Romans didn't even think Greeks had the right to call Romans as Barbarians, However Greeks so freaking love to call Romans that...That is why Romans refused to forgive Greeks by give them the citizenship of Rome after conquered Greece. As for Barbarians, Romans think they are humans but much lower than Roman-Greeks.

“Emishi” sounds like a natural phonological transformation of “Ebisu” according to Japanese pronunciation patterns. (Compare _saburau_ [“to serve”] vs. _samurai_ vs. _de sourou_ [archaic humble copula].) Your guess is as good as mine why they started using those kanji for the word though.

Hey man, I just discovered your videos recently and really really love them. I started reading George Sampson's history of Japan a while ago and I started to use your videos to supplement my reading. I thought it was quite cool when I discovered you use the same book as a source for some of your videos. I was just wondering if you were going to make a video, or have made a video, on the Taiho code? I am having a little bit of trouble understanding it and how and why it failed. I think I understand it more less, and I think I understand its long-term ramifications. But I'm still worried that I may have missed something.
@Linfamy
@Linfamy 5 жыл бұрын
Hey good luck going through Sansom's books! They're great, though many today would consider them dated. There are more up-to-date survey type books around if you're interested. But Sansom's books are great anyways. I did make a video about the Taika Reforms, which the Taiho code is a part of. You can probably search for it. The Taika Reforms established a Chinese style government with departments of Worship and State, provinces, and laws. The reforms were ambitious but they ultimately fell short of creating a Chinese style state. The Chinese had a (theoretically) merit based government. The Japanese tried to do the same, but could not overcome the strong bonds between clan members. Loyalty to the clan usually won over loyalty to the state, so it remained a government based on family connections instead of merit. That's how I understand it.
@matthewarmstrong1609
@matthewarmstrong1609 5 жыл бұрын
@@Linfamy thank you very much. I am very interested in more up-to-date works. How are the Samson books dated and should I be reading them? I don't really want to read something that is factually inaccurate. I did notice a few problems with a few of the details. Like he does talk about the Jomon and Yayoi cultures but he doesn't name them that or differentiate them from the Yamoto and Ainu. So I was under the presumption that they were the same names for the same people. So your videos for me on those cultures were very helpful! Anyway thank you for the reply, and if you ever need book suggestions for the ancient near East or ancient Egypt, I have a few great ones. I love ancient history and the ancient history of the Ancient Near East and Mediterranean in particular, but lately I've been trying to branch out more. Thanks again and keep going with the videos they are great!

Continuing to love your content and topic choices -- thank you, Linfamy! A small mistake in the video: 毛人 was the Chinese word (maoren) for these people (which does indeed literally translate to "hairy people"). The word "Ebisu" in Japanese uses the following kanji: 蝦夷 (literally, "shrimp barbarians," with the left kanji being a more archaic one for prawn; modern Japanese tends to use 海老 (ebi) for shrimp instead). I can't recall if this came up in the video, but these people are also commonly referred to as the "Emishi" or the "Ezo" peoples (both words use the same kanji as for "Ebisu") by Japanese.

As for why they were named in reference to quail and shrimp, I have a theory. In France, Brits are nicknamed "roastbeefs", and in Britain the French are nicknamed "froggies", based on dishes each people supposedly eats a lot (the beef thing is true but not remarkable because almost everyone eats beef; the frog thing is a weird and rare delicacy that no one I know has ever eaten). It's kind of a love-hate relationship. ^^ Maybe it was like that with the Emishi?

Recently the Yayoi-era is denied the existence. A history river must go on, and never stop. Jomon era began more than 10,000 years ago. From every direction people arrived at this Japan islands. In the first place every Japanese people have ainu-DNA and D2,D3. This means a foundation of Japanese consisted Jomon race. For example, we Japanese have shintoism, and there does never exist shinto shrine in other Asian countries. Even Korea, China have no shirine at all completely.Now there exists 83,000shrines in Japan. All of you must know what the existence of Black oceanic current from equator near Indonesia. In 1978, a big wooden sleigh was found in Osaka-Fujiidera. It is wooden triangl of 9m length.Whle in 1990s a same thing was found in Indonesia too. Both names are very similar, Japanese sleigh is called Shura, Indonesian sleigh is called Shura-wat. It must be what some Indonesian people got on black oceanic current and arrived at Japanese islands. This is not only a tiny incident during 10000s years long but also indicates what another direction influenced for this islands like from northern directions. Almost foreigners think about what Korea influenced Japan completely. This is not true. In 663 Japan sent 10,000 soldiers to south part of the peninsula as reinforcement for Bekchu,Japanese name KUDARA. At the time Bekchu was intruded by Korean force and chinese Tang. Bekchu was influenced by Japan for what almost Bekchu people were Japanese, they speak Japanese.Tang was strong , Korea was subordinate of Tang. Tang defeated Japan and almost Bekchu people came to Japan as a refugee. They went home of Japan rather than refugee.

It'd be helpful to show Sakhalin Island in the maps on this video as then you can see the other end of the Japanese archipelago, the point where the islands got closest to the Asian mainland where the Jomon and Ainu people might have migrated from the mainland. IIRC Sakhalin people are very much Ainu as well. Also Taira no Kiyomori is Imperialist clan

Linfamy we all know I waited for this one! ;) The Emishi determined to be relatives of the *Ainu* - But I suspect they could be an another Tunguistic group that settled on the islands too, afterall Japan had many non-yamato variants, especially on Kyushu
