The crabbing industry in California is under siege: from toxic algae, climate change, and, some argue, Big Oil. We spent a day on a fishing boat to find out what’s really threatening commercial crabbing, and what can be done about it.

I think I'd be just as happy to see big oil companies required to use some notable percentage of their profits to invest in and develop clean energy. Most of them purport to be "energy companies" anyway rather than merely oil producers, but when push comes to shove they use their money and influence to downplay their products' contribution to climate change and invest in new ways to tap into previously un- or under-exploited oil deposits (ironically now in the arctic seeing as ice pack has been consistently reduced) - and all because that's what is good for the bottom line, for investors. I get that developing new energy technology is expensive, but we did it at the turn of the last century for oil, and we can do it again for wind, solar, geothermal, etc. if the motivation is right (and sadly economic disincentives are usually the most potent way to encourage individuals and companies to make a change).

Climate change is impacting other farming/food industries also. More floods wipe out crops in low areas; stronger storms and drought delay or kill crops in others. In my lifetime alone, I’ve seen my hometown nearly give up on small scale (family owned) farming. Corn, wheat, soybeans, milo, tobacco... all gone except the largest farms. I’m really sad to see these industries and ways of life disappearing due to global warming. 😞

You know, with the right technology, sailing wouldn't be that unforseeable.. Of course it is cost prohibitive, and it is much easier to use what is basically 100 year old technology with inprovements. The technology exists to make sails the size of square miles, which could move even the greatest containerships in the world. All the technology exists, just not the political will (or lobbying) or the capita for it. All of these problems could be solved however in my opinion.. Goikg further in to economics, it probably makes no sense for 100 boats to fish, where one large boat could do the job much more efficiently.

@vessbakalov4090 5 жыл бұрын
@@rkan2 agree with you on most points. Sail container ships can be a thing. And your point of the efficiency of a larger operation is well taken. But that was literally half the tear jerking point of the clip - the death of the small fisherman. And look - I am sympathetic. I am not a big fan of massive industry monopolizing entire fields. I just got really irked that they blamed the climate problems we have on the oil companies. The analogy with tobacco is very flawed.
@rkan2
@rkan2 5 жыл бұрын
@@vessbakalov4090 Sure, my comment doesn't take in to account the fisherman directly. Meat also has a big impact on the environment - especially beef. If you don't want to go vegetarian, you can just choose to eat less meat - reduce your meat portions, incorporate more vegetarian meals into your diet - and switch some of your meals from red meat to things like poultry. It is sort of already too late but, while humans have definitely played a big role in it, our planet is also going through a natural warming cycle. Nuclear fusion would really help us right now but nuclear fission is a reliable, clean technology with virtually no environmental impact and is more than capable of meeting our energy needs. Promoting better farming techniques, building sanctuaries for endangered species in your area and promoting livestock grazing techniques that counter creeping desertification are all wonderful ways that you can personally start making a difference.

Global warming is mainly caused by industrial farming, if we want to change things we need to use our resources better, use restorative grazing, and clean energy. If large fishing companies wanted to boycott big oil, they could run on solar or algae biofuels. Ingenuity is the key

So you drove your car down to the dock and took the diesel powered boat out to investigate why co2 is causing low crab harvests and found it was due to algae bloom and have no solution to the problem. Why did you bother to put together the video?

Similar how to how people used to make overly general statements to refer to groups as a monolith like "The Blacks" or "The Jews", we capitalize "Big Oil" in the same way. But not in an ironic way, noooo....
