or hair

Now I knew the truth because 1. My father's company had had a contract with that broadcaster for over a decade at the time and when I asked my dad if it was true, he thought I was telling him a joke and 2. The car that dropped him off in the mornings was a delivery vehicles from the panel beating company a friend's dad owned and the kids dad was ACTUALLY the employee. I didn't say anything because 1. I didn't care enough to 2. I knew his lies only worked on the stupid and 3. Before end of first term he was gone (I think, I lost interest in his nonsense)

I feel the opposite of this is people hearing someone make mundane comments/claims and somehow thinking they're horrendous lies that need to be exposed. To invent an example, let's say there's a group meeting up and someone arrives late. Person A: Sorry I'm late! I lost my keys and had to look for them. Most of group: (either says, "It's okay," or says nothing because they don't care) Person B: Why don't you tell us what really happened!? Person A: (confused) Excuse me? Person B: We deserve to know the truth! Rest of group: (stares at Person B in confusion) Person A: I...just told what happened. Person C: Why would you thinking he/she is lying?! Person B: Come on, you *actually* believe he/she lost his/her keys!? Person C: Yes, because it happens all the time. It's not some far-out claim. Person D: My Mom lost her keys last week and we had to look for them. What, do you think my mom was lying!? Person B: (either mumbles angry comments and sulks for the rest of the meeting, makes some bizarre rant about how the truth will be revealed and storms off, or a combination of both) I don't support lying, but even if it turned out Person A was lying, what does it matter unless he was doing something horrible or is a suspect in a Scooby-Doo mystery? It could be he was late because he pooped himself and he lied about the keys because was sensitive about it, but that's really nobody's business. A variant of this that I've personally experienced is telling someone some mundane thing and having them ask, "Really?" like I've told some fantastic whopper (Note: The tone they use is a huge factor here). "I had the new chicken sandwich at McDonald's." "Really?" Why would I lie about eating a sandwich?! (Edit: I enjoyed the sandwich, but your taste buds and the quality of your local Mickey-Dee's may differ from mine)

Don't wanna overempathize with these people but a lot of these are from middle school and high school. When I was younger I would tell people real things and they would never believe me. If you're a native girl they never fucking believe you, it's really exhausting, I remember one time I was at camp in 8th grade and the camp was hiking up a mountain. My friend told me he was gonna go piss in the woods and I should make sure he comes back. I relayed the info to my camp counselor and she rolled her eyes and was like "are you SURE? ARE YOU TELLING THE TRUTH" and it was so weird because I had never really lied frequently before that moment. I said yes and some of us waited behind for him. We waited for half an hour before calling the people who went ahead and he was with them. The camp counselor just kept calling me a dirty liar and saying "you don't have to lie like this". I was straight up begging her to believe me and she wouldn't. An hour later we got to the top of the mountain and met up with the other part of the camp. I went to the guy and got pissed off at him and told him to tell my counselor that I was telling the truth. He did and then she was like "ok" not even an apology. When I asked why she wouldn't apologize she said "I dunno you just lie all the time." It was so gross because I had never lied to her. And like a week before that there was a dance at this camp where I had gone with a guy, then gotten very sick and had to go to the nurse, and she kept telling me not to lie about being sick, I should just reject the guy. Like she wouldn't let me go to the nurse immediately, and while I was sitting sitting the nurses bathroom in between chugging Gatorade as I was told (which btw turns out that electrolyte thing is a myth but it was 2011) she was saying "you know, you can just tell him you're not into him" That was one of the worst times I was called a liar for no reason but that sort of treatment is directed at native girls all the time. Every single character I've seen in media that's a chronic liar or thief is golden skinned and a little dirty and in vaguely indigenous clothing and shaggy thick brown hair, sometimes even explicitly off a reservation. During high school I straight up just adopted liar and thief as my persona. And a lot of the white kids would just spend their time tryna mess with me too, they'd be like "that person just said you're a dyke" and I'd be like "why would you say that about me" and then the original gossiper would be like "oh you know her, she's ALWAYS making things up to start drama about herself". When I got older the white people around me would pressure me to steal things for them. There was this girl who had me steal things for her all the time, then after high school was over she bullied me online for years lying about me a lot and generally saying horrible things about how I smell or that I eat with my hands or that my hair is too ethnic. Dumb shit. And then one post about me was just a selfie that said "for how disgusting Strange is, at least they stole this shirt for me. Thanks Strange!" Very sarcastic tones in that post. I hated it. And like I lied a lot in high school but it's because nobody fucking believes me anyway because I'm brown. I didn't even really think about it, at some point I just started lying because lies were more likely to be believed than the truth, like I could just talk about things that happened in my life and I'd be doubted. I was born in Kentucky and I remember one girl harassing me in freshman year because I don't have an accent, of course I don't you dumb fuck I lived there for 2 years when I was a baby and I was in Louisville. So I would lie because anything that wasn't EXACTLY WHAT PEOPLE EXPECTED was called a lie, and that's a problem when you're native, life isn't normally typical. But then at some point I just started lying about things that didn't even matter. I don't want to be specific but I'm at 6 minutes and something has reminded me of an embarrassing lie I once told. And it was sort of just because at some point, people are just as likely to believe me if I told them I ate corn for dinner yesterday as if I told them I've had sex with 2 14 inch penises. That's actually a lie someone else told me once though because once you start saying the lies I was telling in senior year of high school ("I had a brain scan and my brain had masculine nerve patterns" is, I think, the stupidest lie I ever told) you start being surrounded by a lot of liars and horrible people. When I told that person "I read online that the largest dick is 13 inches and it makes the guy pass out when he gets hard" the person responded by yelling that if I was calling him a liar, he'd beat my ass. That was the kind of person I used to call my friend at the end of high school. That same guy told me he was a teacher at 18 years old and that there was some special program at a local high school that let's 18 year olds do that, and that a guy was jacking off to him in class, and I actually believed that because it was one of the times lies he ever told but now that I'm thinking back on it, every time we skipped school he was able to hang out with us all day... I hate that meme though like "when you're telling someone a story and halfway through you realize theyre the one that told you the story" bro that is only a relatable moment to compulsive liars!!! Why was that a viral meme??? Anyway therapy helped but I'm just here to say that some of this stuff happens in middle school and high school especially to people like me who were already going through a lot. I think nobody believed me anyway, so I made up a version of myself and my life that wasn't shitty. I think for the people I was around once I started making ridiculous liar friends, some of them were narcissists who enjoyed spreading rumors about other people because they thought it made them seem interesting and it was the only way they knew how to care about others is if they cared about how much they are disgusted by that person, some of them just have boring lives and want to start drama to entertain themselves, some of them have had drama spread about them and want someone else to do that to because it gives them control they were lacking. I know some of this is hard to believe because I've already admitted I used to be a compulsive liar but I went through EMDR therapy for a long time for the bullying I dealt with and parental abandonment stuff, it's not worked out all the way but I feel like compulsive lying was one of the easiest problems I learned to manage after I dropped out

