In November we purchased a pallet (36) of 405 watt BiFacial solar panels by SEG. It was the last one that Signature Solar sold. They are the same dimension as the new Sirius Solar Panels and similar in every way. Today August 16th 2024 the 12 that are hooked up to PV1 on our EG4 18Kpv was producing 5,552 watts. That was 463 watts from a 405 watt panel in summer time. They are on the Brightmount rack system.

Please mount two or so panels standing straight up and down on the long edge with no lean. Capacity test. Early morning on main side, late evening sun on the bifacial side. Compare the results to panels to those that were as you have in the video on a ground mount lean. Look at the total output over the day instead of just as particular times. Add into your consideration snow where there would be no build up on the straight up and down panels and the snow would provide bifacial input. You may find it advantageous to have a ground mount stand that lets you change the orientation for when it is snowing.

Background in construction, would suggest ground mount, Roof mount is roof generation's, possible leak, plus the added weight in normal conditions, not counting snow and potentially falling
@Tecknition3 ай бұрын
Most residential areas aren't going to allow ground mounts, and even if they do you may not have enough open, unshaded space to make it viable. Roof mounts are really the only option for most people. More penetrations do mean more chances of leaks, but if done right the risks are as minimal as your normal roof leaking with the multiple penetrations for every shingle applied. And if your roof can't support 1-1.5k pounds over the entire installation surface area (the typical final install weight of a residential array), it might not be structurally sound to begin with lol

Great panels Joe - RIP the one panel that is deceased LOL --- Absolute best would be to mount the new panels up on very top of the roof in full sun and don't worry about being Bifacial as these panels will make about 360 to 400 watts every day you have sun and that is far more than what your others are creating. ------------ What I really want to get on you about is not to go up on your roof to remove snow (very dangerous) and people fall and break, legs, ribs and backs every year doing that and roofs are made to hold the weight of snow up to about 4 feet deep. Roofs (especially in the North) are made to bear 40 lbs per sq ft for the weight of snow, etc. 1inch of average snow (wet snow weighs more) but the average on snow is 1" of snow = 1 lb per sq ft. so 1 foot of snow would average 12 lbs. Solar panels actually shed snow fairly quickly, their glass is so slick that snow usually will melt and slide off with just a few hours of sunlight over a couple of days so you may lose solar for 2-3 days before it melts and or slides off the panels. Your life is worth a lot more than a few days of solar production that you would lose. Sorry if I ranted too much ! LOL

Maybe you need to try and rebuild it w/ new glass... 😁 As far as the roof vs ground, I would go with the ground mount. Yes you'll have less direct light in winter but the you'll get more reflective light on the ground than you will from the roof (plus as you said, a whole lot easier to clear that snow off).

We are near Nashville, and installed 20 panels replacing our privacy fence. Due to our shading we have microinverters, but the panels are installed portrait on our back fence and are bifacial. It world be best if the fence ran N/S but ours runs NW/SE, but it works, just not optimal. Our space is limited too. We have a high tension power lines running behind us so we don't have to worry about building or such behind us and we can cut the scrub brush that grows there. The other side is our back yard. Ours are 370W Jenko bifacials from Signature Solar.
@wesdiezy2 ай бұрын
You could mount them on the ground, but totally vertical with the front and back facing east to west. Many have found that you actually get more overall energy from bifacial panels in that configuration because they stay cooler, and you'd have more access to your yard. Although I'm not sure how your trees and other shade casting objects in your yard would affect that. in that configuration

Hi Joe! I have an idea that I’ve been playing around with for a while now. It’s one to help lower the maintenance needed on the solar panels during the winter. So up here in Wisconsin, you can buy this wire that you plug into 120v and is a low wattage wire, and it’s designed to melt the Ice and snow in your gutters and the first foot or so of your roof. The idea is to help keep your roof from getting an ice buildup at the gutters. Which can damage your roof. So my idea is to take a few of those and run them in one of a few ways, to help melt the snow and ice enough for the sunlight to hit your panels, so that they can start getting warm and melting most of it. So the first way would be to hot glue the wire to the back of the panel, in a up and down grid formation. Much like the heating grid in a floor. If using hot water heat. But if we did this with this wire, it could be enough heat to cause the hole panel to melt the snow and ice. Another way could be to hot glue it to the front of the panel, but this time have it run right over the silver bus lines that connect each panel inside the big panel together. In an up and down motion. This to would melt the snow and ice. And lastly, would be to run this heating wire all around the outside of the metal frame of the panel. So heat can transfur. What do you think? Think it could work? Ps. I still haven’t tryed your suggestion yet, mostly because I’m still thinking about which breaker to put in another’s spot in the transfer switch. But I think that’s an exultant idea. Thank you very much. Have a nice day!

I live in North Idaho, and snow is a serious consideration for 5 months or so, and I don’t want to be climbing my roof in winter all the time to clear the panels. Shattered poly and mono panels still work but you've lost the waterproofing. The cell sheet will get damp over time and then your insulation resistance goes to hell. Thin film panels are dead if shattered. As an aside, with your panel meter/tester consider breaking out and filing flush the remains of the locking tabs on both MC4 connectors on the test leads. It makes life a lot easier when testing many panels. The fit of the plugs holds them in well enough for testing purposes, at least that's what I found with mine.
@lightingnutАй бұрын
Cut the trees down is one option. Then you wouldn't need so many solar panels. How much solar do you have on the house that is active. Seams like a whole lot. With the double sided panels you are going to need more height under them to get some sun back there. Better yet just mount them vertical with something reflective behind them. All will be good.

True. And you know, it's a little funny that we "imperial" folks are completely used to saying and comfortable with "square feet." The snag for us is that "square feet" is usually presented as s.f. rather than f2 (sorry, I don't know or care to learn how to do a superscript). A more conversational presentation (s.f.) than the more scientific (m2). But hey, since I live in America (perhaps I should write 'Murca) and drive a massive pick-up truck (which I don't), I can (and will) happily mess up any metric statements that I can. Many of us do it simply because it seems to annoy the "metric people." I'm in the medical field, so I use metric more than imperial, but it's fun to see the metric people get flustered and annoyed.

34 cents a watt not bad check out ARK-USA solar out of Colorado Solarever USA 550 monofacial .29 cents a watt . They have other panels are down to 24 cents a watt have to buy a pallet at a time. I don't have any connection to them just look for deals under 30 cents a watt guys on DIY solar have already bought some you can pick them up local in Denver save a lot of money. I also buy from Santan solar I'm local to them but their stocking of used has gone way down I suspect they might go out of business because they closed their GA office and of late reduced their stocking.
