His defensive WAR compared to all other defenseman in the league places him in the bottom 2 percent of the league. Meaning that 98% of the rest of the leagues defenseman have a greater impact defensively on a teams win in a game. Meaning he hurts their chances of winning when he’s defending in his own zone. He starts 13.5% of his shifts in the offensive zone, compared to only 8.5% in the defensive zone for a reason. Neutral zone starts are 18%, and starts on the fly are 59%. He’s being sheltered from having to play in his own zone as much as possible to maximize his offensive utility. But that doesn’t mean he’s good defensively.

@ well, I’d agree, Montreal has shown every team how to deploy him in his current state. If he develops his defensive game more, he’ll likely have an even greater offensive output as he’ll be able to be put out there in every situation, not just the ones that cater to his strengths as they stand right now. There’s nothing wrong with him not being good defensively right now, but a biased view of him every night seeing him be so dynamic offensively is going to partly make people blind to his faults. There’s nothing wrong with being biased either, it just happens. I’m biased af about Louis Crevier and Alex Vlasic in Chicago. I think Vlasic is a top 20, 15, maybe even 10 defensive defenseman in the league. And he’s actively developing, and excelling at developing his two way game adding more offense. Currently, Louis Crevier is showing the same kind of growth that Vlasic showed he had last year from the year before. I’m probably over evaluating and valuing these guys, but that’s cause I’m bias.

I'm shocked at how much worse Vladar's stats are compared to wolf. Whether that means Vladar is a below average backup or Wolf is truly that much better than an average NHL goaltender is yet to be seen. Just happy to see Flames games actually mean something in mid-January. I hope Wolf can pull off the rare Saros career of shorter successful goaltenders. Many complain hearing commentators always mention goalie's height...that's because it's very rare for 6'0'' and shorter to ever become mainstays in the NHL. If it was more common it wouldn't be noteworthy.

Incredibly high offensive zone starts, goal is to have them out when the best opposing offensive players aren’t out there. Every team has a guy/ pairing to shut people down. On the Habs it’s Guhle/Carrier, the Avs it’s Manson/Girard, the Canucks it’s Soucy/Myers and on the Rangers it was Miller/Trouba. You can look at all of their quality of comp and how they’re deployed. Those are the facts. Hutson will be an elite offensive defenseman who is good defensively in his role, just like those guys.

If he didn't miss any time he would be on pace for like a a 76pt season which are the most points Toews ever put up in a single year of his career. Hell wouldn't be shocked if he reaches 76pts despite missing the 11 games as long as they keep him paired with Toffoli and Eklund two guys who can actually score off of his passes and give him a lot more space as teams can't just focus on trying to take him away. As Toffoli is was too gifted as a shooter to give space to as any time he gets his wrist shot off it's lethal looking. And Eklund is really coming into his own and showing just how gifted of a young talent he is. Before this he was usually on a line with fellow rookie Smith who has looked lost for chunks of the year and then either a Grinder like Goodrow or Kunin. So it's amazing he was even producing the way he was as all of them have struggled to do anything with the chances Celebrini has set up for them.

Oh it's Hutson indeed, he literally took off Matheson as the quarterback (Montreal sends in only one dman during PP's and Matheson is now on PP2) and his presence is massively felt, the guy can pass the puck more so than all the young Habs dmen that showed up since 2021-22, maybe Mailloux can do the same, but they judged that for now he was more useful to Laval than in Montreal, those 7 games he played at the beginning of the season, he was great in, offensively he was on a better pace than in Laval where he is surely not as well surrounded by as much talent. The way he controls the puck and makes a mockery of the wingers trying to take it from him during powerplays is refreshing, havent seen this since Markov/Subban when it comes to deking and stickhandling near the blueline without causing offsides...and his feeds to the goal scorers are excellent, he only needs to work on his own shot imo, he has what could become a deadly precise wrist shot that is strong enough to be sent from the blue line and finally, he partly explains why MTL are not in the dumpsterfires at position 25-32 in the NHL anymore, Celebrini no matter how good he is cannot elevate San Jose to playoff territory just yet, even if he's better surrounded than Bedard in Chicago, Bedard has to become a bit more selfish and shoot at the net more, his sudden deadly wrist shot hasn' been seen as much, but we're in the middle of the season, can't say it's a sophomore slump really as of yet. San Jose's defense and goaltending are very weak which doesn't help, Montreal mostly decided to build from the bottom up, making sure their blue line offers many choices when it comes to prospects so that we aren't afraid to trade some who end up not being as important/not developing as fast as the others and so far from the 2 prospects they decided to move on from, the Harris trade was excellent in retrospect, even if his goal was the one putting them on top and giving Colombus their win. The Kovacevic trade was a lot weaker, some AHLer and a 3rd or 4th line pick...eh, Kovasevic proved he can be a 2 way dman if given the chance last year, although not a great passer, just like Barron, he has one hell of a shot. I'm sure Lane will have such a shot in a year or two, so he's my choice although my vote doesn't count either 😆

This isn't the MVP award helping your team win games really doesn't help your case that much in a Calder race. If it did then it either would have been a much closer race last season or they would have given it to Faber seeing how he helped his team get to the playoffs as opposed to Bedard who's team finished dead last in their division and had the 2nd worst record in the NHL. Also if just going on wins was what was important than Wolf would then be the favorite is nothing helps a team win more than good goaltending. As even the most gifted rosters will struggle if they have bad goaltending. Just look at the Aves pre and post Blackwood trade. Also have to look at it this Celebrini could be putting up more than a PPG and the Sharks would still be a bottom 4 team in the league. Would be the same case if Hudson was on the Sharks as opposed to Montreal. Team would still be where it is in the standings with Hudson and Hudson production wouldn't be as high due to playing next to less talent than he currently is. Seen Celebrini so many times this season make great plays for high danger scoring chances only for the person recieving the pass to whiff on the shot.

