Actually, they didn't have mitochondria - but it's for a very interesting reason I'm not just being annoying I promise. Basically, mitochondria are thought to be the first instance of multicellularity - there was a large single celled organism, that ate a smaller, simpler one, but for some reason the smaller one survived, and so it started doing respiration for the bigger one in exchange for safety (probably) and thus became an organelle. That means there's a tiny bit of DNA in our mitochondria thats just there, and we still have it today. It's believed that chloroplasts are also and example of this phenomenon, and they even got some bacteria to do it in a lab setting this very year, so it's apparently surprisingly common!

What really gets me thinking is the "why" of life. I have come to the conclusion that, lacking some intelligent design, life represents the ultimate evolution of matter. We're fundamentally made up of the exact same stuff (atoms) as a rock. What makes life special? The rock must obey the immutable laws of physics; it has no say in where it lies or for how long. For billions of years matter has been controlled and directed by these outside forces. Life finally gave matter the ability to break free of the tyranny of physical laws. Matter could at last decide how it moves through space and time, and where it comes to rest and for how long. The more life has evolved, the greater our freedom of motion and action has become. Life evolves to states of higher mobility and greater intelligence-- to states of greater freedom of action. I think that is the "why" of life. Just my two cents worth.

Faith gives many people a reason to go on and have hope. When faith stopped feeling like that to me, it was crushing. As it stands now, I marvel at the legacy of LUCA. We're the only life we know of and we've all had to scrape and claw to continue life on this little blue dot. I want to imagine several more million years that Earth carries life until the sun swallows the planet. Maybe by then, LUCA's descendents will find more homes amongst the stars.

The Last Universal Common Ancestor of Humans was Biblical Noah and his wife 4600 yrs ago. We have established this through Pedigree-Based Mutation Rates in the human sex chromosomes which demonstrates all modern humans come from one man and one of 3 women. But it's not just human sex chromosomes which show this. We've also found the same thing in dog DNA. Since the sex chromosomes are not Recombinant DNA, they serve as a better measure for building Family Trees than does Homology, protein coding DNA, fossils or rocks.

Faith implies that there is a creator that is omnipotent and omnipresent yet created a beautiful but ultimately imperfect world of endless suffering and evil that is continued based its whims, while science states that the beauty of the universe can be explained by immensely simple concepts stacking upon each other to create emergent beauty out of chaos and randomness, and that the history of life is one of gritty and violent yet still awe inspiring survival over the span of several billion years in a cold and indifferent universe. One fills me with rage while the other takes my breath away. I'm sure that you can tell which I prefer to believe.

The universe in all it´s absurd weirdness never ceases to amaze me. And I feel sorry for people who cannot apreciate it and flee into denial. (No, not talking about religion here, many great discoverys were made by people of faith.) The universe is just so full of odd and wonderous things, of great and small, terrible and aweinspiring and beutiful things. And I can get the same wonder from looking at the night sky knowing that every star is a far away sun and wondering wht else is out there as for a moment gazing at the light breaking through a glass bottle and imagining the photons bouncing around through the matter retroactively collapsing their wave of probability into a clear path from outside of time. It´s often so hard to wrap the mind around the sheer weirdness of the universe, but even the glimpses I catch are filled with wonder.

Baseless assumption. There is no indication of any higher being that we ever found outside of hearsay. Not a valid datapoint. I can baselessly say that because everything started out as hot gas, obviously a greater being has to have farted out our universe. Thats just as non falsifiable as saying “because it’s complex and I think it’s nice God had to have made it!” Usually I have no problem with religion. But people who go around and annoy other people who clearly did not ask for it and don’t believe in it in the first place with their imaginary friends are just pretentious and arrogant. Any discussion about the existence or non existence of god isn’t worth any moment of consideration because it’s non falsifiable. It has no impact on science or this discussion. No bugger off and complain to your in my opinion made up god you use to cope with the fact that we all have to die and are in the end inconsequential to the wider universe that someone disagreed with you on the internet or something.

Yep. The existence of a LUCA is a lot more likely than the alternative because if you think about it, plenty of lineages went extinct in every moment of geologic history. At some point, if you trace it back enough, there must have been one point at which all branches in the tree of life converge, unless the lineages of ALL the first lifeforms managed to survive. I went to a religious university and took a class called Neanderthals and Other Successes because it sounded funny. Unsurprisingly/unfortunately, I did see a lot of students drop the class within the first few weeks. This was the class that got me to become a geoscientist; one reason is because it demonstrated to me that belief and facts don't fill the same needs in a person and that they can be reconciled. Faith or no faith, our connection to LUCA should be viewed as no less than a miracle.
@The_craft3r

Honestly, evolution to me doesn't go against my (Christian) faith. God is omniscient, right? So he could have known in advance what would have happened with evolution. He knew that a small unicellular organism would have ensured that we are here today. He didn't need to place animals with his giant God hands or whatever. Just LUCA. Believing in evolution doesn't mean that we can't believe in God. He might have known from the start what would have happened. He did create us, just not directly. Or at least, that's what I believe.
@valdezjones
@valdezjones Жыл бұрын
@@The_craft3r I agree. I think a majority of Christians would agree on the basis of individual species (e.g. birds evolving into other birds) but it's not too big of a leap from there to accept fish-->reptiles-->dinosaurs-->birds. Then why can't it be the same case for us? It doesn't make us any less special, it makes us as much a miracle as any other life on earth. My conclusion is that much of the issue in Christianity over evolution is dogma and anthropocentrism.
@The_craft3r

@@valdezjones I think the problem is that Christian religion puts the man on another level different from animals, we are the chosen race by God, animals are inferior, at least to many. But even if chosen by God, why can't we share the same origin? God did create us all in any case.

I can't quite recall where I heard this, but: It's easy to feel insignificant in the grand scope of things when you only consider the truth but fraction of time in which humans have existed. But if you instead look at yourself as part of Life as a whole? Well then you are a part of something billions of years old. You are a part of a completely unbroken chain of survival and adaptation and growth. Our species may have only seen a fraction of a fraction of the life of the universe. But life has been around for over 20% of the time that matter has existed. You are not some statistical anomaly. You are not some forgettable blip. You are the proud frontrunner of a force so unstoppable, so indomitable, that it has dedicated billions of years of energy to defy the trend of decay and to instead flourish and grow. You are not insignificant. You are the universe looking back at itself. And you matter.
