Rabbi Shlomo ben Adret, known to his student by the acronym of his name Rashba, was one of the most brilliant Talmudists of medieval Spain. Student of Nachmanides (Ramban) and teacher to the Ritva, his writings are studied to the present day. Part of the Jewish Biography as History series by Dr. Henry Abramson, more available at www.henryabramson.com. This is the edited version of the Rashba lecture, cutting out some of the quiet time.

the eruv thing is strange to me. to me don't carry on the Sabbath doesn't seem to me to mean you can't have keys or your cylinder seal on your person, to me it seems like it means do not exert yourself in porting goods as a job or carrying heavy items to improve your home; I don't see where there conflation between carrying and having an item on ones person comes from. carrying to me means your arms/hands are full. I would argue my wallet or keys in my pocket are being 'carried' by my pocket; no that's too anthropomorphic, being borne by my pocket. so to me bearing a few incidentals is not 'carrying' if my arms are swinging free, not porting goods.

Who are you, to make such decisions? Are you head of nations or Moses?

Hello, David. Boy this internet thingy is so cool; you can reply to things written years ago! In case you haven't found a satisfactory answer since then, let me tell you that the Sabbath restriction on carrying in a space defined in Jewish law as a public Domain is mentioned in the Torah itself, where it mentions an Israelite man in the desert gathered sticks on the Sabbath and was stoned to death at the word of Moses. For more info, a suggest chabad.org or askmoses.con
