I read one of Hick's books in my early youth, and I wanted to agree with him, but I was still under the influence of exclusivist theology (that I knew was wrong but could not shake away psychologically). I later found out about thinkers like James S. Cutsinger, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, David Bentley Hart, and Simone Weil who had very similar kind of ideas, but I think their views were better expressed than those of Hick. I would now say pluralists go a bit too far but inclusivists do not go far enough.

Thank you for a very succinct video presentation. I came to wanting to know more about John Hick from his interview by Robert Lawrence Kuhn in a Closer to Truth episode on Incarnation. I could now readily wish for that Copernican revolution to a Religious Pluralism but realize there are some really deeply entrenched dogmas that may prove impossible to overcome.

Hick was brilliant! What he really believed was that you can be spiritual without being dogmatically religious. He felt that religious dogma had baggage that suited the leadership of that religion and that if you look at all predogmatic religion such as ancient gnostic Christianity, Buddhism, indigenous mystics, etc you find a more common theme that they all believed. They all believed that everything is intrinsically connected, that all souls reincarnate multiple times for growth and experience, that nature is part of god just as everything else is, etc. he also believed that god is not a person or personality. Like the ancient mystics, god is a force, not a being. An intelligent source of energy that may be too complex to understand and that be making him an individual we are vastly simplifying his (or her) existence. I found his theories to make much more sense than anything I’ve heard in religious doctrine. Incidentally his views align a great deal with the perspective of thousands of documented near death experiences from people of all walks of life and all religious (and non religious) backgrounds. While NDEs will report seeing God, Jesus at other beings of sort, that there is no religion on the other side. Only oneness and love without judgment. It resonates with me anyway. I no longer subscribe to a religion but I am spiritual and seeking answers. I like a great deal of Hicks philosophy.
