Costs related to climate change are expected to reach $38 trillion annually by 2050, but who will pay for the adaptation and mitigation projects needed to combat the extreme weather? NBC News' Stephanie Ruhle moderates a panel with former U.S. climate envoy and Secretary of State John Kerry, Anne Finucane of the TPG Rise Climate Fund and Chair of Rubicon Carbon, and Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran, a energy and climate editor at The Economist. NBCUniversal News Group is the media partner of Aspen Ideas Festival.

Most US cities are a definition of an urban sprawl. I love biking, but where I live it's just not feasible to bike for anything else than recreation. My daughter's school is 5 miles away, my work is 20 miles away, my doctor is 22 miles away and so on. And everybody wants to live in a house. US cities need a complete overhaul and high-density housing. But nobody really wants it, including the people.

I have deep concern we are not coming at this problem from all the right angles. Water is very important to this issue. It is true that with more heat means more evaporation causing more problems to solve in many ways. Big data centers and mines are going to installed with power in mind but they take massive water resources. Its so humid today it might reach 108 heat index. I purchased a dehumidifier for my living space and it pulls at least a cup of water out every day and it is a simple cheap model. If we use desalination, humidifiers and dehumidifiers to change this situation it could use less energy, create water and take the severity out of this problem. Of course the research and scale would have to be developed but a cooler ocean, weaker weather patterns and more resources might be achieved. Forest fires happen when its dry or less humid for to long and I've seen research saying the tree's are coughing and gasping to breath its just crazy to ignore the simplest of technology and create improved outcomes.

By volume, the dry air in Earth's atmosphere is about 78.08 percent nitrogen, 20.95 percent oxygen, and 0.93 percent argon, adding up to 99.96 percent. A brew of trace gases accounts for the other approximately 0.04 percent, including the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. To think that a small increase (200 parts per million in the last hundred years) of carbon dioxide would affect the weather is absurd.

All we can do now is determine if that crash is going to be civilization ending or just super painful. The rich will feel this crash the hardest, even if many of the worlds poor will (and already are in India etc) notice and suffer the most from climate change soonest, it is that economic crash that is set to wipe out most currently held wealth.

15:32 _"And what is the ultimate price tag to transition to greener renewable energy. Who pays for these projects and ultimately if we don't do it who pays that price?"_ If we transition it doesn't cost much extra money we just have invest as usual but in different projects and products that don't burn fossil fuels. If we get distracted by Big Oil and delay the transition or don't finally transition at all it will cause tremendous additional costs to deal with desasters and pay an irresponsible deathtoll. 49:33 _"...and the US is currently 20%...she means nuclear is 20% of the energy demand of the US..."_ Here I have to intervene... Yes nuclear may have a 20% share on the US electricity demand and how John Kerry said earlier 75% of the US electricity demand may be "green energy", but *electricity* demand does not mean energy demand. The biggest energy demand 2/3rd or even more of whole energy demand comes from traffic and heating of housing. This all has to be electrified. Cars and airplanes are very popular and widespread in the US. That means emobility and heat pumps have to completely substitute ICE engines and gas and/or oil heaters.

No discussion of developed nations, chief among them the US, European nations, China, who are by far the largest historical emitters, paying for the damage these emissions have already caused and continue to cause. There was the usual talk about the US as a leader, etc., but a leader pays for the damage it has caused, i.e., acts morally. If the US and other responsible countries fail to pay for the damage, they have no moral standing to ask others to sacrifice to "fight" (whatever that means) "climate change."

Are you saying that pandemic is good for the Earth through sequestration of human activities like humans did not exist. No more tourism, no more long distance travel, no more daily commutes, that will probably put a dent on slowing Global Warming Crisis. Whatever the change, it has to be transformative and lasting!

I'll tell you what the problem is....we squandered away the chance to transition to a cleaner energy source for home and travel and saving oil reserves for future generations for those products we can't live without decades ago when it would have made a difference. These endless panels saying the same thing over again is useless. We only needed to become carbon neutral, put in what the planet can take out.....no chance we'll ever do that now.

@@JimmyD806 " the current short-duration warm period won't peak until at least 2075." The "warm period" is totally determined by our emissions and related feedback loops we are setting in motion. There are no natural cycles that are causing any lasting warming at this point in Earth's history, and if not for our emissions, global temps would have been quite stable for another 50,000 years.

@@JimmyD806 Thanks for your reply, but as your argument makes zero sense scientifically. It's akin to saying "My wife usually gets headaches from stress or her period, so the headache she has now can't possibly be from the car crash she was in today." Many things can and have caused global warming and cooling in the past, but a) NONE of those natural drivers of climate change are doing anything that accounts for the observed warming, b) thousands of studies prove that the warming was caused by our emissions and their inevitable effects, and c) we have 40+ years of quite accurate climate models based on their conclusions about how much additional warming is caused by each XX additional units of CO2. Ergo, the climate scientists have this figured out, and had it figured out long ago, which is why every nation on Earth--including those that make most of their money from oil--have signed off on a report stating that our emissions caused ~98% of all global warming since 1900. Take care.

If we weren't still rising... you might have a point... but since continuing is more than capable of pushing us from a damaging and dangerous position to a point of cataclysmic destruction... you don't. The consequences, as you mildly put it, won't just be something we can throw money toward and fix like it's a broken down car. The kind of devastation inaction will bring wouldn't even allow our current economies to continue in any meaningful manner.
