As a European working in AI I’m disappointed about how so much European talent and technology is lost to overseas. Example: the godfathers of deep learning are Yann Lecun, Yoshua Bengio and Geoff Hinton, all US/Canada citizens. However they’re all European (two french one brit). There is not a single big company of the size of google, microsoft, apple, amazon. For the promising AI startups (including the one I work for) the CEO usually looks for being bought by an overseas giant, again losing the technology (to US in most cases). Something is going wrong in Europe and all the EU seems capable of is preventing any company from actually getting big

The biggest benefit of a true general AI - it doesn't care about countries, borders and humanity in general 😅
@joeblack4436 Жыл бұрын
There's centuries of war possible in that alone. And possibly humanity destroying itself. So I fail to see the benefit. There's always good and bad uses with any tech. You can actually train an AI to care about countries, borders and humanity. The problem is that those to whom borders are an inconvenience, are obviously predisposed by default to spreading the bad across borders. As long as they themselves benefit. Some don't care about the cost to others. Some enjoy the cost to others.

Few people are responsible enough to point out the journalist was trying to manipulate ChatGpT, which resulted in the AI producing bizarre answers. The future looks bright for everyone with an honest intellectual curiosity. AI will hopefully hasten the demise of manipulative people in society, as they twist their understanding of truth up through their own devious nature.
@jan7356 Жыл бұрын
I am glad someone sees the hypocrisy in the article. Biased AI or biased journalists. Probably more of the latter. While the AI is trained on (biased) data on the internet, it actually understands the data and can therefore attempt to "de-bias" it, contrary to journalists who come with their personal biases and selective filters and an insatiable thirst for sensational content, no matter if it reflects reality accurately or not. Journalists contribute to the problem of "bias" on the internet. The world they describe has very little to do with the real world as researchers like Hans Rosling or Steven Pinker demonstrated.

At the moment only things for companies profit or government processes that citizens do not benefit from appear to be. Good that the military stuff isn't there yet. Still many cases of AI controlled machines with access to deadly weapons not being able to tell friend from foe. Historically we have seen that it's Silicon Valley and many other regions like the European and Japanese companies which create and pioneer the fundamentals of new technologies. When it comes to China, we have seen that they sometimes have been very quick and easy to adopt and apply these new technologies which leads to them being refined. Mostly this is due to the lack of strong preexisting institutions that can resist the introduction of these technologies. A prime example would be mobile payments. Americans already had a large ATM network, there was no need for mobile payment systems. Another example would be high speed internet. There was already DSL and Cable networks. Those consolidated into uncompetitive monopolies that hindered the rollout of fibre for a long time.
