I'm Very Happy to see this on your channel, which I Absolutely support. The man we in the Chinese Martial Arts know as Wong Fei Hung is without a doubt, probably the most important person in regards to Southern Sil Lum martial arts. Although I've been promoting the Jow Ga system for over 40+ years, I did in the early 80's study the Hung Ga system here in Washington DC. My Sifu Joe Colvin was a student of Wan Chi Ming Sifu of NYC. Wan Sifu was himself a student under Tang Fong, who was a classmate of Lam Sai Wing Sifu, and studied directly from Wong Fei Hung also. From what I know of Wong Dai Sifu, Leung Foon is from what I have read, the only student of Wong Fei Hung to have learned Everything that Wong Sifu knew. He was also famous for being able to Crack the Ground/Cement under his feet when he sat in his Four Level Horse (Sei Ping Ma). He even learned the Rope Dart Skills from his Sifu. We speculate that Leung Foon most likely died of illness, probably catching some sort of respiratory disease which grew out of control. Again this is just speculation. Lam Sai Wing is Wong Fei Hung's most famous student for being the first person to have published Three Books on the style back in the 1920's which are still in print to this day. Wong Fei Hung 's version of the system is refered to as Canton Hung Ga due to the fact that, you have what we refer to as Village Hung Ga styles that trace their roots back to Hung Hei Gung and are considered Hung Ga as well, although they are not as well known. One of these is the Four Lower Tigers Hung Fist ( Ha Say Fu Hung Kuen). The most notable practitioner of this particular branch was the Kwong Wing Lam who passed away in 2018 here in America.

@frankfranco7251 Much Appreciated ‼️ I actually Cross Trained at Yee's Hung Ga at his school in Chinatown Manhattan at 145 Grand St. Yee Sifu's teacher was Yeun Ling who was himself a student of Tang Fong. I'm friends with almost all of the old crew like Pedro Cepero Yee, Tony Franco, Matt Blazon. I was in NYC once every other month for two years from 1992 til 1994.

The reason why so many Wong Fei-hung movies were made in Hong Kong is that the founder of Hong Kong's martial arts schools, Lam Sai-wing, was a disciple of Wong Fei-hung. He is also the character "Butcher Wing" in the movies. Lam Sai-wing shared stories of Wong Fei-hung with all his disciples, and these stories became legendary in Hong Kong's martial arts circles. Later, when the Hong Kong film industry rose to prominence, most of the stunt performers and martial artists came from this martial arts community, making Wong Fei-hung's tales one of the most popular themes in Hong Kong kung fu movies.

Wong, Fei-hung was a relative of my martial arts sifu. He had a photo of him in the kwon. He was from Canton and Hung Gar was his family style. But he was taught by several other masters as well as the head monk of the Canton Province. My sifu said that Wong; Fei-hung was the "Robin Hood of China." He would help people with herbs and healing --- even if they couldn't pay.

The Chinese government makes a lot of cash perpetuating the myth of a South Shaolin. Archeologists and historians before the kung fu tourism gold rush say there is no historical writing or signs it ever existed. It shows up for the first time in popular street novels in the 1920’s. Now, the communists have a lot of fake archeology showing it exists. After the popularity of the street novels, All sorts of “masters” cashed in claiming lineage as well as silly origin stories like watching animals instead of pressure testing against uncooperative opponents. In the 70’s and 80’s we believed all that hooey.

I'd like to ask, I know in our modern times, there are many highly skilled martial artists in the world, but are there any bonafide legends left in our time? And has the information age removed the mystique behind what martial artists would consider legendary? We have some movie stars like Jackie Chan and Chuck Norris, but beyond those, I am not sure...

As a kung fu film nerd though, I would like to point out that the clip you used of Jet Li doing drunken boxing is from "Last Hero in China", not "Once upon a time in China". It's from a sort of "spiritual spin off" type movie focusing more on comedy! Super fun watch *theres giant centipede costumes and chicken kung fu*, its great.

@@wilfordpadio1896 Good observation and you are right. Drunk Master 2, which is actually Drunken Master 3 but because part 2 wasn't good so they dropped it from the series and made this part 2, is not directly a sequel to part 1. You can say its like a reboot of part 1. He was Wong Fei Hung in both movies, however, he went by Fei Hung in part 1 or as Freddy, in the English dub. He actually had his father, Wong Keng Yeng, in both movies. Wong Fei Hung is motherless, his mother died when he was young.