@@ghostsintheforum Because he's played in 9 more games then Celebrini. So PPG would be the better metric to judge them both by which Celebrini has the edge in. Or the fact that a big % of Hudson's points have either come on the PP or from secondary assists. Much larger percentage than Celebrini. Which is why I give Celebrini the edge right now. Would give Hudson the edge if Celebrini was nothing but a offensive player but he's not been playing great at both ends of the ice. Not saying Hudson isn't either. Just that to me the ppg and type of points is what makes me give it to Celebrini right now. But this entire argument is pointless right now as they reward isn't handed out midway into the season. For all any of us know both could hit the rookie wall go ice cold rest of the year and then either Michkov or Wolf get the award. Or either Hudson and Celebrini get red hot the rest of the way and completely pull away from the other and everyone else.

@@wisewolftony All that says to me is that Hutson is more durable which strengthens my case. Besides, you can’t use “coulda woulda shoulda” when considering an award. Besides, it’s not at all uncommon for high draft rookie forwards to have a good offensive season. However, it’s extremely rare for a rookie dman to lead the league in rookie scoring and to cause his team to win. Yes, both players could very well get knocked down the chart by season’s end but in a hypothetical world where the season ended today, I’d definitely give the Calder to Hutson.

Hutson is a solid defender, who uses his size to pick pucks out of pockets. And we all know he can set up goals in ways that shock true hockey fans.
@JediMasterZao12 күн бұрын
Has to be Hutson. What he's doing is historic. As good as Mack has been, he's not doing anything that a lot of former first overall forwards haven't done before.

Hutson is all offence? Have you watched him play? His flashy offensive plays shadows his steadier and continually improving defensive play
@lvern6012 күн бұрын
As of today, I think it's Hutson. He seems to be getting better every single game too. Lots of doubters about his defensive game, and valid based on some early games in the season, but dude has adjusted so quickly to challenge that narrative. The rate of his development defensively is equally as impressive as how he controls the game offensively.

I don't think Michkov is worthy of it at this point, but am happy to see his stats and presence / placement on the ice. He has a number of parts of his game that need to be improved. But he is so much more creative than 95% of the roster, nobody can play with him. When he gets help, he could be a monster. I am happy to see Torts has said that he is not going to stifle Michkov's creativity as long as he isn't creating other problems. I'd be great if Wolf were to get it. He's so much fun to watch. He was so great in the AHL and made the team I go watch look stupid repeatedly. Celebrini looks so natural out there. I think the trophy is his to lose.

I'm a Canadiens fan and I'll admit I'm biased towards Hutson because he you can see how much the guy loves playing hockey when he's on the ice. He plays with passion out there with the skill to match and it's truly infectious to see him come alive and breaking ankles when the puck is on his stick. That said, I have to send some love to Celebrini also. There's a highlight of him against Vegas backchecking, stealing a puck then diving at the blue line to just to make a pass to his linemate. For all the bravado that being a first overall pick can give an 18-year-old guy, he seems like a down to earth team-first player whose heart matches his very high skill level. Just really cool to see. I also like Will Smith a lot so I can't wait for the sharks to be good again. Or at least, not suck as much as they do right now.

To "catch up" to Celebrini Michkov would have to go backwards. Celebrini plays with the best players on the sharks. Michkov plays with clowns who can't hit an open net. I still don't believe he will win the Calder for 2 reason, he's Russian and a Flyer.

Wolf because the reason the Flames are even in the playoff race is because of Wolf's heroic goaltending winning them these games. Hutson is just a very impressive defenseman the way he skates and transition the game reminds me a lot of a young Quinn Hughes.

As a Flames fan I might be biased, but I feel like Wolf is being underrated at 4th. If he played more games and his numbers were slightly better, I feel like he could easily be in the conversation for the Vezina, let alone the Calder. If Hutson was almost in the conversation for the Norris or Celebrini for the Art Ross for example, I'm sure they'd be clear favorites for the Calder. People really underrate goalies imo. Unless celebrini really skyrockets above a ppg, I think talking about Wolf and Hutson are much better candidates for the calder as both literally are having a massive hand in putting their respective team in the playoffs. I think it would be cool to have a Goalie win it, but I think it would require that Wolf plays 40ish games and continues to show stability making Calgary a playoff team simply due to goaltending and hard work. Hutson may need a good amount of points too. As it stands, if calgary makes the playoffs hard not to give it to the goaltender that made the team projected to be bottom 4 to be in a wild card at the least.
@stephanegendroncartier597315 күн бұрын
Hutson is by far the winner of this year's Calder, if he continues to play the way he is now, for several reasons. The defender's position is harder to master than that of a forward. Not only is Hutson the top scorer among rookies, he's also one of the NHL's top 10 defensemen; are the other rookies among them? There's also the impact Hutson has had on his team's success.
@hermankermit-warm112114 күн бұрын
I'd argue the Goaltender position is hardest, every mistake costs a goal and especially for Wolf playing in a Calgary team that isn't exactly full of goals. He's been unreal. Tenders don't get the respect they deserve. And if we're talking effect on a team with Wolf the Flames would hit 110 plus points with his stats. I'm giving it Wolf if Calgary make play offs, but Huston is def my 2nd pick, and who knows if Habs can make playoffs and he continues to shine I would have no problem changing my vote to him. The Habs are gonna be fkin Unreal in 1/2 years. Exciting times for Montreal for sure! I'm a Bolts fan, so I have no skin in this game 🤣💀

It should be Hutson's, but seeing as the more famous player tends to get the votes - Celebrini (who is also fantastic) will probably win it in my opinion.
