I have DCS and IL2, and while I love the immersion in VR of flying a war plane on a war zone and blowing stuff up, and shooting things in full 3D, I often found myself spending hours in DCS setting up scenarios of different units, creating a whole battlefield of everybody fighting each other and me just flying around, helping my side picking targets of opportunity. CMO is the next step if you find yourself spending more time in the mission editor creating a whole battlefield scenario, just to watch them fight, creating wargames. In CMO you can't fly or run around in your magnificent apocalypse you just created, but you can fully nerd out on the battle scenario itself simulated and in control of the tiniest detail with a massive library of units to create scenarios from. And not only learn a lot, but get direct inspiration for a simplified version in DCS where you can actively take off in an aircraft and join the fun, or carnage lol first person

Great podcast. Also keep in mind CMANO and now CMO are the civilian version of a professional military simulator that is used by multiple defense organizations.

Not just that the developers have supported the original CMANO for 6+ years with updates to the database, the engine added features and are incredibly responsive to their customer base. The ability to simulate everything from like the island hopping amphibious assaults at end of WW2 to the battle of the Faulklands to Desert Storm to cold war nuclear sub hunting under the ice cap is just amazing. If you are a miltary war gamer or just a history buff this "game" is incredible value at 80 bucks

Appreciate the conversation - CMO sounds interesting; nice to here you can manage the level of 'micor-management'.

Personally, I liked the kind of depth that Supreme Commander and Zero-K brought to the rts scene when they added in some more complex concepts such as radar, stealth, and jamming into the mix, which could make it easier or harder for long-range artillery to be used effectively. Command: Modern Operations managed to get me hyped for how more complex detection and countermeasure systems have become. For example, turning on radar or sonar might also put your own units at risk of getting detected, since the enemy might possess radar and/or sonar detection capabilities, and radar jammers might make it more difficult for radar-guided missiles to get a good lock-on to not only the jamming unit, but also other non-jamming units nearby, unless, say, the missiles had some auxiliary homing systems that could help them out, such as a home-on-jam function.

Just found you, nice podcast! Have to agree, first time I tried CMANO (the predecessor) I was overwhelmed. I tried to play it but couldn't, I was a lot younger then so I gave up easily. When CMO came out I bought it and began to learn it, and now it is one of my favorite games, beside ArmA and DCS. It is very exiting to try out tactics that you read about. I never thought that I spend half the time playing a Game, reading through a database. If you are interested into military stuff, the database is worth the 80 bucks and you get a free simulator with it to try the entries!

It's definitely a very very hard game to get into. I remember when I first played hearts of iron, and that took me a couple of days to get my head around and seriously know what I was doing. I wasn't 'good' at the game for a couple of hundred hours and didn't master it before the 500 hour mark. I think this game would take a good 50 - 100 hours to even have a rough idea what you're doing, and mastery? I don't know if it's possible haha. It's definitely intimidating but I'm sure it's incredibly rewarding when you wrap your head around it.
