Thanos is the one trying to achieve something, his snap. And a lot of famous stories have the villains as the protagonist. Meanwhile the avengers are the one trying to stop him from achieving something, making them the antagonists. In infinity war, at least. Once we switch to endgame the roles reverse. Avengers trying to reverse the snap and Thanos trying to stop them. But yeah in Infinity War, Thanos is the Protagonist. Sorry for the essay.
