He is a very good boy...I think I can go as far as to say, he is the best boy ever. In a wonderful world, someone would make a faithful adaptation of the story of Beren and Luthien and we would get the privilege of seeing Luthien and Huan kicking butt and taking names.

The timing of this for me was unfortunate. I lost my great hound 2 days ago. To me he was like that of Huan. He was a large dog even for his breed, he was my protector against all kinds of foes, and it seemed nothing could kill him. Saturday I placed my hand on his head and we told each other goodbye.

Huan is , was and always will be my favorite character in all of Tolkiens work. To me, the ultimate image of peace and contentment is Tom Bombadil sitting quietly, smoking a pipe by the fireplace with Huan curled up at his feet. I know they never met on the page but still...

What many people forget about Sauron: - He fought on equal terms with Huan using the resources available to him: Claw, Poison, Animal Strength, Demonic Art and the available spells. The problem is that in addition to facing an invulnerable being, Sauron was facing Destiny itself and the fabric of Lúthien's veil that incapacitated him with a temporary sleep. About the nature of Huan. He was a Maia! "At the bottom of the page bearing the brief text V (p. 389) my father jotted down the following, entirely unconnected with the matter of the text: Living things in Aman. As the Valar would robe themselves like the Children, many of the Maiar robed themselves like other lesser living things, as trees, flowers, beasts. (Huan.)" Only the Valar and Maiar are intelligences that can assume forms of Arda at will. Huan and Sorontar could be Maiar - emissaries of Manwe.(4)" Orcs - History of Middle Earth.

Finally, a KZbin video devoted solely to Huan, my favorite character of Tolkien's universe!😃 In any adaptation of Beren and Luthien (my preference is a season of a larger _Silmarillion_ series), I envision Huan as providing the comic relief that the Hobbits provide in _The Hobbit_ and _The Lord of the Rings,_ because he is, well, a dog. He wouldn't be like Jar Jar Binks, of course, because he is integral to the story. Rather, and more appropriately, he would function like Dug in _Up,_ albeit a somewhat more serious equivalent. Unlike Dug or in the Tolkien writings, however, Huan wouldn't speak, because I don't think Tolkien, as a writer, fully understood the power of nonverbal queues. I want viewers to see their dogs in him, to fall in love with him, and to bawl their eyes out when he dies.

When I wrote the first draft of the script, I thought about including a joke that was something like, "He seemed to have a great distaste for people mounting him, but for some reason submitted to Luthien, though legend does not tell us why." :P I'm glad you enjoyed the video, man. When I found "Wild Wales" and Gelbert, as I love to seek out Professor Tolkien's influences to see what inspired him, I thought it was a great connection I had not seen made before. I love Huan! (And the automatically generated subtitles refer to him as Juan :D)

My family had a few Irish Wolfhounds when i was growing up. Amazingly gentle and loyal dogs, and lethally protective if they ever need to be. We never lost any cattle to wild dogs on our property, although all our neighbours did, especially in calving season. They'd lost almost half their calves some years. The wild dog packs never wanted to tangle with our two dogs at the time. One a wolfhound/rhodesian ridgeback cross and the other a pure blooded wolfhound. I miss them both dearly.

This is just one example of many, that we as humans are not worthy of canine companionship. Ever see the dogs attacking the shark video? Says it all. Great video, hope to see it as movie(that doesn’t suck) one day. Stories from the Silmarillion are some of his finest work.

Strangely, by some weird turn of fate The Silmarillion was the first work by JRR Tolkien I was fortunate enough to read. When I was 12 years old, four years before the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings came out in theatres. I loved reading religious literature, such as the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita, the Dhammapada, the Teachings of Juangxui, the Tao te ching, etc, so I really fell in love with the religious-seeming Silmarillion before finding the Hobbit at a school fair the next year, noticing the same author was responsible for both works. That of course led me to Lord of the Rings and within a year, we got the first of the trilogy. A lot of the scripts I write for this channel try to look at the more universal, mythic elements Tolkien imbues each of his stories with in that pursuit of 'making a mythology for the English'. The History of Middle-earth series has been a revelation for anyone interested in how the stories, both The Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings evolved. There is also a certain allegory in the The Quest of the Silmaril to The Divine Comedy: The Inferno by Dante Alighieri, as Dante's path to Heaven is blocked by a wolf. This Wolf will be challenged by a Grayhound, who will drag it back to hell. However, in illustration, he resembles an ordinary dog/wolf mix.

Considering how prophecies seem to work in Tolkien’s work, they seem to be more coincidental or circumstancal, it leads me to believe that Huan’s speaking three times before he dies is more due to him more likely being a “person” who rarely talks unless it is absolutely necessary Take the “no man can kill him” prophecy about the Witch-King, Glorfindel made the prophecy, specifically stating that “not by the hand of man will he fall.” Leading people to believe that the Witch-King could not be killed by a man, rather than how he would die.

Huan is definitely my favorite beast then maybe shadowfax and Bill the pony as far as good beings go. I'd say smaug, the Oliphants and the wolves are my favorite bad beasts. Theory: These images, which belong to the vision of harmony and disharmony in the Music of the Ainur, are beings whose spiritual structures (a type of fëa) were formed after Eru gave existence to Arda with the Secret Fire. Huan as an example of harmony and Carcharoth as an example of disharmony are just two of these spiritual beings. They realized their existence in incarnated form with their bodies (hröa) constructed from the material of Arda by the Valar. According to this theory, since they were formed by the Music of the Ainur, their fate is woven into the music.

Leads one to wonder, was Huan's a soul that faded in death, journeyed to the Halls of Mandos, or perhaps could later take on form, again? I don't pretend to totally understand the endings for Beren and Luthien; they did die, but lived again and then died, again. Was she mortal that time? Did they board a ship together, and sail out from beyond the boundaries of Arda, as all Men do? Did Luthien end up in the Halls of Mandos? It might have been comforting to know that Huan found her again, in the Halls beyond life, especially if she were there, but Beren was not. Or maybe, if Illuvatar dies have mercy, the three of them took up that boat together, and sailed off beyond the borders of story, to tales none will ever know.

In the Athrabeth, we learn that elves do not believe souls can be un-made. So, looking at it like that, it is likely that Huan was a Maia, and if an Elvish soul cannot be un-made, it is likely that Huan's spirit indeed returned to the Halls of Mandos! After their second death, the humans Beren and Luthien received the Gift of Men, that is, to die a natural death and not be bound forever to the circles of the world. By the way, I think it's ironic that Sauron's guise of Annatar is known as the 'Lord of Gifts', as death is known as the Gift of Men; and if anyone brought more death than Sauron, I know them not.