I said I was going to ask his then-wife if that was true and he said that she wasn't there for that part. Yeah right lol I don't think he went to those kind of things seeing as how he lives in LA and we lived in eastern Washington state. He claimed that him and our uncle tag teamed one of the hottest chicks I went to high school with. Not only would've it have been way out-of-character for this girl, but she would have to severely lower her standards. My brother isn't that attractive lol and my uncle was an alcoholic junkie at that time. I wouldn't share with him no matter the girl, gross! Definitely didn't happen tho. He fishes so any story that isn't accompanied by pictures/video is probably a lie. He fell asleep while masturbating, I walked in and found him asleep with his limp dick in his hand. He tried to say that I pulled it out and put it in his hand 😂😂😂 like no bro, wtf 😂😂😂 I asked if the mother of my children spent the night over there and he said no. That turned out to be a lie :'( So I don't talk to him anymore at all, it's been over a year. He has 3 kids with 3 different women, doesn't have custody of any. I have 4 kids, 3 from the one I was with and 1 from another girl but I had full custody of all my kids. He ruined my family. She ruined our family. I'll never forgive either of them. When I told her that someday the kids will know what she did she said she didn't care. Looks like the two of them are actually the biggest liars I've ever known.

Yes I had a friend who would do this (and still does) but by far my favorite story is that she's related to Mike Bloomberg. This was in 2019 when Mike Bloomberg was campaigning for president and we where all just making fun of all the presidential candidates and out of knowhere she says that she's related to Mike Bloomberg. She littlerally tried to make us believe it so hard because over the course of the next month she would send us texts like "I'm at Mike's house!"

I knew someone who bragged about unlocking hidden characters in Smash Brothers Melee that were either non-playable or not in the game at all but he insisted over and over that he unlocked them all as playable characters. This included Master Hand, Metal Mario, Giga Bowser, all of which were non-playable characters, plus Sonic and Tails which were announced to be in the game as an April Fools Day prank, they never were, apperently he didn't get the memo when he claimed to have them unlocked. It finally got to the point where I went over to his house just to see what characters he actually had unlocked and just as I expected none of the characters he bragged about were in there. He made up some excuse about the save file being deleted and having to start over. In retrospect he probably just did it for attention he didn't have a lot of friends, but it made a terrible first impression. On the flip side someone also told me something I thought was a lie that turned out to be true... that you actually could get a Mew in the original Pok'emon games. Though most methods for getting one were a lie the game shark cheat code was the only method that actually worked. Great job GameFreak, always having a Pok'emon in your games that requires cheating to unlock them. Also... Pok'emon have a max potential of level 100 but you'll run out of ways to grind for XP around level 75 because nothing in the game is higher than that. This basically means maxing out the levels for all your Pok'emon is also impossible without cheating.

A girl in my class in primary school was spouting the most ridiculous lies. Her origin was somewhat south Asian and I knew where she lived which wasn’t the best building. Some of the things she said was that in the biggest bead of her bracelet (cheap thing) was the first shooting scar that ever fell on earth, she was the princess of Pakistan, her uncle was Shah Rukh Khan, her other uncle was the president of Pakistan (though she was the princess?), that her father was a billionaire, that she got 12,000€ pocket money a week, described her house as the coolest shit ever (like I said I knew where she lived, it was a small apartment in a damaged building) and just so much more bullshit 😂 Sorry for the bad English
