There's some evidence to suggest that the riff they're talking about was actually written by Kirk as well. James doesn't remember or is outright not saying it's Kirk because it's often attributed to him and probably doesn't want to shatter that illusion. That's why he never really talks about which riffs are his. He's never like "When I wrote blackeneds solo riff, I was doing so and so". He's never really talked about things like that. But back to the main point. There's a exodus demo tape from when Kirk was in the band, which has a very, very similar style riff. So far that seems to be the closest thing we have to figuring out who wrote the 2nd riff (the spider riff). It seems like James wrote the first riff (descending riff) Kirk wrote the second, then everything aside from the chorus riff (Kirk) and the bowie riff (from Cliff) are jame's riff.
@jye_24Ай бұрын
Exactly ahaha, I Love seeing Mustaine Stans cope because they can't handle how Next Level James Song Writing Is.
@LETSpeakTRUTHАй бұрын
@@jye_24 Not just that, but that Kirk himself has contributed a lot of great riffs. Not as much as James quantity wise, but quality wise they're among the greats. I personally think there's a case to be made that Dyers eve fast riff is written by Kirk or the initial idea was Kirk, edited by James and lars. It's his writing/playing style and is super similar to the fast riff in disposable heroes which is confirmed his, and his fast riff from trapped under ice. That type of riffing isn't something James typically did, and if it was his, it's obviously a kirk influence from writing and playing with him. I like Dave Mustaine as a musician but the people here saying that he wrote it are insane. The man would have said he wrote it years ago, which he has never done. Also, people act like just because metallica took some of his riffs, that makes him some credible source that never lies. The dude isn't truthful 100% of the time, and often lies or twists truths. Even Ron Mcgovney, the original Bassist often tweets out corrections whenever anyone from that time period get's something wrong. In the case of Dave, he's caught him lying multiple times. Even reading some of his early interviews in 85, will show you some very wild assertions that he's kinda stopped saying over the years. I just wouldn't trust his word, without proof. Most people shouldn't either.

Guys- I know it’s probably BS they don’t remember, and it’s true Dave wrote and got credit for songs on KEA and RTL, but Master is 3 albums in by then and every song on it is awesome- surely Dave doesn’t get that much credit. He was out of the band before they even recorded the first album. Megadeth has done amazing work too, but nothing stands out as iconic as Metallica tunes. Even Kirk provided Sandman and before that Jason gave us Blackened. I would sooner believe Cliff came up with it. But generally the only “collective” would be James and Lars. 😂🎸
@benjaminlynch99583 ай бұрын
This is the correct answer. A lot of people have hard ons for Dave in this thread, but it’s no coincidence that their best material came after he was fired and Cliff started educating the entire band on music theory. To me, Dave’s riffs from that era were fast and technical, but boring musically beyond just the pace. The stuff they wrote after he left the band - with a huge assist from Cliff - was much more complex with layers of riffs, changing keys, changing tempos, etc. by the time they recorded this and were performing it in concerts, Dave had been out of the band for over TWO YEARS already. The only way Dave had anything to do with this song as his fanboys would have us believe, is if he was still trying to help out his buddies Lars and James two years after they supposedly stabbed him in the back. Does that sound like something Dave would do? No chance. And certainly not in 1985 when his own band was taking off.

I'm more inclined to think it was Dave's due to their hesitation. If it was Cliff's I am certain that they would be very quick to attribute it to him. Or they honestly just do not remember. If it really was Dave's and they say it is then maybe they'd be legally required to give him a writing credit. Honestly, if it was Dave's and they did give him credit and fair compensation it would only go to show how much they have grown and healed. About like former spouses finally being able to not only be in the same room with each other but also being able to honestly speak to each other's good traits. We all know how uncommon that is and I'm not sure that because they are all multimillionaires that they are to be held to higher standards. They are human after all.

@@HeSavedMeIt wasn't, everyone knows Cliff wrote the riff after the solo - the one that was inspired by Andy Warhol. There is an old interview from 1986 in which Kirk says James used to play the master of puppets riff on the D string since 1984 as a joke excersise and that Lars eventually told him to play it on the E string. Apart from that Cliff wrote the bass swells intro on Damage Inc and the waltz riff on Orion. Cliff actually took some of Kirks solo on Orion, he deleted half of Kirks solo and played it on bass!

The three second musical phrase that comprised the main riff of master of puppets was one of the dozens of little riffs Dave would noodle around with and the others would always playfully want to learn how to play it then he’d see them playing the riffs on different days to others and saying it’s their riff. Anyone who’s been in a band understands that’s basically everything about having more than one guitarist. And just like James said, that kind of thing “doesn’t matter”… while all three of them were pretending to not remember, not even knowing if each other remembers. My source: the same emotion based logic mixed with educated guessing that everyone else is using for their reasoning of why “it just sounds like a James riff”

@@meteorman6167 No Mustaine has never filed a lawsuit against Metallica, why do people make this stuff up. Dave was credit for his 4 cowrites on Kill em all since the day it released and even used to boast about it in early Megadeth interviews. Dave helped write 6 songs in total some of which he contributed no more than one riff. That's not " a lot" and he wrote nothing on master of puppets and he himself says he remembers Lars writing that riff so there you go.

@@meteorman6167 If Dave is still crying about not getting credit for writing Leper Messiah, do you really think he wouldn’t say something about writing Master of Puppets by now, especially with all the Stranger Things and Fortnite stuff lately? and this is the difference between a fan of music and the artists who make the music. its all about the mindset, in virtually every walk of life. thing is, you cant force that mindset... you can tryyy. you can pretend you dont remember you coming up with that sick riff. but, deep down, you know who it was, and you want the credit. for true artists, like these guys are, that comes completely natural...and, in my opinion, a little thing like that is what makes truuuuuue greatness

According to Dave Mustaine, Lars Ulrich composed the song's opening riff while Mustaine was still a member of Metallica. A riff from David Bowie's song "Andy Warhol" (at 0:48) is quoted in "Master of Puppets" (at 6:19). It is an homage made by Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett to whom Bowie was a huge influence.

I don’t find it unbelievable that they came up with it during a jam session. Any decent guitarist who has collaborated with others has had those moments of “Oh shit, that little lick there sounded pretty good, how about we add this? Nice, but how about we play it like this? Why don’t we play it at this speed?”. Do that enough times between talented musicians and you’ve got yourself a song that nobody is sure who wrote it.
